Well before you start trying to market something you have to figure out what you want to market!

Most people think Internet Marketing is some kind of business or something...well, it's really just a technique.

It's kind of like saying that you are interested in getting into Radio Marketing. Great! What do you want to sell? Used cars? Medication? Chia pets?

This is really the biggest mistake that newbies make is that they think internet marketing is a business. it's not. It's just a form of getting the word out.

You have to decide if you want to have an ecommerce site (if so what do you want to sell??) or if you want to be an affiliate. If you want to be an affiliate, that's great, but what do you want to sell? What are your expertise?

Many newbies just try hawking the latest IM product out there, but that's silly because they are going up against stiff competition. Maybe try a niche like "how to hypnotize your dog" or something that isn't so competitive.

It's always best to start with what interests you. Ultimately you are looking for people that have a BIG need and then YOU want to be the one that fills that need, but first you have to define what the need is.

If you don't go through this process you will probably try everything from domain flipping, to adsense, to scamming craigslist...and still end up broke.

First YOU need to decide what business you want to be in...no one can really tell you that.

I couldn't agree more... its not a business, its just a form of advertising. (unless your are not intending to be a web property owner and simply seo for others which is great too!)

My advice (after investing over 100k into a site/ system that finally started paying off about 10k/mo after 9 months) is don't even think about the marketing aspect right now. Seriously! Instead think about the cash register (by cash register I don't mean just paypal, checkout cart,etc- I mean the entire conceptual conversion from click to cash, affiliate marketing, dropship, adsense, WSO sales... whatever) you want to use to actually convert traffic/clicks into money. Its absolutely the most important thing you will do.

Once you decide what your "cash register" will be- you will reverse engineer the entire conversion funnel from money being deposited in your bank account, step by step back to the launching of a marketing technique.

Doing it any other way is putting the cart in front of the horse and can cause wasted time effort and money.

Think about it like this... lets pretend for a minute your intention is to set up a decently robust straightforward website and reach first page result (organic) to sell a product.

Wouldn't it seem a little silly and wasteful ($) to run out and buy a domain name before you even know what keywords (product related) you will want to be on the first page for? Maybe once you do a competitive analysis you realize your keywords need to be changed and thus your domain name NOW has nothing in common with the keywords. It would also be silly imho to choose a platform you want to build your site on before you even know how you intend to convert? (why build a blog then realize you want to sell products and need an ecommerce store site etc.)

I'm over-simplifying this of course, but this is the kind of efficiency or lack thereof that truly can make or break a person's motivation. For your system to convert from advertising created interest ->to traffic/clicks-> to your bank account must make sense.

When I started out I ran face first into so many obstacles face first because I simply was too impatient/ enthusiastic to think the steps thru.

Honestly, if you establish your niche/ "conversion cash register" rock solid, the marketing part is a breeze! Its so easy in 2011 to buy dirt cheap seo services, you could spend very little $ and just put in some time doing free techniques you will learn about from the senior members here and elsewhere, and you will get traffic.

It may sound like no one is "answering your question" but this is to save you time, $, and frustration.

I would've loved someone to have taken the time to tell me this when I started out!!!

Answer the question, "what SPECIFICALLY do you want people to pay you for?"

Hope that made sense and helps

There is a lot of good advice on here that you can use. Like one of the earlier post it is easy to get overloaded with information and that makes it harder to really figure out which direction to go in.

Watch out for the " new shinny syndrome". By that I mean don't start buying new products before you get all the basics down. Pick out a few ways to market the products and keep tweaking those till you can make them work.

The hardest thing for me to understand when I was getting started was to understand what my potential customer really wanted, what they had on their mind that needed answering.

Hang in there and remember to take "ACTION" on your ideas.

I believe you need to decide will you sell the product... offline, online, e-mailing lists, landing page, webpage, etc.

after you decide the approach you need to ask for advices for the selected option(s).

I will tell you what I did that was a big no no. I started off looking at too much information. I am sure you can understand what I mean when I say Information Overload. I felt completely overwhelmed. What I learned was, you have to focus on one area, and learn everything in that area first. After you have mastered that, if you want to move on than you can. One big thing you definitely want to do is find a mentor that will help you go through the process. I did this, and it completely changed everything for me.

          Looking for a mentor?

Visit the War Room here, and IM Report Card.

Both can recommend good mentors and help avoid bad ones.
When you find one, visit IM Report Card again and key in his/her name, or the product's name.

In the meantime visit as many blogs as you can. Many of them can provide excellent advice and information without charge. Why pay for the same advice elsewhere?

I am building a list of mentors, good product vendors and membership sites I can trust, but only a couple have been published so far. this is not the forum to advertize names.

It's a tricky one, but I wish you success finding the right guide, and becoming successful.

When you're brand new, you're going to need a ton of help. A lot of it is in WF, so good start.

What TYPE of marketing starts with your budget:

    Zero funds - Adsense and Amazon Associates on a free blogging platform;
    Approx. $50 pm - Affiliate Marketing, combined with Article Marketing;
Bigger budgets - PPC, Banner Ads, and much more

Spend some time selecting your niche, and search Google to get a taste of what's out there.
If Affiliate Marketing, check Clickbank Market for available products in your niche, and take it from there.

I run three blogs specifically for newbies:
    1. IM for people on zero or limited budgets, plus free information for saving costs. There are also free articles about Blogging, Article Marketing, Tips, Hints and more;
    2. Affiliate Marketing for Baby Boomers;
    3. Product and People Reviews and Recommendations
You can get to the first site by clicking on my name at the top.
All my sites have contact boxes, where you can introduce yourself, and ask specific questions.

There is so much new information that you need to avoid buying lots of products. Don't be sucked in by the sales blurbs.

Don't let people tell you it'll be easy. There's a lot to learn, and a lot of work ahead.
It's only easy when you know how.

Don't be put of by the 'w' word. If you're prepared to apply yourself, you can succeed. There IS a lot of money to be made. It just takes time, effort and perseverance.

    Hi,

No matter which niche (affiliate marketing, coupon offerings, product development, etc.) you eventually choose, you should first understand that there are a number of methods or approaches for each niche... and multiple products that people will want you to buy.

Nothing wrong with them offering, because it's up to you to be selective in what you buy. However, it is very easy to buy multiple systems and spend hundreds to thousands of dollars looking for the "complete" system.

The most important thing I want to tell you is... almost every system sold assumes that you already know: 1. How to buy a good domain name. 2. How to get that domain name hosted (which may include knowing how to transfer the DNS numbers from your Registrar to your Hosting company). 3. How to download WordPress to the hosting company cPanel in order to have a "functioning" website.

If you don't know how to do that (or know where to get someone to do it for you) before you buy a system or plug-in from someone, the purchase may gather dust on your hard drive. Many newbies then move on to another "complete" system assuming that it will create a "website and business in a box" for them. And the buying beat goes on!

    Hope that advice is helpful.

    Tech2734,

If you are a Newbie the first thing you must do is invest in yourself. What I mean by that is learn as much as you can. Take each subject one at a time mastering each one as you go along.
It really wont take long until you start to become very knowledgable..you can then start to help others and start to build relationships which in turn will help you build lists.
Unfortunately if this is done properly it will take a little time but you must be patient because you will be greatly rewarded I promise.
I have access to a great training platform which allows me to learn everyday from people that have done it all before. People who re genuinely making big money online. I also get to have my own mentors within this training platform.
I hope you make a success from internet marketing and I will look forward to seeing your post in the future.
Dont forget build your foundations first which will in turn give you a great strong structure for your online business. Its a marathon not a sprint there are NO shortcuts

You have already gotten a lot of advice. What I can tell you is to look at the different avenues and decide what works best for you. In the beginning, you will fumble a lot - it is just part of it all. But, try not to beat yourself up or get discouraged. There are so many ways to go with an online business. Internet marketing is the way to get it out. Look at your strengths and passions. You may not even know what those are yet.

But, don't waste too much time trying every new product - shiny object. At some point you need to figure our your focus - offline marketing, social media marketing, SEO, affiliate, web design, etc. Then, zero in on that. The Warrior Forum is a FANTASTIC place to get advice. Read through the posts, do some research, etc.

Above all, understand that starting a business online will take time. Don't fall for the get rich stuff. There is no magical formula despite what you may hear. Good luck!

      Hey Tech

Well since you have some seo experience maybe you could start sharing what you know about SEO.

You can create a free report. Give it away for free and build your list.

You can start there and branch out later on once you start building your list and maybe even create your own product once you learn a little more about IM.

      Hope that helps

    Hello,

The first thing to do is to decide whether you wish to create and distribute your own products (via eBay or your own website) or would prefer to promote someone elses for a percentage of the profits (affiliate marketing).

Secondly, decide which market you wish to get involved in. A good starting point is to establish where your areas of expertise lie. Are you an expert at dog training or playing a specific instrument, for example? If you're stuck for ideas try visiting the dummies.com website and searching through the various categories there.

In addition, the dummies.com site can be a great shortcut to finding a hot niche market. As an organisation, For Dummies have been established for over twenty years and one can therefore rest assured that any products they create are usually built around a market which has plenty of customers!

From here, you can work on building a mailing list or selling products via Google AdWords or various other means. There is an absolute wealth of information on the Warrior Forum which, if studied, will provide you with a solid foundation on which to build a sustainable internet business.

    Good luck,

    Stephanie

    Where to start...

1 - Make a list of your skills (eg. writing, programming, sales, etc)
2 - Make a list of your topic knowledge (eg. diving, gardening, etc)

The skills list helps you choose the best monetization method by capitalizing on what you can already do yourself.

The topic knowledge list gives you a great starting point for choosing a niche.

Just by following this quick and easy advice you can almost instantly come up with a bunch of great niches and see how you can make money

I recommend you start with free information like a guide or a step by step plan. There are many good strategies that you can find for free to get you started. I like article marketing for new marketers because it introduces you to many other things that will come in handy later. Plus some of us have built article marketing up to a very nice income.

Think about what special knowledge or exprience you have, hobbies etc.
Maybe you can create some type of info product based on this. If not, you could always try affiliate marketing, blogging or learning a little more about internet marketing and trying your hand at helping people with less I.M. knowledge than you have. You may not think you know a lot about I.M., but I bet you could find people out there that would be willing to pay you for your knowledge about I.M. so far.

A lot of good advice here.

I would add by saying that while it is good to learn as much as you can, it also makes sense to just go out and do it. In other words, set up your website, no matter how bad it looks (try a little to get something decent though :-)), and then just learn as you go. Make mistakes. In fact, make many of them, because this is a great way to actually learn. It also prevents you from information overload. You know, where you you find yourself learning and learning, and then before you know it, everything you learnt becomes outdated, so you have to start from the beginning, etc.

Once your website is up and running, it gives you someplace to start. Your next step will be to find ways to drive traffic to your site, so once again, just go out and do it with the little knowledge you have, and then build on it. By the time you have taken in a lot of info, your site will have also evolved with you!

I would start off by reading through the forum. See what other people are doing to make money and find out what area interests you.
If you need money quickly I suggest you start marketing your services by offering writing, making videos, or building sites whatever you are good at.

If you don't need money urgently then perhaps look into partnering with another warrior to get your feet wet and learn from them.

You could also purchase a few WSOs in your chosen area and start to build up a stratagy and business plan.

    Hope this helps

If you already have some knowledge of SEO why not do something with that knowledge? Article writing maybe or video marketing. It does not have to cost you a lot to start using what you already know - action plus concentrated effort will get you some results.

My detour was - I went around in "learning" mode and did not take as much action as I ought. So take the good advice from the people who have replied to your post and see where you want to start - action and only that will take you onto the road of success. There are many many courses that are good, but none will get you anywhere near the results you want unless you apply, implement and do that consistently.

All the best - and we all learn together!
