Can email marketing drive traffic to a site?

We're launching a new social buying site and one of the many ways of driving traffic to it we're considering is using an opt-in email marketing company like optinemaillist.com. So is email marketing a good idea? We have a budget so money isn't an issue, but will there be results? Also we really don't wanna get labeled as spammers, so we're worried that doing email marketing might get us flagged with ISPs - how do we avoid that? Thanks.

Email marketing works but you need to do it the right way...

    Use double opt-in...

Don't buy lists with millions of email address...

Collect leads through squeeze pages offering something free that your prospect will value (you then upsell them something related to this free product - an expansion or something complementary)

Thanks for your feedback. Why double opt-in?

What's wrong with using a service to email 5 million opt-in people for say $300 - won't that do the trick?

They haven't opted in to YOUR list and I would question that these 5 million people have really opted in to have emails sent to them by lots of different people. Get Response is also a good choice.

The problem is these services is that the math just doesn't add up. 5 million emails sent for $300 - really? Well, how good can that list possibly be for that low of a cost?

High quality small lists that are targeted to your niche usually perform much, much better. Most of these big list emailings are worthless and you'll likely see very little response at all. Most of them are people's 2nd and 3rd email addresses that were sold, etc... and the traffic you will get will likely not be targeted or effective.

        Hope that helps...

Bingo! Never buy / rent a list. It's a waste of money.

Depending on your niche - solo ads are always a great way to drive traffic to both build a list and to make sales. As for building a list for traffic - you can't go wrong doing this, but you should invest your time and money into building your own email list.

Of course you can do it, as long they are active and real subscribers who opt-in to your mailing list. But quite frankly, don't try to spam them with some useless and irrelevant broadcast emails for you to generate traffic and sales.

Always give value to your subscribers so that they can trust you, and will get you more clicks for good.

Yes it works and it works well. The url to your site doesn't work though.

It is always a good idea to collect the info from the person so you can market to them in the future too.

Hi, email marketing actually works pretty well for long term business. If you are doing solo ads, you should do a signup form and put it in your website, so whenever the visitors coming, they might signup as your member and you can keep followup with them in future.

Yep, the first thing that happens when you visit the site (once it's up) is it asks for your email. So I just need to send tons tons tons of traffic to the site and then convert it into sign-ups.

How can I do this using email? Is my only option going with the million-user opt-in lists? Do I have to pay these companies every time - can't I just buy a list like that and use it myself whenever I want?

Take em to a page with low leakage and a compelling call to action for them to sign up, then after they sign up slingshot them to some juicy content

Single or double optin is semantics. If you do double make sure the company you choose has good delivery on their confirmation servers. This is less a issue if your self hosting a virgin info piece on a virgin ip with a self hosted AR.

Culture the list the way you would build a garden and you will have regular fruit. Email marketing is a great push button cash method.

It sure can drive traffic. But it does more. It provides targeted traffic from potential customers! Isn't that the best traffic?

And it still does even more than getting targeted traffic for you.

Ever sell a business? One of the things a potential buyer will often ask is "Does the business have an email marketing list?". Why? Because it's now part of the evaluation process and one of the most valuable assets for many companies. Developing an email list will build value for your business.

Setup some squeeze pages to develop targeted emails lists for your business.

This was the best move I ever made.

I don't even like sending customers to my core websites. I've moved to promoting squeeze pages that build email lists and then send them to the core website.

Give them a free product, video demo, email course, etc and build your own list. It will pay off with more traffic, more sales, and it adds value to your online business.

yes, email marketing work. especially if the list is targeted. for me personally as an example i have a list of forex emails (optin of course) and these number up to about 1.5million and anytime we have a promo or are giving out discounts, we just send them a message and get as much as 120,000$ in sales. so it works. depends on where you got your list from or if your list is targeted. if you don't want to be flagged as spam, put in unsubscribe link in your emails, your physical address and a small note telling the recipient why they are receiving your msg or how you got their email and trust me, you'll be SAFE. so go for it. i can help with my experience if you want. all the best.

  • Yes email marketing works for sure and in my opinion is the best way to ensure long term success in IM. It is 10 times easier to sell to someone who has bought from you before than it is to create a new customer. And without a list of who has bought, how could you sell to the same people? Building an email list using Aweber is probably the best way. Building a list can generate income on demand. If you have a list of buyers then you can send one email to that list and people will buy from you again if you have positioned the product correctly and have built a relationship with your list. You will also need to have some sort of follow up email series. My List building course will show you exeactly how to build a killer list and how to get traffic to your squeeze pages to grow your list. But yes email marketing can be highly successful. I know of many people who have become financially independent using these methods. But be sure to do a double opt in list to avoid getting spam complaints.

    Peace and Love,

Bout time to get yourself an Aweber account brotha!

Instead of using your budget to buy a big email list (which is probably crap anyways) why dont you guys setup a squeeze page or facebook fan page and spend your money on Facebook Ads and drive traffic to that new squeeze page to generate your leads and email list?

I can assure you that will yield ya better results.

However, if you got a good deal on the email list, it might be worth a shot. Make some good decisions.

I know someone personally sent out 100,000s emails per day for his store, and he would have upwards of 20 sales per day from those emails alone... so it does work. In most cases that seems to be illegal these days, so be mindful of that.

OP seems to be talking about co-reg or scraped email addresses. I would be really surprised to find a list of double optins that was 5 million for 300 dollars. it's possible, but unlikely I suspect.

Co reg and scrapes are notoriously non-targeted. If you had every single item for sale under the sun on your website, you could probably make some sales like that. Whether you can make back your list rent in the time it takes before your ISP or your host shuts you down, is another question.

Aweber is not going to allow that kind of importing. Even if you rent the list, that still does not mean you are not sending UCE. And you are going to be left holding the bag.

It all comes down to how targeted the email list is. Will you be considered a spammer if you pay some company to blast your offer to their lists?

    Yes, definately.

In todays world offers received by consumers that are not in the form of endorsements from companies that they have a memorable existing relationship or offers that are just strait promotions from third party companies sent by bulk mailing companies are considered by the consumer as spam.

Most legitimate companies establish the "permission" or "opt-in" for their specific companies offer first.

Many companies request permission to send offers from their "partners" but again this is generally sent in the form of an endorsement or introduction from the actual company that the subscribers have a trusted existing relationship with.

The most effective email marketing campaigns come from building your own opt-in lists and developing a relationship with the subscribers.

You might be better off investing your money in PPC or CPA campaigns and capturing the subscribers from traffic you generate that way.

If money is no option I would consider hiring a reputable email copywriter who may also be able to advise on email marketing and possibly on buying lists versus building your own etc etc since he or she will want to know more about your target market.

I'm not really familiar with your business or market and scale so I'm going to stay clear of getting involved in recommending auto-responder hosts and single versus double opt-in list... split testing and tracking your email results.

Good luck... and hell yeah can email marketing work. Everyone from airlines to supermarkets are using email to stay in touch, educate and sell their products. It's all about following up until people buy, die or unsubscribe.

    Good luck!

Should you decide to use email as a source of traffic, I would advise you to ALWAYS experiment small before you go fullscale. That way, you get to save thousands from spammers. A dollar saved is a dollar earned.

There are many out there who will take your money for nothing

    My 2 cents.

Yes, but you must start by putting the necessary logistics in place. This begins with the optimization of your website's opt-in form and newsletter archive. The opt-in form should be short, using drop down menus, radio buttons, and checkboxes to make it quick and easy for subscribers to fill out; but it should also capture pertinent information about your subscribers

    Hi,
Emails play role in increasing or decreasing your ranking factors. Google focuses on the channel or platform from where Emails are delivering and than gives rank to it accordingly. Remember that how nice you will write a quotation of Email, so nice it will be treated from ranking department for your website promotion and value.

It can work well, but start with a small test first to judge the ROI.

But make sure that they are not just sending the test emails to their "openers" - subscribers known to open the emails they are sent. That can give a false impression of ROI - and if you scale up your spend on that basis, you could lost money.
