Just took control of my own hosting

I took a big jump today when I applied for a reseller account with my local web hosting company. This way I can setup as many domains as I like with the exact configuration I want per site.

Big investment (relatively speaking) but the first step to really 'owning' my online business instead of being dependant on someone else to get it propogated etc. HUGE learning curve ahead since I don't actually have a clue how to do it but ... about to start reading the manual

Great job taking that step, Di!

I know what you mean about it being a leap. Even as cheap as hosting and domains can be these days, it's an expense and one you have to justify by actually putting in the work. For me it really helped to see that billing statement and know I had to do something with the site to make back what I put in.

Hopefully the same will be true for you!

I think most marketers nowadays will opt for the reseller account after all a good chunk of people will have many websites to start with as they jump in head first into every niche they beleive they can sell in.

    Good luck with your business.

No real need to buy reseller hosting if youre hosting more than one site for yourself. Buying hosting that allow unlimited domain addons is perfectly fine.

Having your additional domains added on as addon domains still gives you 100% "total control", not sure what's missing.

Could you explain what you'll be doing differently with reseller hosting that you couldnt do, or "control" with your normal hosting?

    Thanks

      Hi
My hosting provider had specific plans with x amount of disk space and bandwidth. Some of my sites will be bigger and some smaller. I did the maths and worked out that it would be cheaper to get the reseller account so the I can setup the exact configuration per site instead of having to pay the various different rates for the different plans.

Economy of scale is the correct term I believe

So were you buying a new hosting account for each new site you were making? As in paying (for ex) $5/month PER site?

I just want to clear up that you can have an unlimited amount of websites in 1 hosting account.

Not with my service provider. Checked out GoDaddy too and they charge you per website.

Then you were/are getting ripped off (sorry if thats blunt). Go with a high quality hosting provider who offers you "10 addon domains" or "Unlimited Addon Domains".

I pay $4.95 a month and I'm hosting 16 websites... I've been with my provider for over a year now with zero downtime and zero problems.

Do some research and you'll probably save yourself a TON of money per month...

That's what I get for responding after I'd just woken up. Yeah, looking into it I think you can probably find a much better price if you're not actually looking to resell. My host has an unlimited domain plan that I use, and it's pretty cost-effective.

If you just want to have a place to store multiple domains and don't actually have an interest in reselling those sites then I'd see if you can get your plan cancelled (have you given them phone verification yet? A lot will cancel outright if you don't, like HostGator) and find something that offers unlimited domains.

                Exactly my point aswell.

Look into another hosting provider that offers unlimited domains for a much cheaper price.

Dont worry about getting a dedicated server, or VPS. Dont worry about IPs and nameservers or unix shell access. All of that is completely unnecessary if you're running a couple sites right now.

Unless your website is getting 10k hits a day, and it's a database driven website (like a forum or something) then you dont need anything more than a simple shared hosting account that offers unlimited addon domains.

Most so called "unlimited" hosting actually has some limits. For example...

              This is from Bluehost's TOS:
Bluehost.com reserves the right to limit processor time, bandwidth, processes, or memory in cases where it is necessary to prevent negatively impacting other Subscribers.

              These are from Hostgator's TOS:
User may not: Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds.

              And:
Sites that slightly exceed our inode limits are unlikely to be suspended; however, accounts that constantly create and delete large numbers of files on a regular basis, have hundreds of thousands of files, or cause file system damage may be flagged for review and/or suspension.

Bandwidth Usage: You are allocated a monthly bandwidth allowance. This allowance varies depending on the hosting package you purchase. Should your account pass the allocated amount we reserve the right to suspend the account until the start of the next allocation, suspend the account until more bandwidth is purchased at an additional fee, suspend the account until you upgrade to a higher level of package, terminate the account and/or charge you an additional fee for the overages. Unused transfer in one month cannot be carried over to the next month.

Have you ever tried to read through ALL the legalese in your host's TOS? I would be willing to bet there are some "surprise" limitations.

The only reason I am aware of this is over the past several years there have been post here at the WF in which the OPs are surprised to find their accounts terminated, or the host then requires them to go with a more expensive (larger) account. And these were hosting accounts that were supposedly "Unlimited."

              Are we having fun yet?

              :-Don

I'm not quite following you on why you bought the reseller package but if it works out for you great. However with Hostgator and their $10 a month plan I can host "unlimited" sites and have "unlimited" diskspace. The ""'s being if I begin to take up too much of the processor they will want me on a different plan. The reason I bring this up is if you only have a few sites a plan like that will save you a lot of money but if you have a lot of sites you're running then a reseller plan is the best way to go. Again I don't know the specifics of your business and wish you the best either way

      • Many hosts, like mine, offer a package where you can have 25 domains hosted for one price (in my case $24.95/month). It's saved me a bundle over the bad old days where I had to pay $9.95/month/per domain.

What I like about my hosting company is I have shell access in Unix. None of this cPanel nonsense.

Just took the jump and got my first VPS myself - had about 4 shared hosting accounts before this with probably 10-15 sites on each and it was just getting to be too much! Congrats

Reseller hosting is just shared hosting with a WHM license. I HIGHLY recommend going all the way and switching to either VPS or dedicated hosting. You'll need root access, independent resources, and unique IPs and nameservers more in the long run.

My reply was aimed the response by dOrk. He was saying you should not have gone to a reseller account because you should use a hosting company that offers "unlimited" hosting.

I am saying that is not true, because even when a hosting company calls their service "Unlimited," there usually are limitations. It is possible he did not read his hosting company's TOS.

You are building a business. You did the right thing, albeit maybe a lot sooner than you needed to, but you did do the right thing.

I just created my first package with the exact configuration I wanted and setup my first website on my own. That was intensive learning but what a rush
