Hello All,

I am in the process of designing my site for our travels.

DO I blog (never blogged in my life) or do I write my stories and just have it as content?

What difference is it going to make?

I am putting a forum on the site too so we can chat with relatives ect.

Suggestions Ideas?

Cheers

Danny

PS ourworldtour.co.uk (just getting the basics down first then get all photos in ect later on)

The difference is ease of publishing. With a blog you can set one up in 10-20 mins. The cool thing about blogs is the ability to leave comments. Instead of setting up a forum just to chat with relatives you could have the conversation right there on your blog under your articles/content.

By the way, what's your other option if you didn't use a blog? A static HTML website?

    Hello,

Well I was just going to write it as content on the site have day one day two ect.... that way I can order it better... I dont want massive long pages and I think that it would work better.

lol I think I have answered my own question

You can blog and have your posts only be the first portion, for the rest they have to click on a "read more" and that link takes them to your site, or forum or wherever you have the rest of the story. Best of both worlds.

You can use Wordpress but have each day on a page. Then you can have the pages listed in your sidebar so they can just click on the page link to read that days entry.

Much easier than doing just a html content site, Wordpress is definately the better way to go I think.

yeah go with both. a blog for your daily content where you can chat directly if need be and then a link to your forum board. some webhosts have this built in so you can just as easily set it up as you can a blog

I definitely say blog if only that it's the best way to learn about php/sql and you'll have fun tweaking all the wordpress settings.

I used to just update my static site in dreamweaver and resave through FTP, but eventually, like you, decided to just start a blog for fun and ended up learning a huge amount.

Don't get blogging confused with anything else. Blogging is just one way to get your message out there and it's one of the easiest. I would get your members to post their stories and pictures to the blog. Also find other places you can post, comment on other blogs and look into video. Video is really becoming mainstream now and it's really easy to do.

Well I have been using drupal so theres no need to play around with html its just a case of writing it as you would a blog.

    I could use both though

    Hey Danny,

What is your opinion of drupal?

I really haven't used it. Any thoughts on how it compares to Wordpress and Joomla?

I'm trying to figure out if its worth learning for any reason.

Yeah, blogging is definitely the way to go as that it's the best way to learn about general php/sql and you can have a lot fun tweaking and experimenting with all the wordpress settings. I used to routinely update my static website info and settings in Dreamweaver and resave through FTP, but eventually I decided to just start a blogging for fun and ended up learning a huge amount as well as making more traffic for my own webpage. Good luck and hope this helps!

I would suggest a blog. Wordpress is very versatile and user friendly.

Our family has a blog along with a "picture" blog on a sub domain. We have had a blast with it.

Although it was setup for relatives to guest blog and post pictures in their own category... they were slow to interact at first.

A few videos made with jing showing them the "how to" helped a lot. Now we all share vacation photo's, recipes etc.

It's like a central hub to keep up with everyone and plan get a together or whatever. My inlaws made post as they traveled through Europe for instance.

Anyway... it was well worth the effort. Particularly the growing category of family recipes.

Ok, I have been playing with wordoress and dont like it. Drupal does pinging so I will just get that working. I might use blogger as well and link that back to the site.

I would like to monotenize the site but at the moment I would like to carry on building it for me first. I have good success with sites that i have designed around userability rather than money.

    Thanks for the tips

How about daily blogging, sending the posts to Twitter, then if you write about something that's evergreen (long-term content, maps, restaurant guides, a wonderful life-changing moment...) make a page out of it instead of just a post.

Sounds like a wonderful adventure...have a great trip!
