Duplicate Content & Google Question

Hey Warriors,

I have a question about Google, duplicate content and penalties. We have someone who posts to our blog (basically reposts what he has on his own personal blog). What he does is cut and paste the first few paragraphs from his own blog posting to our site then puts a link to his full posting. I asked him if he could not cut and paste but at least just put a summary of his posting and then his link b/c the cut and pasted part might be seen as duplication by Google. He thinks that just changing the first sentence should be fine as long as it is above the cut and pasted part. Also his title is the exact same as well. He doesn't change that either.

Please help!!! What do you think is the best thing to do to keep the integrity of our site where this is concerned.

If you're worried about Google - don't worry about it.

Google's "Duplicate content" is based on THE SITE, not the content on THE INTERNET.

Google doesn't want to see 2+ of the exact same thing on your site, they don't mind if it's from elsewhere though.

If it was that case, content syndication would be utterly screwed. And I know from personal experience as well as Alexa Smith, Bill Platt and MYOB that this just isn't the case.

I personally would not allow him to do it just to be extra precautious. I think you are correct in saying that he should write a brief summary that doesn't involve copying text from his original blog post. And then link it. I would suggest that the summary be between 200-300 words.

Thanks both of you! I will see what more Warriors say also on this b/c I can see w/ the duplication on the same site makes total sense and also the point about the cut and pasting not allowing for our site to look like we have original content.
