BS E-mail Subject Lines = Instant Unsubscribe

I don't know about you, but I hate BS subject lines. You know, the kind that try to trick you into opening them - but the subject line and the content are totally different?

If you're new to IM and think that this might be a good idea (because, hey, it gets you good open rates) think again. Annoying your list is NOT a good idea.

The latest idiot to e-mail me with a BS subject line (and get an instant unsubscribe) use the subject line:

"Hey Kevin , I've been trying to get ahold of you..."

I opened it because maybe it was someone trying to get ahold of me. NOPE, just some sleazy piece-of-crap marketer stooping low to get their e-mail opened. "Sayonara, sucker"

This idiot lost me forever. So, I ask you, do you think this is a good tactic?

Exactly! An open is not a conversion. Getting the subscribers to open is one thing but you need to carry through the rapport all the way through.

If you have a good relationship with your list you don't need to use BS lines like that.

Send you list value value value then add a bit more value then maybe send them an offer that is in line with the niche you are in.

    Works every time

I agree it's a very poor tactic. Sure, they got our attention but have irritated us in the process.

I think it all boils down to the rising competition in IM, and everybody is trying to get heard, well some hitting below the belt.

I have very little patience for subject lines which are misleading or in poor taste.

I got one last week which simply said DEATH. And yes, it was all caps.

    Instant unsubscribe for that one.

For me it's a very simple choice. I choose to do business with, spend time with, and get to know better, only those people who are interested in building a genuine business relationship with me.

If you don't respect me enough to value my time or my sensibilities, you're toast.

The ones I hate the most go along the lines of:

    "Here are your login details"

    "You've got a commission"

    "Re: Your download details"
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5705264].message }}
  • Same here. Lame subject lines like "Your Refund Request" or "You've Earned A Commission", or bull**** like that gets my instant unsubscribe.

The most common sort I get is the "You have received a Payment" variety.

When you open it up, it normally starts with something like "Using this great system/product/software, you could have e-mails with that subject line every few minutes!"

    Lame, Lame, Lame.

To stop the "open reflex action" for emails like these, occasionally, I have signed up to lists under an assumed name. Like "Loser", "A**wipe" - you can be creative here.

So, the subject line like "Hey A**wipe , I've been trying to get ahold of you..." would at least give me a chuckle as I deleted it.

I unsubscribed from all the BS lists I was on a while ago.

The few lists I am currently on wouldn't do that (if they ever do... unsubscribe).

Having said that, these people do these things for one of 2 reasons:'

    1) These tactics work

    or

    2) These people mistakenly think these tactics work.

I am not sure which is the case.

I couldn't agree with you more, Kevin! They're an automatic unsubscribe for me as well.

Why would I (or anyone) want to buy from someone who uses deception?

Definitely not a smart move if someone is trying to sell something. I've seen quite a few sites online suggesting that marketers use these type of subject lines to increase the chances of the email being opened but like davejug1 mentioned: an open does not result in a conversion. Unfortunately I still receive a lot of emails like this.

    Agreed,

    And these:
    "Your Commissions are Waiting"
    "Your Requested Download Is Ready"
    "Your Username And Password"
    "[1] New Facebook Message"
"Software License For [Your Email Here]"
    "I Found Something Of Yours"
"Private Beta Tester Invite" with a link inside to an open clickbank product...

And thousands of others. I am unsubscribing from every single one of them. Sometimes I also contact the sender and lets him know that he is using deceiving headlines and that he just lost a bunch of subscribers.

    Basic email truths:

If someone clicks your link and does not buy, that reduces your conversion. It would have been better if they didn't click the link. So tell them what they'll find on the other end.

If someone opens your email and does not click the link, that reduces your clickthru rate. It would have been better if they didn't open the email. So tell them what's really in the email.

If someone gets your email and doesn't open it, that reduces your open rate. It would have been better if they didn't get the email at all. So every once in a while, tell your list to go do something, and delete whoever doesn't do it from the list.

Stop hoarding big numbers at your list provider. People who don't open your emails, click your links, and buy your stuff are just a waste of money. Get them off your list. Don't try to trick them into it. Just get rid of them. There are more than enough people who ACTUALLY WANT YOUR STUFF out there, and life is too damn short to waste your time arguing with people who don't want it.

Instead of trying to come up with an interesting title they are resorting to

    "You've got Commissions" etc etc

Misleading titles are so sneaky and spammy that it warrants an instant unsubscribe,
no matter how good or successful you think the person sending you those emails is.

Once they start sending misleading titles, they can't help you anymore...they are just trying to sell you "anything"

Unsubscribe and tell them why you did.

Then there's the subject lines that start with PERSONAL:
Although that's a variation on some of the ones already mentioned.
