How often to post?

I don't think there is absolute right answer to that question but I think if you are serious then a minimum of once a week but preferrably a lot more.

With my blog that have only started a month ago but is on page 1 for lots of important queries in my niche already and gets most of its traffic organically, I post every 2 days to the blog.

Then try and do article or forum marketing every other day.

I thought this was about posting on this forum. Anyway, I would say once a week, sometimes a few times a month, depending if I have much to say

I reckon a minimum of once a week.... I write about twice.....

Assuming that you're creating this niche blog for the purpose of making money from targeted buying search engine visitors and not to engage non-buying social referral infotainment seekers you should create your base content, typically about 10 articles, and post those over about week. Then you stop posting.

Next, you work on building incoming links to your blog until you start seeing search traffic. You'll want to use something like StatCounter to determine what keywords people are using to find your site. Using these keywords as a guide, gradually expand to include more buying keywords by adding more articles based. If you find other keywords to consider from other sources, add these in too. Typically in this process you'll add 1-3 articles. Then you wait and link build using your old and new keyword anchors, starting the process over again.

You can even leave a blog untouched for a year or more and, as long as you've done your incoming link building well, you'll get significant targeted traffic. For example, I've got two blogs that haven't been updated, other than new WP and plugin versions and occasional visitor comments, since late 2007 and they each get, on average, 1000 unique visitors a day.

If you can hack it I would try to post everyday in the beginning, maybe the first two months. If you miss some days don't sweat it, but the more you write the faster you will see results. Just remember to never sacrifice quality for quantity. Keep in mind that not all of your posts need to be long or to in-depth. Do you know what a utility post is? Trackbacks? I would also suggest posting something new everyday for a while, and then trying to keep updated once or twice a week if possible. That has proven to bring me the most consistent results.

The spiders will find you regardless of the quanity of posts.

You cannot control SERP positioning however, you can control the user experience on your blog and also, recycle the traffic via autoresponder updates when new content is posted for your raving fans.

I ran a current affairs niche blog which relied heavily on timely updates in the industry and never once did I receive anything less than a thank you for my posting frequency.

Funny that Google was always at my doorstep waiting for for the next update then POOF! there it was fully indexed in minutes in the top position for my LT keywords that people were searching for (similar to google trends)... the downside is that the MSM (mainstream media) sites would always be a step behind me then they'd use their authority to push me down the SERPs in time.

I trained and fed those spiders well.

I have seen others in a competition to get to no. 1 page rank in google for the exact same keyword.

The one that had the most visitors and posted every day did not make the number 1 spot but the other did and was only postin 2 to 3 times a week.

as it was a wordpress blog he used the all in 1 SEO widget then overides it in his header with KEYWORDS and CONTENT.
