Wordpress, too much of a mess?

I've never had to uninstall and re-install Wordpress. Of course, I just use the Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven themes and customize them on my own to meet my needs. This way I know that the themes I use will be compatible with all plugins.

Maybe it's just the themes you choose or buggy plugins.

Yeah Robert, I agree with you, I have also used WordPress for blogs and even for my website and the plugins made my work easy

I look wordpress. When I first got started I tried using frontpage and tried doing everything by hand. What a nightmare it was.

Wordpress has made everything super simple for me. I can even have a website up and running in under an hour.

Not really sure what you are finding messy or buggy about it.
It seems to me to be one of the simplest platforms available.
It just takes setting up your site one time and you are good to go.
I have never had to uninstall and reinstall either because it was complicated or anything.
As for plugins, they are just there to add usefulness to your site. Not many at all that you would have to have if you don't want them.

I am aware of what you guys are saying, i ment it in a different way though.
To put it in more simple words, i ment to say that it doesnt give you complete freedom yet if you choose many plugins then it creates a huge mess because some plugins will not work well with others, it will keep coliding and making a mess.
I was not talking about simple themes with a couple of plugins in it, for that matter WP is excellent!

You can always use the dot com version if you want to keep things simple. That way, you'll never ever find a malfunctioning plugin or a conflict!

Although I come from a long, deep programming background, I LOVE using Wordpress for my IM business. Available themes and plugins make most things a real snap. True, there is always a price - in this case you give of some flexibility (which you still have if you really want to make changes inCSS and PHP) and possible compatability issues.

For me, the trade offs are almost always worth it.

much simpler and less messy, you could always hire a programmer to build you
a CMS as per your requirements.

Hey Ryan, Wordpress is among the better blog/cms frameworks available in the open source arena.

I used Joomla for nearly 4 years and when I moved to Wordpress, truly wordpress is much simpler to use.

I have tried drupal too, which is great but is too technical.

I am a software engineer by profession and can handle the technicality but still I prefer wordpress.

Wordpress is the best choice or I would say truly is the simplest framework available.

Definitely what you say is true, if you have too many plugins then they would probably have integrity issues with each other, but thats bound to happen in every framework you use.

Its a good practice to install only the necessary plugins you need, generally few plugins I always have on my wordpress sites are:

Membership Frameworks
Raw HTML / Exec PHP
Contact Forms
Affiliate Tools Plugins
To Do list plugins
Page ordering and categorization plugins
SMTP plugins
Table plugins
Backup Plugins
And the necessay widgets.

Wordpress works fine with all these together.

I would have to disagree. I have been using WP for the past 3 years now. It is great, plus the power behind all of those plugins is worth the rare headache for the many extra ones they solve beforehand.

My blog is closing in on it's 700th post on Wordpress, and I would never have been able to do that without the system.

Its as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.
Go to users>add new, select role as 'editor' and create. Then log in as that editor - you have exactly what you described in the OP!

To be honest, I couldn't do a quarter of the things I do with my sites in a cost-effective manner without Wordpress. I feel my Amazon sites are as successful as they are mostly as a result of Wordpress.

This platform is truly as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Heck, I even make use of all kinds of custom templates so all my posts look different and as complex as it sounds, it only takes a few minutes to create a custom template.

I'm still a big Wordpress fan after using it for many years. The few problems I've had were caused my me fiddling or, once, by installing a free theme which had some dodgy code hidden in it. I had to go into the database to dig the bad code out.

Yes, Wordpress has grown a little more complicated, but it also has more features, some of which are better than the older ones.

Not had any real problems with plugins either - but I try to ensure the plugins are compatible with my version of Wordpress and do not do something similar to what another plugin is doing - that could cause conflicts.

Also, I am very careful with plugins which are not listed on Wordpress.org - they can contain dodgy code which can do nasty things. And beware of plugins which do very clever things - (tag management - popular posts) these can put a strain on the database and with lots of visitors, this can slow your site down, if not cause it the crash.

The only problems I've had with Wordpress have related to traffic and hosting which was not up to the job. I'm now using a Wordpress specific hosting service which has links to my theme maker and has pretty good security too. I'm very pleased with the service - best one I've found and I've tried 3 or 4.

Overall, I'd recommend Wordpress to anyone and, if they have the cash, getting a premium SEO theme is well worthwhile too.

No ... I would not want a "simple" CMS. Wordpress is highly functional and can be used in many ways (as landing pages, as membership sites, as static sites, as blogs, as squeeze pages, you name it). Thousands of plugins to choose from to do just about everything you could possibly need done.

I've never found Wordpress to be hard to use and the versatility is amazing.

Wordpress is good all the way. I had been using it and mostly tweak it on my own for changes that I wish to do. I think of a design for my site and use plugins and themes. But if I would want more than that, I change some codes. And I am good.

Yes, exactly like that, but able to produce many of the same appearances and outcomes as Wordpress. That's why I use TypePad instead.

I can't cope with Wordpress at all. And I know from many earlier discussions that I'm by no means alone in that.

I like to imagine that if I really had to use Wordpress, I could probably just about come to terms with it, and master it somehow, and make it do what I want it to do without tearing my hair out over it. And with the help and support of experts like Anne Pottinger and/or Istvan Horvath, possibly I could. But for now I've developed ways of building and running my business without needing to know how to use Wordpress. And for anyone else like me who either "just finds it too difficult" or "just isn't particularly interested in developing those skills", it's good that there are other, simpler alternatives available which have nearly the flexibility of Wordpress (albeit that they're relatively expensive ones, I think - i.e. they're not free like Wordpress).

So, to answer your question: yes, for me Wordpress is "too much of a mess".

If you don't want to deal with a mess of plugins, don't install plugins. It's a CMS, not a kiddie's playpen. You install what you need.

I used to use CMS Made Simple, and have tried many more. It was very nice for building static-style sites, but compared with Wordpress, maintenance was a headache. No auto-update for plugins or the core itself, too much manual configuration needed, etc. Pain in the arse, overall.

The real issues people seem to be having here are with themes. Most of them are blogging themes because Wordpress is still thought of, and promoted, primarily as a blogging platform rather than a general CMS. And outside of commerce, blogs are probably the most popular type of site out there, anyway.

Yes, there are many fine alternatives to suit all different purposes, but support for them is heavily diluted and often leaves much to be desired. For quick security updates and bugfixes, plugins for just about every function, and limitless potential for customisation, WP is cracking.

In regard to my earlier post, there is no longer need to do backups manually.

WP Twin (script) offers an add-on script that schedules backups as an upsell for $47.

There is even cheaper alternative developed by warrior Tamer: WP Twin Companion ($27)

Backup Buddy (plugin) also can schedule backups, and even Backup Creator (plugin) has now that funcion built in.

All of them can backup/restore the entire wp blog, complete with all settings, customisations, everything, they create the exact clone of the original installation.

This is GREAT because now we can schedule backups, say daily, and if anything happens, quickly restore the site the way it was one day before the incident.

Now by having this fantastic option available and by applying all standard security measures, I think that everybody who runs wordpress sites can relax.

WordPress is overkill for many websites. Simpler site builders are a better solution for people who don't need 'blogging features.' Wordpress can get pretty expensive, too, if you actually purchase premium themes and plugins.

I still blog on WordPress but I wouldn't recommend it for everyone.
