I'm Getting Traffic, But List Building Is SLOW

Hey guys,

I'm getting a decent bit of traffic ~350/day.

People are sharing my articles/ideas from my articles in my market's most popular forums.

I'm getting a steady stream of user interaction. Lot's of comments, lot's of people coming back to read my reply to their comments and thank me.

However, not many people seem to be joining my mailing list.

My free giveaway is right on track with my top competitor's, so theoretically my lead-gen piece shouldn't be the problem.

Anyway...

Here's what's NOT working for me so far.

1. Viperbar/Hellobar - 2,000+ Impressions, Only 3 signups?

2. Sidebar optin form

3. Link in navigation bar that takes them to a dedicated optin page - Not many people are clicking it

Here's some things I'm going to test, take a look at them and maybe offer some other ideas:

1. Rotate banners on my blog that direct traffic to the optin page.

2. Signup form at the bottom of each post

3. Paragraph of text with a call to action at bottom of each post that directs traffic to the optin page.

4. Popup Domination

5. Having a sticky post on the homepage of my blog that says something like "START HERE" or "GET YOUR FREE STARTERS KIT - Yada, Yada, Yada" when they click that post it would explain all the free stuff they get, and have an optin form in the post.

Any and all input is welcome.

Thanks in advance

Try optinskin plugin. It puts a box below your posts. People who would otherwise leave your site are likely to optin.

maybe u're giving too much information in your blog, so they think they don't have to opt-in to your list?

      Hayzl,

      Thanks for the input!

That could totally be the problem for a lot of bloggers (and I think it is)
but in my situation I've got less than 10 posts, so I think there's plenty of questions still unanswered to my potential prospects.

Perhaps you can try revising your sales copy.

Reminder: It's actual people you're trying to get to opt-in. People only want things which they see beneficial to their own interests. If you offer a free product to as an incentive to opt-in, then you need to make sure the product will 'solve' or 'educate' the person who's opting in.

They have to really believe that they'll benefit from your free product. If you can get them to believe the benefits in your copy, then you'll get more opt-ins.

So try revising your copy to 'benefit' your subscribers.

PM me if you would like more help on the subject. I'm willing to help you out as much as I can.

sidebar and pop ups dont generally convert that well anyway

as deepak says above, try opt in skin plug in

thats on my list to get too, it looks really good

i would imagine that having a sticky homepage would bore most people because if you have repeat and any loyal followers they won`t want to see the same sticky home page everytime they come to your blog

it might work but you will have to test it

i would just imagine it would effect your user interaction too much and be in peoples face too much

what does your main squeeze page convert at? if it converts really well then yeah push that a lot more. Im not usually happy unless my squeeze page is converting at at least 40%

going from the amount of traffic that you say your getting your opt in rates are very poor, unless the traffic is very broad and not targeted. With the sort of numbers you have mentioned I would hope to be getting way way more subscribers than your are currently getting

      Hey Paul,

So far it's converting at about 38%.

The problem is getting my blog readers from my blog articles over to the optin page. Lol

theres tonnes of things you can do to improve it so dont worry, here`s a few

        1. use a pop up opt in box, i actually find mine converts higher than a sidebar box
        2. split test your sidebar copy
        3. split test your pop up copy
        4. add the optin skin plugin to get opt in boxes below every post
        5. Include the word free in your nav bar going to your squeeze page
        6. sprinkle your main squeeze page link in some of your blog posts
        7. make your content more engaging so people will want to see more of your stuff

these are not ground breaking tips and any one won`t make a massive difference but using all of them together will increase your opt in rates quite nicely :-)

List building via blogging is effective...but in my experience slower than other methods. Are you in a position where you can leverage some paid traffic sources?

If you can find solo ads and/or high traffic sites/forums in your niche & pay for advertising, you could send people to a simple squeeze page as opposed to your blog.

I too have just downloaded and am implementing pop-up domination, so will do this together. They promise 304% increase on sign-ups and opt-ins; so let's keep in touch and try each other's progress.

I appreciate what you folks have written above, and helpful hints or comments on exit pops?

Blessings all, wishing you good business!

well it's good that you've managed to get a decent amount of traffic. you've got to focus on tracking your conversion rate and figure out why people are choosing not to optin.

This is not the total end-all answer, you should still test and try other things like you are doing, but it is something else to think about:
make a post (or interact on your market's forums you mentioned) asking people what they would like to see and what information would make your site more useful to them. Don't ask why they aren't opting in or suggest that you are having trouble getting opt-ins in any way, just see what kind of information they are looking for and see if you can make that part of your free giveaway. I know you are on par with your lead competitor but do you know if he is getting big opt-ins? he could be in the same boat. Opt-ins may be higher when people really want what you are giving away.

May I ask what methods you used to get that traffic? Word of mouth/paid/organic?

Ive had amazing results with an lightbox overlay that grabs their attention as soon as they visit my site. You can set it so they only see it once, once a week, once a day or every time etc. Grab up pop up domination and start getting more opt ins fast

A couple of things come to mind right off the top. First how you get your traffic is the most important factor. If you are using strategies the offer up high numbers of untargeted visitors it's not worth anyone time or money. Then when you get them to your site what do you offer them. A lot of people want to build a dazzling site that is made to impress. And while you don't want to "put a for sale sign on a dirty car" You want to make your first meeting quite in your face look at this awesomeness I'm going to give you for free. In other words hit them straight on when they get to your page with something very special that they can get something of great value just for opting in. Don't give them too much else to look at. If you lose them now they are gone forever. This is very high priority.

If you are getting targeted traffic and you list is not building They are not focused enough on your offer (not seeing it because of other distracting features), or your offer is not good enough or the way you describe it is not compelling enough.

If you convert this advise to changes on your site your list will grow like crazy.

Have you tried blatantly to ask them to sign up with a "Hey guys, I know you guys comment and that's great, but in order for me to see how much you guys really want me to keep updating you, opt-in right now and I'll keep you updated about all the new and exciting things I'm doing."

Nothing beats directly asking and you can try the sympathy card, "Hey guys, my email list is lonely and I want to see if my software is working for my email so can you sign up and try it out so I can do a test? I'll also give you automatic updates as well."

    2. Sidebar optin form
    That should be at 5%.

    3. Link in navigation bar that takes them to a dedicated optin page - Not many people are clicking it
That should be 1% maybe less so I agree.

    1. Rotate banners on my blog that direct traffic to the optin page.

    2. Signup form at the bottom of each post
You should already be doing that.

    3. Paragraph of text with a call to action at bottom of each post that directs traffic to the optin page.

    4. Popup Domination
#3 isn't necessary if you do #2. If you do #4 with Popup Domination you shouldn't do #2 either.

    5. Having a sticky post on the homepage of my blog that says something like "START HERE" or "GET YOUR FREE STARTERS KIT - Yada, Yada, Yada" when they click that post it would explain all the free stuff they get, and have an optin form in the post.
    Excellent idea.

If you want to thank you just press thanks.

See? I just told you how to thank me and your followers should do the same. Sometimes you just have to tell them.
