15k a month - here's how...

Ok - this is a bit of a brain dump so excuse typos and grammar!

This may not work for everyone but it's done me well... I left work almost 6 months ago and not looked back.

My main site is a blog with several video courses as products.

So here's how :

My main site started life as a blog around 2 years. Back then all i really did to promote it was post some links up on forums whenever there was a new post (around 1 a week). Over time it started to grow as i was adding more and more content and pages started ranking.

Where it really exploded was when i started to outsource the content generation which meant 3 or 4 posts a week. Of course from day 1 i was also collecting email addresses which now amount to around 26,000 all laser targeted for the niche so any new products that go up i have a ready audience.

Through on page and off page SEO i've pretty much sown up google rankings for a load of key words for the niche so i'm getting a couple thousand visits a day - and it's still growing... i have 3 sites now with another 2 in the pipe to launch very soon - my team is now 6 people creating content and working on promoting the sites on various forums and off course the big one outside of Google is Facebook...

I kick started of the Facebook audience with paid ads which got me several thousand quite quickly - all those ads were for likes for the FB page rather than sell them or push them to the site - i'm happy with the likes as every new post that goes up they see (well some of them, i believe FB only lets a 3rd of your fans see the content you have to pay for the others to see now)... a soft sell to them and never try the hard sell on them. I hope they click through and sign up then i have them into an autoresponder chain of free content and eventually i sell the courses.

Seems to work!

So in short I would make set up the blog and don't worry so much about monetization at first - build up a loyal audience and from day 1 capture emails and Facebook likes (I use the WP plugin popup domination to collect emails - people don''t like popups and as an advocate of user experience i generally hate them also ... but my sign up rate tripled when i added that so i'm not complaining here!).

Forum marketing is a great way to build a fan base - the trick to this is to search for high traffic forums in your niche and never be selling. Simply answer a post a day on each forum as helpful as you can and just make sure your site link is in your signature. Over time this will make you an authority - and that's really when the magic happens...

When they sign up on your site offer them something for free - a report or video or something and then set up 5 or 6 email auto-responders to go out once every couple of days (actually what this is doing is building trust but also getting them used to you mailing them every other day - great when you start selling products!)

Try and post every other day and make sure the link to that post goes out through all your channels - FB, Google + or Twitter - whatever you are using... but be consistent.

Slowly add in monetization - affiliate program is probably a good starting point although the end goal would be your own products and have your own affilaite program!

I'd avoid adsense or 3rd party adevrtising - you are essentially sending traffic to your competitors for a few cents. When you have the ads on your site should point to your own products!

I send out 3 emails a week to each of my lists. 1 is a newsletter roundup of what's been on the site, 1 is a sales email and 1 is a 'thought of the week' when i give a little ramble about something in the niche. Seems to work and my open rates / clickthroughs are steady around 23% and 37%

As your site is growing SEO is ultra important - and this will also benefit from a clean WP build and some solid use of tags/categories. In terms of actual on page SEO try the Yoast plugin on WP - best one i have found (even has a google keyword suggester built in and a little checklist to show you how well the page will perform).

Split test everything - even a simple change in headline can double your conversion rate.

Analytics - I study my analyitcs in great detail once a week. Lots to learn there about your customer habits.

I use hellobar to drive traffic or to increase sign ups - works very well.

Customer service - I still answer each and every email i get through the site personally. It makes a big difference i feel to actually have a real person answer and speak to them directly. I feel this is a big part of why my websites worked out the way they did.

And finally - really it's all about the content. If you offer great value and excellent content you will become an authority in your subject and you will have people begging to buy your products! It's worth in some point at the end of your autoresponder chain to actually just ask the sign up what product they actually would like to see - pretty much all of mine came from doing so and the result is a lot of happy customers!

Indeed, it's all about content. Based on the new google algorithm for generating traffic you need unique, high quality content, and of course meaningful.

Yes, I have 7 at the moment with another 3 on the way. Once my 2 new sites are up I'll develope for them also.

My next stage is 1 on 1 via Skype to each site and also looking to build a membership program into the sites.

You had to clog up the database with a 1000 word quote to post your ***** one liner? It seems to be a common strategy to make it look like a long post.

Once again, can't agree more with this part. It's all about the relationship, and offering real value. Ethically business is not only more profitable in the long-run, but more pleasurable as well.

As for the rest of the post, absolutely epic. Great break down of your work, thanks for putting it up.

Hopefully it inspires to take action! And gave a few ideas to some of the others as well.

    All the best.

Sounds like a good strategy to me. Only problem is the forum marketing part. It's getting damn near impossible these days to find forums(outside IM) that allow you to link to your site via the sig if there's even a tiny hint the site you're linking to might be used to make money.

Hi. I've never had this issue with any of the forums I use... There's around 5 or 6 high traffic forums I use (all still to this day in my top 10 traffic sources), I have used them for years in some cases a decade... So perhaps that is why no one seems to mind. If I was a brand new account perhaps...

Real talk. Many forums actively discourage promotional sigs. Quite a few have it turned off by default.

Actually yeah - i asked my Facebook fans if anyone would be interested in joining the team and i had quite a few applications. In fact because these people were passionate about the niche i found them much better suited than content writers from elance and some were actually willing to do it for free (on their insistance) - I pay between $150 and $300 a month to the various authors now.

Thanks for sharing. Couldn't agree more that you should always give quality contents to your visitors.

RLa, you can always find quality contents from article directories like EzineArticles and Squidoo or video directories like YouTube.

      Correct.

I did dabble with some other stuff along the way in other niches trying out autoblogs etc looking for a quick path... Funnily enough on the site I made I had an ebook made in a really odd niche , the site bombed but the book still sells on amazon - I believe it made it into the top 10 for that topic (not very interesting though)... I just got a cheque from amazon for it! But nothing much... In fact I neve cashed it , I like to tell people that story

But yeah in short... No fast track.

I used to come home from work and work on my blog until 1 or 2 am every day and weekends for most of the 2 years until I left my job. I fell out with my girlfriend a few times for it and got a lot of grief from people for being on the computer so much.

      I'm glad I was

It just felt right and I could see it growing, I knew if I kept going it would all work out. So there was some sacrifice, but it's all paid off and plenty more to come.

This is all off the top of my head... Maybe out on some of these, but roughly...

      Making a few $ from day 1
      Around 6 months til $25 a day ( I added affiliate products )
      Around a year to $ 100 a day ( was selling a 3rd parties product for 20% cut )
Around 1.5 year to 10k a month ( this was when I added video products )
2 years till 15k a month ( more video products added)
I'm looking for $1000 a day around spring next year. (new sites and videos in production now)

Google, Facebook, Twitter, Forums, my email list

      Are the main ones.

I've lately been experimenting with stumbledupon paid stumbles which have been very promising. Also reddit boards in my niche.

Well i'll let you into a little secret... I've never bought any ebooks, video products or WSO's or anything like that to learn about internet marketing.

Everything i have learned i have learned for free from this forum and another (Steve Pavlinas forum at first, then WF). I also bought a couple of books that have helped me along the way...

      They were
      • The 4 hour work week (this one kickstarted the whole thing)
      • Think and Grow Rich
      • The $100 Startup
      • The Millionaire Fastlane
      • Anything you want by Derek Sivers (founder of CDBaby)
There was also a few free reports from the war room - the one i keep returning to though is Jeremy Reeves - Double your profits in 60 days. I did actually reach out to him about his 1 on 1 services but he never responded...

      And that's pretty much it.

          Good question.

There are a few key players and YouTube is full to the brim with content of a similar nature... However no one has done the job properly with SEO and introduced the concept of Internet marketing such as auto responders, upsells etc (believe it or not)... Which is where I think I have an advantage.

It's all very faceless and the competition is all money hungry... Along with your customers person by person, offering generous discounts for loyal customers and generally not being a faceless company hungry for money also will see you rise to the top.

I would say that it's similar to the gold rush, except I'm the one selling the shovels

To get to this level takes time and consistent effort.

    But think about it!

Can you create content and share it on your blog, FaceBook, your subscribers, forums etc?

    YES YOU CAN!!!

Can you spend a few hours a day until you build an army of subscribers?

    YES!!!

Can you start with just 1 email you can send to your list and build from there?

    YES, YES, & YES AGAIN!

See guys this isn't rocket science but looking at the mountain can be pretty scary!

So take that one step and keep taking those necessary steps until you see the results appear before your very eyes.

    Taking action is vital!

Thanks for the great post. I have been thinking about setting up similar kind of site.

How did your site responded to the recent Google updates like panda and penguin? Would like to know that.

Hey great post. Content is key - question:

Did you create the content yourself, hire someone, have a team already in-house or outsource it?

    Thanks,

I have several people helping me now (almost all of them community members I found on Facebook or from comments on my site). First while I did it all myself...

Cost of business (mainly content prodcution) is around $900 per month.

Generous and inspirational post, thanks. I'm about at your 3 month stage, making $2-$300 per month. A lot of your advice I'm on track doing - quality original content, helping before selling, replying to queries personally. I will now try popup domination & hellobar, and have another look at moving more from affiliate to my own products. Facing another evening of content writing and marketing you've really pepped me up. You can pay $000's for this kind of advice, that's why I love this forum, a lot of generous successful people.

Hey, this is my first post ever on this forum, so hopefully I'm doing this right!

I'm just wondering - when you mentioned:
      Making a few $ from day 1
      Around 6 months til $25 a day ( I added affiliate products )
      Around a year to $ 100 a day ( was selling a 3rd parties product for 20% cut )
Around 1.5 year to 10k a month ( this was when I added video products )
2 years till 15k a month ( more video products added)
I'm looking for $1000 a day around spring next year. (new sites and videos in production now)
What was your general audience size at those stages? Not exact, of course, but just a general idea would be awesome!

First of all, thank you for this post. Great info! Nice upward trending on the traffic! I see you have 6 or 7 big spikes where you get about double the normal volume. Do you know what that is attributed to? Just curious if maybe you had promoted/launched a new or something.

            Yes, product launches.

You can also see the dip at Christmas then the traffic jumps end of 2011. This was a site redesign from the ground up.

Thanks for this information. Quality content is really the main driving factor. I think putting out content at a consistent rate as mentioned (once a week, etc..) is best. Allows your audience to know your schedule. Like all the big YouTube channels do, once a week, every Tuesday a new video, etc..

I like this quote. Someone think 15K per month is easily and will come immediately in the first 2-3 month. It is impossible! You have to build your credit, build costumers, create your own products, and much more. It is absolutely take much time and afford before reach this point.

Each blog has it's own set of products.
        Different domains for each blog.

The audience for them is similar so i cross promote between blogs with my own 'ads'.

      4 now.

How to focus? I used to come home from work and work my ass off on my sites knowing that if i cracked it i would never have to work for anyone else again.

That was more than enough motivation. It became quite addictive once the money came in. I remember making my first few $$ and thinking if only I could crack $100

Perseverance. It really is true - if you want it bad enough it will happen.

  • Hi Jeskola,

That was an excellent point. Thanks so much for sharing your successful strategy.

You mentioned your blog really started to take off when you started to outsource content creation.

I've been looking to do the same but I am struggling to find a decent outsource service. I've tried many but have a hard time finding a reliable freelancer who is both affordable and provides a quality service.

Most of the ones I worked with I need to consistently chase to get the work finished or modified to a decent standard. Most of the work is poor quality. I also get the feeling they take on more jobs then they can handle and don't put even near to 100% into them (not even 50% in my view).

Any suggestions on where to get good freelancers would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

As i mentioned above i was lucky to find a couple real good ones on elance - but the majority of who I use now were actually community members I found via my Facebook page - I just stuck up a message asking if anyone would be interested in contributing and i got several applications and I went from there.

  • It's all about what can you give for free. You keep doing this in your chosen niche until you build yourself a list of loyal subscribers, then you can charge for your paid products as the trust is already there. How often do you buy something from a name or company you do not know or trust?
