Anyone using Youtube's playlist feature for positioning?

Is anyone exploiting the Youtube playlist ability to create playlists that "position" your videos with the big names in your niche?

For example, let's say I released a music video and upload it to Youtube. I create a second Youtube account (perfectly within YT's TOS) and create a playlist of the following 4 videos:

Beatles
My music video
Rolling Stones
The Who

Or if I had a cheeseburger recipe video, I could make a playlist containing:

Gordon Ramsey's cheeseburger recipe
My cheeseburger recipe
Wolfgang Puck's cheeseburger recipe
Rachael Ray's cheeseburger recipe

The goal is to "position" yourself with the leaders in your niche so viewers will associate you with them, giving you additional "authority", as well as to siphon some of the popularity of those videos.

This may also help your videos appear as "related" videos on popular video view pages, which can be a great source of traffic to your video view pages.

Plus, the number of times your videos are used in playlists is a likely Youtube search factor.

You can use any and all public video on Youtube to create playlists, meaning if you can view it on Youtube, you can use it. Using playlists of popular videos and famous people is another way to market your videos on Youtube.

That's the kind of "honest sneaky" I love...

I've done it with article lists, but somehow the dime never dropped on doing the same thing with videos...

    Thanks, Kurt...

Great tip Kurt. Also to add if you use similar tags in the video's placed in a playlist you can rank all the videos together up the serps. I'm not actually doing so just yet but one of my partners are doing it quite successfully.

      Hey Manie,

This is similar to your personalized video response in some ways too. Including the movers and shakers in a niche in your playlists could get their attention.

It's also a good idea for "colabs", where you add my videos to playlists and I'll add your's.

Plus, playlists are included in the Youtube search, so it's an additional chance to get your videos ranked and seen.

Ok Kurt now the cats out of the bag. I was wandering when someone (you) was going to give out this great tip. I'm still a newb at this method or else I woulda done it. It sounds better coming from a seasoned pro like yourself than a newb.

This works minimally. Hate to kill dreams.

Thanks for that tip, Kurt. I've seen a few people try something similar on IMDB and Amazon as well . . .

For some reason it never occurred to me it would work on Youtube.

Pssst! Do you see how I mentioned your WSO without anybody realizing I did it?

Thanks for this Kurt. A great reminder for SEO. However, there is no (real) need to create another account. You can a playlist(s) that includes your own videos.

Maybe not mechanically, but psychologically it's a must. Consider the difference between me shouting that I'm as good as anyone else, and someone else saying the same thing. That "third-party endorsement" is what drives this tactic.

What keeps it on this side of the white-hat tracks is simply listing the videos as Kurt laid it out, and letting others make the unconscious connection in positioning.

Hey John. Nice to hear from you again.

Further to this, as far as playlists go, I have never really noticed from whom a playlist has originated, so I don't really agree with you on the "shouting" angle. Also, the act of creating a list, has never really been about marketing or endorsements. It has mainly been the focus for personal use on Youtube. Youtube does encourage channel owners to make lists, it does not say whose videos you should have in that list.

To me, what has worked is the quality, or perhaps more so - the legitimacy of that playlist. Just my experience and I have worked this quite well with a pretty active cooking channel of mine.

Creating a second account not only helps with positioning, as John pointed out, but it could add an element of "social ranking" and help get videos ranked a little higher in the Youtube search engine.

It may also help your videos appear in the "related" videos column on the right, which can be one of the major ways of getting traffic to your videos.

Let me also say, this isn't a concept that will make you wealthy overnight. It is simply a good, solid strategy to add to your Youtube arsenal.

        Hi Claude,

No, it's not in Video Thunder...but I did send it to those that signed up for Video Thunder email list that bought it.

        To All,

Playlists are another legit way to use other folks' Youtube videos, in addition to Creative Commons videos and embedding videos on your own pages.

Another use of playlists is to find the most popular videos on a topic and add your own commentary videos where you give your opinions on the videos. If you don't have an idea for content, create videos about other videos.

And/or add 5-10 second "ads" in between the videos on the playlist. The "ads" can be as simple as a 5-10 second slide reminding people to visit your channel along with some type of branding element.

Branding is really an under-used concept on the Net. People are much more inclined to trust someone they've seen before. Adding your brand in as many places as possible is a good thing. If people see your "ads" then come across your channel and videos, they'll say to themselves, "I know this guy/gal".
