What are some items that you know are overpriced?

I'm thinking of getting into starting an online store and am thinking about items with good margins. Hope to get a few ideas here and hopefully the responses shall help not only me but perhaps you as well.

Came across the following link when researching online. Some items here may seem out of one's reach as an e-retailer, but they've been done before and quite successfully so for some of them:

20 of the World

Looking forward to more high margin product ideas

Thanks in advance!

This probably won't help you, but I remember reading about 10 years ago that movie theatre popcorn is the most overpriced item on the planet...even more than diamonds!

Movie theatres buy 20 pound bags of corn kernels for a few bucks and sell a medium sized popcorn for $7. One 20 pound bag can make A LOT of medium popcorns!

I think the most over priced commodity is the tiny bottles of ink for printers
      They've got a captive market.

Breakfast cereals are also very overpriced. My understanding
is that the packaging of the most popular brands of cereals are
more expensive than the contents. The major companies
simply decide to price high and consumers buy. Hence, why
I make my own cereal--granola from oatmeal.

I think Apple stuff is reasonably priced. All of their products are high end and you definitely get what you pay for!

Everything that has an Apple logo is over priced.. and you are def not getting what you pay for.. that is just their marketing brilliance..
.... Making you believe they invented new stuff where they also just copied long time existing products and gave it a good marketing spin and a design update.

You can say that again TheEliteWarrior, It shows that there is a way to make all designer stuff " a bit" cheaper, but i learnt that going cheaper would not be fit purpose.

Overpriced and high margins aren't the same thing.

Pricing is all relative to the target market. Jeans for $500 might be overpriced to a market used to paying $100 for jeans, but is reasonable for someone who normally pays $500+ for every pair.

Margins are just math (sometimes complex accounting-style math, but for here just basic math), and not subjected to what any person thinks about the selling price.

The highest margin industries are usually going to be the service industries.

Here are some products that I know have incredibly high margins:

Printer Ink, Perfume, Makeup, Bottled Water, Coffee, Tea, Wine (almost all beverages really), and Furniture (more along the lines of custom, not big-box).

Of course here in this market space are informational products. I sell (not IM/MMO niche) an ebook for $50 and an ebook/video upsell for $90, the margins on those are obviously through the roof.

      Overpriced where? And how?

In Internet Marketing, dishonesty often proves to be overpriced.

In the auction market, the highest bid is always overpriced.

In life, most professionals are overpriced, especially the mid-level managers in large-scale enterprises.

In the tangible world, money is overpriced too heavily - we often pay with a lot of our lives for money.

I can think of a few more overpriced items, but the above should be good to get started.

I looked into printer ink and the problem for selling that thru e-commerce is it's compatibility to other printers. Quite a hard sell for unbranded printer ink's.

    Water in the desert.

Also, hearing aids. You're lucky to get away with paying $4,000 for a good pair, and they're supposed to be replaced every five years... bah.
