Hi guys. Is it essential to have a nice design for your landing page? How critical is that?

I wouldn't say it is critical..

I much prefer to have some cool graphics.. but I do remember reading about a test done by one marketer where the page with no graphics out-performed the one with graphics..

I suppose it is niche dependent?...

    Peace

If you're selling web design services, it's critical. Otherwise, the content is much more important. Of course you don't want it to look amateurish either.

I would imagine that the design you put forth would be your best effort. As long as the content of the page clearly presents what you want to get across and is done with integrity, in my experience, people are quite forgiving.

So, if this is your first attempt, be encouraged because as you step out and try your hand at it your actions will become a platform for improvement.

The main thing is not to be afraid to try. As long as you do your best job every time you will be fine.

    Cheers

I never rely on tests done by anyone else other than myself for my business. However, I do use other marketers test results as starting points, but I always run my own tests.

PS. Graphics are overrated for a lot of markets and like someone already mentioned, what I consider good graphics and what you might consider good graphics probably differ quite a bit. I have seen a lot of posts were everyone is raving about how good the graphics are and when I visit the website it's a bunch of crap!

    Cool graphics? Maybe.

    Nice design? Essential.

What I mean is that graphics and design are not the same thing. Good design is having things laid out on the page in a reasonable and easy-to-read manner.

Here's an over the top example of what poor design could be:

A tiny font that's hard to read. Lots of fonts. Lots of colors and sizes. And a sign up form that's spit into to pieces...say...having the name field at the very top right of the page and the e-mail field hidden in the middle of a block of text.

I'm not saying the design has to be fancy - that can be just as confusing.

So, graphics, may not matter, but good design does.

    All the best,
    Michael
