Anyone Know of Any Decent Cloud Online Storage Companys?

Hi, l have been using Dropbox, but you need to allocate Laptop memory for it, (it doesn't store it off your PC) and paying for 100gigs a month, while my Laptop only has about 50 gigs left is impractical.

I tried Amazon, great l thought initially, but l found out recently, if you download something to it, and give your customer the link, they have to sign in, or create an account for the download. Arrrrrrgggggg!


So, l was hoping that someone here could recommend a company like Amazon, (cheap storage, that doesn't use your PC memory) and allows direct downloads, not any irritating optin or other annoying hoop to get to the download!


I am happy to pay for it, but was hoping to try it out for starters!

    Hey, I use Amazon and have not heard of this, my customer gets the download link and then downloads fine.

    What do you mean they have to sign in, do you mean they have to sign into amazon?? :confused:

      Yep, l just checked it, if l sign in, and go to a download link it downloads perfectly, but if l sign out of my account, or the Laptop is turned off, etc, my customers then get this crap...

      Then they click on Go To My Account... and have to sign in or create an account to get it!

      I have tried this on another computer not attached to my main host, and it did the same thing, brought up this stuff instead of just downloading!


      Like you l thought that Amazon was great, and l was happy to cough up, when the time came, but after my customers started complaining about this extra hoop, and my own tests, l am quickly starting to go off them!

      I would recommend logging out, (refresh the links page) and try your Amazon link s, then log in, and try them again, (refresh the page again) you should notice this issue when logged off, unless it is just my Laptop?


      So, unless l have my computer on 24/7 it seems that Amazon is only good for personal use of sharing files between business contacts!

      Arrrr, probably not! The one l use gives you 5 gigs for free, and obviously stuffs people around!

      Can you give me some details on the one you use, sounds like an expensive one, or l would have to cough up for other services to get it?

    is mega.co.nz any use to you? I haven't looked into myself, but I believe they give away 50 GB on a free account.

    Okay yea because AWS does not have that issue you outline above, thats why I was a little confused.

    Easy to sign up and is not expensive due to the fact your only charged for what you use (pay as you go)

    I could write a very long post on this but they explain it all AWS offers fast, low-cost cloud application development & deployment

    A couple of different ways of accessing the content on Amazon S3 but coming from a non-geek, low-techie I can attest to Cloudberry being user friendly and THE EASY way to access the files in Amazon.

    Yes Cloudberry is good, if you use Firefox a great add-on is S3Fox. This is what I use, once installed it's really easy to upload files organise and generally manage S3.

    Hey Mike - I had a really difficult time with S3Firefox plugin - maybe it wasn't compatible with another of my addons? Anyway, Cloudberry was a good fix for me.

      Hey, I do not use Firefox except for a select number of activities such as S3 management. The add-on has never been an issue for me but FireFox in general can be temperamental IMO

      Cloudberry is something I may start using more, thanks

    You do not have to use dropbox on your computer. The only reason to do so is for file syncing. You only have to install it if you want the files to be available across all your devices when any changes happen.

    You can just use the web interface for dropbox and drag and drop what you want to store on there. It is what I do.

    You're probably not using Amazon S3 properly. Amazon S3 is super easy to implement and has unreal download speeds that nearly no providers can beat.

        Yep, l don't want to lose the drop a file onto dropbox Laptop and it appears on my PC, part. Much easier than messing around with memory sticks, and the additional crap that occampyings it when installing on a PC with XP.

        And emails, same dog, different fleas!

        And Dropbox is expensive as well, $10 a month for 100 gigs!


        So, l will probably look into other options!

        Thank's for the help, l looked into MEGA, and eventhough impressive, l am concerned about the encryption key thing. I don't want to have to give my customers an access key, so they can download!

        Not much better than Amazon cloud storage! :rolleyes:

        Looked into AWS, phew, a lot to take in, but l have a handle on it now!


        Hmmm, unless someone can let me know that MEGA, doens't have any encryption nonsence, for customer downloads, it look like AWS might be the best option.

        Mike l have looked into their pricing, etc, and was wondering how they compare, in regards to Dropbox prices?

        Dropbox is $10 a month for 100gig, which includes downloads speeds, and volumes, etc.

        AWS, is a bit tricker to figure out, could you please give me, and us, an example of difference in monthly costs, between Dropbox and AWS, (disregard the free 5 gig part).

        I suspect AWS will be cheaper, but am just curious!

          Yep, just tried Amazon again, with the shared function, thinking that might fix it?

          It did bring up another window so anyone could download, but it is still clunky!

          It should just download, not go to a separate page, so the customer has to click on another button to download!

          Does AWS have this problem, or can the customer just click on a link and download straight away?

    AWS is great once your file is stored and your download link is in place its a simple click and download setup. I use it alongside S3 Flowshield in my members area this is another plugin that protects download links from being shared.
