Best WordPress Plugin to Build Email List

I have a pretty popular blog--and want to build an email list. Site is on WordPress, so would make sense to add a WP plugin to gather the list and display my offer (which is to get something free if you sign up for the list).

What's the best one to use with WordPress?

Optimize press is pretty good. You can create conversion optimized Squeeze Pages, Sales Letters, launch pages & more.

What I think I'm looking for is a plugin that will add a popup to certain users who haven't come back recently or a footer/header bar where I can ask users to subscribe.

Have you taken a look at MemberMouse? It will do everything you're looking for and probably a lot more. If you have a good amount of traffic, you'll see a lot of benefits from using a more advanced plugin.

It sounds like you're describing a 'content locker' plugin but most of the ones I've seen are for facebook 'likes' or CPA offers.

If you want to set up an actual email sign box like you see on Retiring to the Philippines Online Expat Magazine then you can use the free MailChimp widget at WordPress › MailChimp Widget « WordPress Plugins

The other neat thing you can do is sign up for a free MailChimp account and collect up to 2k emails. They'll handle the newsletter emails and do a nice RSS to email feed that works great.

You'd need a paid account to actually send emails or a self-hosted solution.

    Hope that helps

Popup Dominations is excellent for optin forms. If you don't mine changing your theme, consider Affilo Theme by Mark Ling, easy to use and many optin options and features.

I use something called "hellobar" it leaves an optin bar just above the header. Works quite well.

    Kind regards

Also OptinSkin is useful for a capture box at the end of each blog post.

Frankly, I don't think there is a "best one", as you see with each reply comes a different answer.. So, I suggest you just test things out, see which one you like best.

    Hi B,

I LOVED Hello Bar for a neat little bar at the top, that's a nice starting point. I didn't want to give up branding though and simply had my developer add a neat little bar at the top, custom made, to my Paradise theme. Doing so was better for my branding and hey, that top bar converts really nicely because it shows up on mobile as well as desktops and laptops quite well.

I'd add that pop ups can work well, but really, your content is the ultimate list builder. If people love what you're serving up, and if it's meaty, you'll have few problems building a list through any type of opt in form.

    Onward and upward!

    Signing off from Bali.
