What would you sell to teenage girls?

Hi Warriors,

I had a earlier post about monetizing my forum, and had some good suggestions. This question is a little different.

The bulk of visitors to my site are teenage girls (15-19). Meaning most need to use a parents credit card.

I'm looking for ideas as to what I can sell on my site (real products or virtual, affiliate or direct) that would

a) appeal to that demographic,
b) that they don't mind showing a parent to use their credit card and
c) that is cheap enough since they don't have a lot of disposable cash.

Obviously the MMO space will not work per (a) above. I'm looking for some creative ideas...all opinions welcome!

Jewelry and cosmetics. And don't assume "girls" in that age range are using their parents' credit cards. I'd bet more than half of them have their own plastic.

iPhone cases, hair accessories, animal hoodies (just trust me on this one), lip gloss, NAIL POLISH (big one right now), cosmetics in general. I have seen more teenage girls shopping more high-end cosmetics than ever before. Bows are in - hair bows, rings with bows, etc.

Acne medications and skin/hair care product.

Acne meds came to mind because Proactive was one
of the best selling brands out there the last time
that I checked, they did have an affiliate program,
and it's a consumable... meaning the girls would set
up a monthly shipment, and you'd earn commission
on each customer for a LONG time... or at least
until she outgrew the acne :-)

  Self image, self worth, self confidence type products and information can be surprisingly popular.
  
  If the information is packaged right, you would be surprised at the number of young people who would spend money on these.
  
  You may have heard that teenagers don't buy ebooks. Wrong!

I would recommend reading popular magazines among teenagers. Not just for the ads (because they can provide some great clues) but for figuring out their lifestyle and how they see the world. See what they like to buy, for what they might be considered cool, and try to appeal to them with your product recommendations.

People at this age are all about "trying to fit in", and that means looking out for the latest whatever they are into, or probably finding ways to avoid flaws they might think they'll make others pick on them, such as acne (as pointed above), looking slim, etc.

Better yet, try to hang out with a few of these teenagers for a few days to get a better feel of how they think, if you can. You'll probably learn more about what you can successfully market to them this way.

No seriously, the best way to go about this is not to ask a bunch of internet marketers what they would do (although it's extremely valuable to have their input), IMHO the best way is to camp out at your local mall and offer $5 for filling out a survey of the things that 15-19 year old girls are interested in. Just make sure that you do it in a way that appears professional and doesn't make you look creepy. Lol.

^Surveys are woefully ineffective at getting useable information. People either lie on them blatantly or they say they will purchase things that they will never purchase when the time comes.

Again, I appreciate all the different ideas and opinions here. Always great to get input from Warriors. There are couple of ideas here I never thought off.

I have the traffic and stickiness on my site, and with 95% of the visitors being US/UK, if I can find the right product to push it could work well.

  SPLIT INTO TWO demographics. 15-17. 17-19 the twain will never meet. At 18-19 they are in college or out working.

Clothes. And I mean different lines. There are different groups of girls and they all have a different style of dress. Preppy, Gothic, hip-hop, etc. The one constant product I would have is jeans. All groups tend to wear them.

I would still try and drill down further into your demographics. What are these teenage girls visiting your site for? What other sites or search terms are they coming from to get to your site?

CPA offers are also a good way to monetize a teenage demographic. Email submits to win free makeup trials, iphones, playstations, etc.

Why not change it to an eCommerce to sell clothes and ladies cosmetics? and yes, talking about justin beiber really gonna pull your website back.

Anything related to fashion, and beauty products go well too. Teenagers are all about the latest trend, so exploit that to the fullest.

They are also crazy about bands and musicians. You could maybe sell some albums and merchandise?

Who knows, they might even be interesting in dating and love related stuff. Try out a few things to see which one makes you the most money, and stick to it.
