Will a popup on my review site damage my Google Ranking?

Hi,

I've been setting up some HTML to go in the WP Lapdance popup plugin today. I really pleased with it and have tested it out on a test site using different browsers with no problems.

I want to put this popup on an affiliate product review site that I have, but I am worried that the use of the popup might affect my ranking on Google. I've heard that Google doesn't like popups.

I am currently on the first page and have been well positioned for a long time. Most of my traffic comes from Google search.

Although I'm proud of the popup and want to use it, if it is a risk to my Google ranking, I'll just have to settle for a sign up form at the top of the right hand column of the page.

Does anyone have any experience of using popups on Google ranked sites?

Thanks

Phil

  • Phil,

While there is evidence that Google hates popups, it doesn’t mean they penalize sites that use them. While they are annoying they remain an effective advertising strategy and as long as you aren’t deceiving users, I would think Google is fine with that.
This is pretty much just my opinion but based on what I’ve seen, I think your ranking will be fine. For example I am an avid reader on search engine land and marketing land, both sites that use popups. Despite the fact that they do that, their URLs continue to show up very high when searching for content related to what they produce.

    Best,

      Hey Phil,

I have used popups in the past on my sites that rank #1 on big G and have never seen a negative effect from it.

Remember, Google's goal is to "end search." It's true that they don't like pop-ups, but they don't penalize them either. If your pop-up doesn't repel visitors from your site to a point where they hit the back button, you should be good. If they visitors continue to stay on your site for the same period of time, if not longer, then you should be in a great position.

          Thanks for your replies.

I am very encouraged to hear that.

I spent a lot of time working on the graphical sign up box displayed within the WP Lapdance popup so I'm relieved to know I should be OK if I use it.

I have to set up my autoresponder sequence now to go with the popup but once that's done I'll install the popup on my site. I'll keep an eye on the stats and my position in Google just in case.

The popup just offers a free report related to the product I am reviewing. It only appears on exit so I'm hoping to catch visitors that would otherwise disappear into cyberspace! The autoresponder sequence will then give them useful info and occasionally refer them back to my site.

I'm hoping to improve the number of sales I get from this site.

          Cheers for your help

          Phil
