video or written content?

I have been dabbling in screen capture tutorialing for my site and am finding that it is much easier, much more informative, easier to communicate the message, easier to create and much more fun. Besides the lack of SEO benefits of videos posted on the site instead of searchable text, can you think of any other cons using this form of content? Or pros for that matter?

I always do both. I would write an article then have a video for those who doesnt like to read. If you do this both you will rank your page faster in Serps. Plus videos are really good specially youtube since google owns it so you can rank pretty quickly. Contents are great for those who loves reading.

I'll third this sentiment. People like absorbing their information differently.

I personally don't like watching videos because you can't really scan it and have to watch it through to absorb the info. Maybe that seems like an opportunity for better engagement, but it feels like a commitment to me and I'm more likely to click away.

Also, I spend a lot of time in foreign countries, often with poor infrastructure, and don't always have a good enough internet connection to make watching every video I want to a realistic option. This has taught me that sticking solely with video can alienate your visitors who are on a slow machine or connection.

I always appreciate when marketers take the pains to offer both, and to me it seems like a wise decision on their part as well.

This makes sense and I hadn't considered that angle. Thanks.

If you put the videos up on youtube, and set them up correctly, you'll most likely get the video ranked higher than your website.

I use both as well! I write an blog post an make a video for it. That gives me two pieces of content with ones. When you fell good with creating videos then stick to it. You also can built a strong Youtube Channel with daily videos and as soon as your channel gets more and more popular you can redirect your traffic to your blog.

If you ask me video is the perfect marketing tool and it will even get more popular in the next years!

My intention is to make the videos part of a menbership site so if I put it on youtube it defeats the purpose of the paid tutorials. How do you handle private videos for members only?

I would do both. If you had asked me 2 years ago, I would have preferred a video, but now I prefer to read a written article.

  • Whether it's a free or paid program, I think it's always better to do both. Maybe create a transcript or module to support your videos to give more value to your paid training.

Right now I just write articles but I want to start converting my articles into video soon.

It's time consuming but it is worth it in the long run.

The only problem that I see with using videos, is that people usually just click play, and then surf other websites, while listening to the video.

That's fine, maybe they can click a few of my ads while they're at it

This is true for music videos. I do this all the time. I find a live concert and put it on play and then go to work.
But it is not true for most other videos IMHO.

Definitely both forms. I write articles and blog away frequently but have always used video's in my marketing.

According to experts though, video marketing will dominate everything in the not to distant future!

I'm going to be really blunt so please don't be offended. I won't watch video unless I know who made it. The reason is because so much of it just plain sucks. Another reason I won't watch it is, if that's the only presentation the vendor is offering I feel s/he isn't smart enough to know to have video and text. And if they aren't smart enough to know that, then the probably don't know much about anything else either. Of course, there are exceptions. But don't take my word for it. See for yourself:

Thanks for the link and I agree. I would rather skim and back track if I don't understand then try to sift through a video but I get its utility and popularity. I see a combination of both in my future.

There are pros for both forms of communication.

It's always a good idea to alternate between the 2 in order to keep your audience engaged & interested.

If my post is pretty darn long, i may pop a video in between my post just to try & break things up.

(Make sure your videos are of a high quality & entertaining, though or you'll lose your audience!)

    I would do both.

Make sure that you give great value and content in both mediums.

The posts should be long and informative, well over 1k words per article.

I would definitely use both, make sure your vidoes are highly relevant. Also it's a good idea to add a nice image or few with relevant keyword as an ALT tag.

    The answer's simple really.

Think about the average human on the planet.

Are they more prone to read, or to watch video?

(What's more popular... YouTube or the Library?)

    Food for thought
