Wordpress Theme Clone Prevention Plugin

Hi there

I wonder does anyone know if such a thing exists?

A wordpress theme Guard Plugin that prevents theme cloning once a site is sold? Such a plugin would prevent a theme being re-used on flipped domains "other" than the one it was sold on?

Many thanks
David

I doubt there is such a plugin, as it would be somewhat ineffective. If it can be viewed in a browser, a good coder can reproduce it!

Much better to rely on the protection of copyright. The details vary depending on where you live, but generally copyright law gives redress to those whose rights have been infringed.

That wouldn't actually work because if the site was sold the buyer would simply disable/delete the plugin and then do whatever he wants with the theme.

I do not think anyone would want this because we need to backup our wordpress sites just incase of hacks or another issue.

There are "no right click" plugins to protect images and text. The Only way I can see this is using a license key in the template that would be unique to the server the template is installed on. so if the template left the server and was used on a complete different server you would have to generate a whole new key. You would have to check around for good license key system!

Yeah, this is an uphill struggle. Forget about the fact that Wordpress is opensource and that virtually all the code, plugin and theme, is completely visible and can easily be rewritten by an 'enterprising' individual.

Think about turning a negative into a positive. How about something like a "Powered by Super-Mega-Tech Corp"? Something that brands your product or service. That way, if the site is flipped, they're advertising for you.

Of course, that same 'enterprising' individual can remove your "Powered by ..." code. Think about what's happening with Getty Images these days. They're giving up on trying to chase down people using their images without permission. Instead, you can embed them so they can advertise on your site..

    Thanks for the replies guys...

I guessed there may not be such a plugin, such a shame...

My Angle was going to be this..

Produce a stunning looking site, take a lot of time on the visual appearance. Add branded logos and badges relating to the domain name, then add about 20 pages of unique content. My theory was that people may be interested in a top class unique look, not the re-hashed duplicate sites that many people keep re-selling. I am trying to think of ways to prevent such sites from being cloned and re-sold... so far I am thinking that branding the domain name into the design is the way to go, via badges and mentioning the "domain name" in the text.

I was hoping there was a way to lock my sites so that they could only be used on the .com they were sold on. I think that if anyone came up with such a plugin it would make them a fortune, anyhow many thanks for the replies.

    Kind regards David

This product srcProtector for PHP looks as if it might accomplish what you want to do.
I cannot say if, or how well, it works, but you may evaluate it for yourself.
