My Email List "Horror-Turned-Inspiration" Story

Let me preface this by saying: I am very much new to Internet Marketing. I do not have a HUGE list or dozens of products and WSO's to my name. I am striving to get there, but for now I am simply feeling my way through this industry like so many others.

A few hours ago I had a very interesting incident occur with a subscriber of my email list, and I thought that perhaps it could provide some inspiration and a bit of humor for all my Warrior brothers and sisters!

I sent out a broadcast to my list today about a new resell rights product that launched, and would be of benefit to my subscribers. In this broadcast I of course included my affiliate link, and mentioned how this NEW service would be really useful for people to be a part of.

A few minutes after queuing the broadcast with Aweber, I get a email reply from one of my subscribers replying to the actual broadcast email.

His response basically stated that I was a (Censored for content) "B---S--- Marketer" and that I was over hyping a course that has already been out for 3 years and saying it is new.

What had actually happened here is that the website I was promoting had been registered (the domain) for 3 years. But the actual PRODUCT had launched literally hours ago. This subscriber had done a whois on the domain and felt that I was somehow lying about the entire promotion.

He promptly un-subscribed from my list, leaving additional nasty comments in the "why are you leaving" box Aweber has.

At this point, I had 2 options... Be like many other (but not all!) marketers and simply laugh it off... Or I could respond to this person and explain why their perception of me and my promotion was completely off base.

So that is what I did. I wrote to this gentleman and explained that while the domain for this product may indeed be 3 years old, the product itself is infact brand new! Furthermore, I let him know that I did not appreciate being called a BS'er, and that my principles keep me from being a scandalous marketer who lies nonstop to readers.

Within a few minutes, low and behold, he responded. Stating that he was very impressed by the personalized response at 1 in the morning, and admitting that perhaps he jumped the gun about assuming that I was fabricating this entire promotion.

I then further explained to him that I am also very offended when marketers play the hype game to sucker people into buying products they themselves have never even seen or believe in their effectiveness.

To make a long story short, within about 5-6 e-mail replies, not only had this person *ReSubscribed* to my list. They also apologized profusely for being so rude and presumptuous regarding my intentions.

We ended up not only burying the hatchet, but we somehow ended up chatting for another 45 minutes about some popular computer games we both happened to play! He ended our conversation by saying that (Censored):
"I'm an a--hole and You're a pretty righteous f---ing dude. I dig your style"

He also made mention that he will write me again soon to see what other product recommendations I have, since he wants to start building Niche blogs, which is what I specialize in.

Obviously the point of me sharing all this is to let you all know, whether you have an email list of tens of thousands, or one of just a hundred or so (like myself), each and every one of those people has something to offer to you and vice versa.

Taking the time to interact with them personally when they write to you could end up yielding you greater rewards than you may think!

Please, PLEASE do not allow yourself to become one of those "holier than thou" marketers who sits behind a wall of anonymity also known as an autoresponder with a "donotreply" address.

Take your own reputation into your hands. You may be very pleased with the end results of your efforts!

I hope you have enjoyed hearing about my little list drama, and would love to hear about any situations YOU have encountered that may be similar!

Thanks!
-Tyler

Glad you found some value in this example!

You are absolutely right, customer retention and service are qualities that many online marketers sorely lack, in my opinion.

Of course this is not always the case, but certainly in many instances.

We all need to learn how to more effectively maintain and uphold our own reputations and images to potential clients/buyers!
