How do you get access to a client's website and email list?

Let's say you wanted to start an email copywriting and conversion optimization agency.

How would you normally gain access to a client's website?

I guess I could just wing it and ask for login details, but was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this and could offer any advice?

    Ask for access, of course.
    If they are your client, they are supposed to trust you and give you the access you need to get the job done.

    When i was in the SEO business, i would have a page after the payment process that explained what information would be required to complete the on-site optimization service, in which the client can then provide the login details for all accounts required or you can give the client the option to have any changes sent in a zip file to their web developer or the client to make the changes in-house.

    Usually, most people i dealt with did not have the skills or the inhouse web developer to make the required changes, so i was provided all login details for 99% of clients.

    Definitely ask for it. That's the only way to actually get their logins. You do need their permission to do it, after all
