email list incentives

Is it necessary to promise something (ebook, video, etc.) to get email signups or will having some unique content on site and promise of more entice people?

    Also I noticed that a chimp mail email went directly into the promotions filter of gmail. I guess this is better than spam, but I can't imagine anyone checks that? Maybe they do, FB and similar notifications go there. Is the promotions folder equated to spam?

    Get a proper autoresponder before you start list building. Free autoresponders are a big mistake if you are serious.
