New Here, need help (please be gentle)

Alright, I just joined this forum today. I havn't been in to that many forums, but I want to stick to this one.

I originally wanted to freelance making websites for people, so I learned some css, xhtml, javascript, some php... You know, the simple stuff. I've decided I want to try at my own website. I've had some in the past just for fun, but never really monotized them. I've read a large amount about different types of marketing, and using SEO in different ways. My thought is turned to article marketing, but the more I read, the less I'm liking it. I know everything has its ups and downs, but I could really use some help being pointed in the right direction. I'm honestly willing to devote time to it... A lot of time. So, thanks in advance to anyone who replies. I would love to know what people think.

PS: If I've said something not too bright, please don't rip me a new one.

Guide or guideline to what? There is tons of free advice and guidelines on this forum and in the War Room...start reading

The only problem I see is that you are looking at doing things before you are experienced with them.

Selling sites to others without knowing how to (or whether you can) monetize them or set them up for maximum profit means selling sites cheap.

Freelance writing is good for those who love to write - but not so good unless you know keyword usage, LSI, can write well and have an interest in writing for hours at a time.

You are focusing on "service business" items but perhaps you should learn (and do) more about monetizing sites, SEO, content creation, etc to find your own strengths and areas of interest.

You'll do better in the long run if you take the time now to learn what interests you in IM - what niche you like to work in - and where your strengths lie. Then focus in that niche or area going forward.

(I'm not suggesting buying a ton of make money products or WSOs or anything else - just read about the various money making methods that can be used and choosing one that suits you best). You can research the topics that interest you with the "search" function on this forum and using google as well.

Well Kay King, I've read about different ways.

When I'm writing articles, I can be a pretty dang good writer. The lack of knowledge is in which keywords to go after. My nich I want to go for is going to be related to music.

I recently wrote an article on a word searched on google about 2,400 times a month (according to their tool) with a medium to high competition and it's slowly rising in googles ranks. I'm not sure if that's good or not.

I am pretty interested in clickbank products. I've found a few I'd like to promote, but I'm just not the greatest salesman yet.

But I really am liking article marketing... But I don't know how big to make my site, how many products to promote on one site, or how much info I should have on it compared to the products. It's little questions like that... or they may be big..

      Thanks very much Kay.

PS: To everyone whos posted, this forum seems extremely nice and helpful. Once I can get on my feet, I hope to help the people that get stuck where I'm at right now one day.

Well, I did article marketing successfully in the past. Here is how I worked:

    1. Build opt-in pages
I never managed to make money sending people directly to review sites or landing pages. However, I made some decent money building lists. So my first advice is: send people to squeeze pages, offer them a gift (e.g. report, autoresponder series, video, etc), capture their email and market to them on a long-term basis.

    2. Keyword research
Don't bet on traffic from article directories. If you want article marketing to work for you make sure that you get good spots on Google. If you can, buy a good software for keyword research (Keyword Elite 2.0 or Market Samurai) and do a lot of keyword research in order to find terms that you can rank for.

    3. Backlinks
Just finding good keywords is not enough, you also need backlinks. I used to create link wheels using Blogger, Hub pages, Squidoo lenses and smaller article directories, but there are other ways to do it. Regardless the system that you use, don't skip this step!!

    I hope it helps.

Do the opt-in pages really help that much William? When ever I get sent to an opt in page when I want something, I always would just rather go to a landing page...

And I'm getting links from Ezinearticles. I am making my articles targeted at keywords as well... I'm just not sure if they're going to do great (just started with this, I'm giving it time).

They are what worked for me with article marketing. I'm pretty sure that other guys have different experiences, but for me it was much easier to build lists and then promote offers with autoresponder series.

Of course, I reocmmend you to test different approaches and find out what performs well for you.

I wasn't sure what catagory this one would be in... but I know I need self improvement.

And I'm glad about the opt in thing... I really hate that...

Also, that was the motto I was going to go for... I won't ever failure, just figure out a thousand ways not to do it.

    Insane to have something free?
No way! VERY often, the best available resources are indeed free.
You just have to search for them, or be guided to them by others.

Do not waste your time doing SEO. Search engines are always changing their algorithms.

Unless you like writing stay away from writing articles for traffic. the same goes for pretty much every method such as video marketing social marketing PPC.

Find something that you enjoy doing and stick with that.

If you enjoyed writing and I highly recommend setting up a blog here on the forum as well as posting articles to ezinearticles. Link all of your stuff back to your own blog which will go more in depth on that particular topic. set up a Weber account so that you can set up a opt in form on your blog. So basically naturally share your stuff with your friends on Facebook as well as anywhere else or connect online in traffic will come as your following gross no matter what topic you are in.

The things you learn are along the way no guru can teach you. Do not be afraid to find your own path the key is to reflect upon the path that you have created it not trying to steal someone else's path but modifying your own based on the others proven principles.

But remember first you have to have your own path. So go out there and find out what doesn't work for you because anything can work for someone but not everything can work for you.

opt in forms really annoy me though... Like, if I go to a website and it gives me an opt in form, I almost immidiately leave.
