Learning vs. Practice

The best way to learn is through practice. You can watch someone drive a car your whole life, but until you actually get time behind the wheel you won't really know what to do.

Get some feel for when doing stuff. Get your hands dirty. When you hit a wall, then go and get some education.

Learn as much as you can on your own trial and error. But when you really need help then read.

Great advice! Actually doing something as you learn how to do it is probably the only effective way to learn. Sure, you can read a lot before doing, but you're not moving ahead, just marching in place.

Great Post IM Pro! You have to take action. You must get in the trenches and go to work. You are going to make mistakes. You are not going to do everything perfect the first time around. If you persist you will succeed.

I agree about diving in. I spent most of my career in traditional marketing, which means getting everything perfect before implementing. You can't call Newsweek and ask them to tear out your client's ad because there's a typo. So different with Internet Marketing. Still learning to move on ideas faster rather than thinking endlessly about all the things that could go wrong. It's very freeing. Thanks for the post!

    Good post IM Pro.

You earn by applying what you learn, and learning comes from doing. Doing doesn't mean waiting to act. Act now and you receive the proper tools at the time you need them.

This is why those with street smarts sometimes become wildly wealthy while those with book smarts often remain poor. One moves into action immediately while the other guy stands on the sidelines.

Along with learning through practice is this principle:
There are three things you must have in order to accomplish anything (like fixing your car, for instance, for a tangible example of this universal principle):
    1. The Desire to have it working again.
    2. The Owner's Manual, the instructions for how to fix it.
    3. The TOOLS.
That third necessity is quite often the one, simple hinderance to people realizing their dreams. All the motivation and know-how in the world (while necessary) will not get the job done if you don't have a wrench.

Now Will Smith (the actor) may not pop into you head when you're talking about wise people but he said something that definitely resonated with me...

He said you only need two things in life:

      Running
      Reading

Here are some other saying that I like:

-- Fall down 7 times, but get up 8
-- "Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs" - Henry Ford
-- "80% of success is showing up" - Woody Allen
-- "Many a false step has been made by standing still" - Fortune Cookie

Well yes knowledge is indeed power but only when you apply it other wise it will remain potential and of no use.

First, it really depends what you are doing. Learning by practice is good for some things like swinging a golf club. Its hard to actually get the right swing down unless you are sitting there with a club in your hand practicing. However other things like flying a fighter pilot are better learned first and then practiced well after advanced learning has taken place, as obviously you dont want to jump into a fighter jet without being extremely proficient at knowing (the learning process) how to fly a jet...a mistake can be catastrophic.

Clearly my examples are extremes to make a point but I think the underlying principle I was getting at should be clear.

Secondly, different people learn in different ways, so this is another thing to consider.

Now when it comes to things like most internet marketing endeavors, I think its a godo idea to learn by practicing. I say this because I have seen many people fail due to inaction, so creating a habit from the start to practice and take action is extremely important.

Further, this stuff isnt rocket science. There are many many people smarter than I am on here but I make much more money online just because I work hard and take a ton of action. The goal of your IM business is probably to make money, and unused intellect and knowledge sitting and incubating in your brain wont make you money...taking action will make you money.

Of course one needs to find that "right" balance between learning and practicing, but I think practicing should be more heavily favored for most people in the IM field at least.

Theory is important. In this industry, if you don't know what you're doing chances are that you will lose lot's of time and money and get frustrated very fast.

However, overthinking things is a big mistake as well. Experience is the best teacher, so once you know enough to get started you must get started. Just buying product after product won't make you money, it's necessary to take action and implement at least one method in order to see how things work in the practice.

With internet marketing in particular, this is a malady that afflicts too many people - they just want to learn and know everything about it, but put very little of it into practice at all. Internet marketing is not the kind of endeavor that you can get perfect on your first try, no matter how much you learn and study.

In this regard, it is very similar to learning to ride a bicycle. You can read about how to balance yourself on the bike, when to take your feet off the ground, how to position your body, and learn a bewildering array of facts regarding how to ride properly, but chances are very high that you'll fall off the bike anyway on your first few tries. I feel that becoming successful in internet marketing is just like learning to ride a bicycle. You can learn everything possible about it, but you'll really only be able to learn how to do it properly by applying your knowledge and putting it into practice!

I learned a great lesson from Michael Masterson from Early To Rise website ..

His father once told him :

"If you want to be a writer, you have to write"

This is very true indeed and applicable to all parts of our life. This is how we can become what we want to become .. you have to do it.

If you want to be a singer, you have to sing

If you want to be basketball player, you have to play and shooting the hoop

If you want to be an Internet Marketer, you have to market and sell something on the Internet !

Don't get trapped with continuous learning ... this was my mistake in the past ... learning without action

One tip to share with warriors here :

Set aside a specific time every day or every week for learning purpose.. Other than that time, you have to do what you are supposed to do - sell or market something on the Internet...
