So I was on Roy Naim | Facebook (in case anyone wants to friend me there, just make sure to send a message telling me who you are) and a friend posted this small talk by the great Jim Rohn.

I've heard this talk many times before and today, just listening to the man makes me smile and think. Makes me say "He is right and I must push further".

So I want to share with you what I just heard and for a little exercise for myself, a bit of a journal entry, I transcribed this few minutes talk for you (and me):

And here are the written words:

Walk Away

Here’s what I am asking you to do. Walk away from the 97%.

Don’t use their vocabulary. Don’t use their excuses. Don’t use their method of gripe and neglect and won’t even walk around the block for their health. Won’t even eat an apple a day. Won’t even take their time to refine their philosophy for a better life.

WALK AWAYYYYY and join the 3%.

Guess how many people can retire from the income of their own personal resources when it comes time to retire. ANSWER: 5%.

In America, 5% of the people are independent. 95% are dependent. Take charge of your own retirement you can multiply it at least by 5. Let the government take care of it, some company take care of it, you got to divide by 5.

I am asking you to take charge of your own retirement. Take charge of your own life. It happens to be one of the title of my own cassette program called “Take Charge Of Your Own Life”. That’s what we talked about here all morning.

Take charge of your own DAYYY. Don’t have days like most people have you will wind up broke and poor.

Pennies, no treasures.

Trinkets, no value.

Change it all.

It starts as simple as an apple a day. It starts as simple as the first book in your new library. It starts as simple as the first journal that you get and make the first entry that when people sit will say this is the beginning of the study of a serious student. They're going to be healthy, they're going to be powerful, they're going to be rich, they're going to have it all.

Look they committed themselves to a whole new journey. I am asking you to do that.

But what’s easy to do is what? Easy not to do. But walk away from the 90%. Walk away from the 97%. From the 95%.

Don’t go where they go. Don’t do what they do. Don’t talk like they talk. Develop you a whole new language. Be part of the few.

Guess when I went and got this little book, The Richest Man in Babylon? Guess when I went and got it. The SAMEEEE day I heard about it. I went and got it.

So somebody says “Well, Mr. Rohn does that make you different than most of everybody else?

The answer is “YESSSS”.

Somebody says “why is that?”:

We don’t know!!!!

What do we know. You don’t know. I don’t know, nobody knows.

All we know is, some get the sparks and says “I’m gonna change my life. I’m gonna change my health. I’m gonna change my relationships with my family and I’m gonna change everything.” And if it starts with an apple, if starts with a walk around the block, if it starts with a book, with a journal, whatever it is, I am a candidate. I am ready to go and change my life and I invite you on that journey. And once you look back on it, you will never turn back. You will never go back to the old ways and the old language and the old neglects. Never.

Caridovascular alone in America creates over a 1000 funerals a day. And 70% of it is, neglect. I am asking you not to hope that they are going to fix this out here next year so you’ll be healthier. I am asking you to pick up some new discipline so you will be healthier.

Drive yourself to do it. Book by book. Entry by entry.

It’s all available for you.

  • Brilliant and inspiring post. Thank you for sharing it with us. It holds very important concepts indeed One thing I would like to add however is that as we develop we should not be comparing ourselves to others, but rather to previous versions of ourselves. We have to remember that there will always be people who are better or worse at certain things than we are, and it's foolish to compare ourselves to other people who walk different paths

      You welcome !

And yes, Jim Rohn is a good man and says it as he sees it. He has the experience and the results to be able to talk the talk.

And yes, I have those words now on my wall as a reminder to WALK AWAY Love how he just says it.

      You welcome as well!

There my friend, you hit it hard (sounds so wrong LOL).

Comparing. So EVIL. Listening to parents compare a child to another. Saying "but your brother is an honor student".

"But Mark Zukerberg created Facebook, why couldn't you?"

And so on. (Though the Mark's question, can be powerful as in "you know you do have a potential").

But point is, it can also be a downfall. I remember when I try to compare myself to my own future self and I became sad. I expected to be a (whatever here) and I am not...so it is over....See how bad comparing can be?

Of course, look how far I gotten...now that's powerful.

Point is, if you are ever going to compare, let it be a REAL and FAIR comparison. If you want to compare to another person, remember what he took for them to get there, the time, the effort and so on.

And just have fun. And oh...WALK AWAY!

Great post, roynaim! You definitely have to take charge of your own life. Don't let others or society dictate it for you. Take charge and shape your own future.

I have been following this my whole life, learned it from my father. He was always a free man, never working and making money for anyone but himself. I'm glad (and LUCKY!) I have this knowledge.

    Brilliant video. Bravo.

That is AMAZING that you listen to that tape once a week. Darren Hardy talks about how he has over 1000's hours of direct coaching from Jim Rohn via his audios/DVDs and I bet you can say close to it as well. I listen often to Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn and a few others. They bring a smile to my face and remind me on that power that is within me.

Greg, as so many say along these lines "if you don't know what you want, if you don't decide what you are going to be, someone else is going to do it for you and that is just lame.

And dude, that is GREAT that you can learn it from your father a person who lives by example and show his son how to be the same. That is truly GREAT. Not many can say it, nor can we blame the past generation but for those who have those role models, revere them and learn from their every step.

          Amen brother.

Looking forward to you creating some magic too!

And yes, as a friend said to me just yesterday, that the brain needs working out and we should walk on the path of those who already achieved greatness and learn from them.

And the most important is to HEAR and to DO.

He was listening to Zig Ziglar on sales a few days ago, and Zig was explaining the Price vs. Cost concept (another thread).

And in it the line goes something like this: (this is in regards to music education):

You know Mr/Mrs....many years ago our music school made a very tough decision...we could have charged much less for lessons but have lesser quality teachers or we could charge a little more and have the finest teachers in the city who will guarantee your child success and I bet your happy we made that decision, aren't you?

          He closed them.

He just heard this from Zig that morning, he wasn't sure about the line because he felt it was cheesy but he did it anyway and closed them. BAM.

          That is HEARING and APPLYING.

But I am lucky enough to learn from him with what he left behind.

    Great post, one question:

When you walk away from the 95%, how do you sell products? That's the sticking point for me. If you create a divide between you and other people and don't 'go where they go' and 'speak their language', how can you feel close enough to them to provide a service/item/whatever without feeling that divide? Do you then concentrate on the other 5% instead? Honest questions.

You bring out a good point. But perhaps if part of that 95% finds you (that is if they want to break out of that 95% and if they really do, they will find you, without you even looking for them!) and your determination and faith rubs onto them... eventually they will join you along with the rest of the 5%... and perhaps a domino effect will be seen.. so the 95% would become 90%, and the successful 5% would end up growing to 10%, and so on... it is a case where they will have to find you if they really want it... and they will, if they want it!

I think the 97% Jim Rohn is talking are the people who don't want to be their own bosses, or take extraordinary measures to grow their income, but still need your products and services.

So, if you want to be the one who reaps the rewards, you have to step away and make them your customers. Hey, somebody has to do it, so it might as well be you.

That's a good point, about the domino effect. We've seen it happen, in fact, because we've seen a domino effect in the reverse direction. From the pioneer spirit and the people who showed up on American shores with /nothing/ to build themselves a life to the people who are trapped in this sense of learned helplessness and dependency. If it can go towards the negative it can go towards the positive--there's plenty to go around!

As others have mentioned, the walking away is not about not understanding them. Just the opposite. By walking away from them, you DO understand them and can help them out. You know what they are thinking, their fears, emotions and you, the new leader, can show them the way.

WALK AWAYYYY and become a new leader. The one who can help many others walk away as well.

That said, I do understand the question, at its deepest point.

At one point in my life, among my friends I was chosen to lead a very important project, and this happened many times, that I was chosen to step up and I did (which I am grateful for because it taught me SO much).

During my first leadership position with that organization, I felt important. My ego was soaring. And then it came down....that day I did something that put down my friends, my friends who supported me, who were happy for me. One of them came over to me and explained the situation and told me I can do better....

And better I did do. Ever since then, the volunteers, my friends, loved me because I related to them, I was one of them and yet, I was in a leadership position.

Walking away doesn't mean to be egotistical and forget the people, it means lead them and be their friends and show them how to be different.

Right on as I said above. They want you to lead. They want you to show them the way. For a long time I thought, how can I be different than them when I am like them, I am no better...but I am and I can show them how to join me...we are all better.

Thank you for calling me a genius

And ya, sharing is fun. It is important.

And here's the thing, I learn a lot more from sharing because I know have multiple ears through all the people who hear from me and give me feedback.

Here's another Jim Rohn's article about sharing:
