Is is more important for you to be respected or liked?

As internet marketers, it would seem like gaining respect and building trust is truly more important than being liked. But as I think more about this, it is also very important to be liked and have fun. Social Networks have become very popular and I think they are more based on people liking each other.

This is a very tough question and I would like to see your thoughts.

If I had to choose one... I'd probably pick respect. Respect seems deeper and will go a long ways. You could like somebody today and hate them tomorrow.

I feel you have to have one to have the other, and I'd say respect absolutely has to come first.

I feel that there shouldn't be a choice, all of them are important. If people respect you but don't like you, they won't buy from you. If people like you and don't respect you, they won't take you seriously...they won't buy from you. They are both equally important and to ask to choose between the two is not realistic.

What is the purpose of this question, by the way? LOL

Just Curious... I was having this discussion with someone earlier and I was wondering what other people thought.

I feel they are both important too and it seems like if you are respected... you will automatically be liked? On the other hand... I like everybody, but that doesn't mean I respect everything about them.

    Hi,

Yeah - I think it is a balance of getting them to Know, Like and Trust you. The "know" and "trust" part are effectively 'respect'. But in order to motivate them to purchase from you, all 3 points need to be there in everything that you do. In all your communications, those 3 things should be part of your objective. Really though, if your heart is in the right place and you are doing what you can to HELP others...it will show and you will be able to achieve the KLT factor without even really trying to, specifically.

Very True... it's pretty simple to establish Know, Like and Trust in person. Actions speak louder than words. But as far as Internet Marketing goes... it takes some time to build respect and find people that you will eventually KLT and they will KLT you back.

I think you should have both.

Many people tell me that I am quite likable and I think that's a huge reason that my business has been successful.

But you have to make it so that you aren't just liked, you have to be respected.

If I went around and started telling you to sign up to every single scam in the world, but I was "liked". I don't see that as the same thing.

I try my hardest to give back beneficial information, not just information that's going to make me money. And in doing so, people tend to respect me more.

If marketers would stop be money hogs, I think they would have a better shot Because I do not respect many of the huge guru's out there that always have the "next big thing" that's going to make everyone "millionaires".

Here's the thing though--different people like and respect different things. So at the end of the day I think you pretty much have to focus on being YOU.

For example, I respect and like people who shoot straight, who do it calmly, without hype. I get turned off by outrageous claims and giant numbers. I like things that are step-by-step. I don't like things that seem underhanded or impersonal, or which are too automated.

But I'm not everyone's customer! There are people who want, like, and trust the exact opposite. They want to see you thinking big. They want every tool they can get at their disposal.

I guess that's why branding is so important--it's not just about distinguishing yourself or helping people see your USP, it's about who you are and who will resonate with you--with your product, service, style or whatever. When you connect with people who believe in the same things you believe in, when you start finding those people, the rest follows.

I do like your thought : ) I always believed that you are who you think you are... if you think you are respected and liked, then you probably are.

But in marketing... there are plenty of people who talk the big talk and walk the walk and they want you to believe they are successful, respected and liked, but that doesn't neccessarily mean they are.

The thing is though... I Like people with high hopes and dreams and I think I would rather work with somebody that had an attidude like that than somebody who was negative or complains and whines all the time. I like the spirit in somebody that is positive and with that spirit they will probably do better and gain more of my respect.

For me respecting someone and liking them rather go hand in hand. While I can respect someone for who they are and what they have accomplished, I may not know them well enough to know whether I like them personally or not.

But, for me to like someone, I have to also respect them. No respect - no like!

Some people don't like you for unclear reasons not because you did anything wrong e.g. someone might not like your nose or your face so don't focus on liking but respect is earned when you deliver results. They don't like you but respect you

Respect. If you've ever had a manager or reported to someone, who would you work the hardest for?: the one you respected or liked?

You don't have to like someone in order to respect them. You can respect someone's beliefs, what they stand for, their work ethic and how they treat others....yet not want to be their buddy.

I think you're right on... "The Law of Attraction" you are what you believe. I truly feel that if you look at people who are well liked and respected around you... they will tell you without any doubt, that they are a well liked and/or respected person in their business, in their church, in their community, in their family...etc and if they believe that... they usually are.

Ever heard someone say: "i'm not going there today, I don't think they like me or I can't talk to that group, i'm too nervous, or I wish I had the respect that the multi-million dollar earner in my upline has? When you begin to believe in yourself instead of having doubt about yourself... a whole new YOU will emerge.

Respect is more important to me.

I have worked with many people over the years and respected them but I didn't like them. That's on a business level. They were able to create successful business using honest, ethical techniques (respect) but were heartless business owners (why I didn't like them).

    Hi!

You can be respected without being liked. Meaning, others can recognize that you know what you are talking about, have some expertise, and are willing to basically accept what you say as 'truth' or accurate. So for business purposes - it is much more important to be respected.

There are people that are liked because of their nature of helpfulness and giving - but in business, this can attract the 'freebie-seekers'! And while that may be okay within moderation, that will certainly not help your bottom line. So, strictly speaking from an online business point of view, it is not as lucrative to be only liked!

    Good question though!

    It's kinda' tricky question....

I somewhat co-relate being respected and being liked. I think if someone likes you then he/she also respects you, but if someone respects you it doesn't necessarily means that he/she likes you.

In terms of business, I think you should have both. To gain more clients/customers, they should like your product/service for them to keep on coming back. And together with that, they also respects you because they believe and patronize your services/products offered.

You're partly right but, it's all depends on you on what business matters you are into. If you are working to gather likes to a certain page and have it paid afterwards then, respect is not earn or prioritize. But to certain point, you have that proper or the right thing to do when building a business brand.
