My boy can swim like a shark, identify the local poisonous snakes
and is aware of the alligator danger.

So its time to take him camping. I'm so excited for him.
Ten days unplugged from the world.
I am bringing him to Hontoon Island State Park.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hontoon_Island_State_Park

Just him, me and nature. ( and not to far away from civilization if he
hates it or things go completely wrong )

It is his spring break starting on the 20th and he had a fantastic school year.
He deserves this.

On the other hand, I cant wait to teach him how to make a fire and kayak
and, and, and ....

        Ken -

Are those the owls that sound like a person screaming? I remember those from my own childhood and they were frightening until I knew what was making the noise...then I thought it was funny.

My Grandfather said the owls were like a bunch of old women shouting at each other because they were all hard of hearing....

I've camped with my sons for as long as six weeks and we never ran out of things to do. Time moves differently when you are camping....

That's why you spend half your life in the OTF: trying vainly to be funny, and cheese-balling your way through threads with zero humour and limited (word used very sparingly) knowledge.

You're not in a position to lecture ANYONE about decorum and morals. And don't presume to jump on a post that wasn't even aimed at you, with your "holier than thou" attitude.

You come on a 'benign ' Thread started by a man and his story about his young son. And you try to get a 'dig' ( and yes it was a 'dig') aimed at him based on past diatribe in other Threads where you went after him and his Military background. Just trying to stir up crap.

              You've started this, not me.

As for the other thread, I recall I said that lives lost, globally, was more important that "flag" patriotism. Ken then jumped on the thread with his, "I was an ex-serviceman and spilled my DNA for my country". Yeah. He also made insulting remarks towards me . . despite the fact I hadn't even addressed him in my post. Bit like you're doing now really.

Funny how my earlier post in this thread gets taken off, yet you can gob off calling people trolls and get away with it. It's either you're doing a damn good job "running with the herd", they're feeling sorry for you, or ugly use of the English language coupled with ignorance is the in thing now on forum chill out zones.

Be lucky. You'll need it that's for sure.

Added: My earlier post was taken off. I wouldn't even know how to delete one completely.

I think you'll both have a blast and I don't think your son will tire of the great outdoors, unless he gets homesick.

When I was a kid, I always looked forward to our camping trips and the time just flew by. We never ran out of things to do with just exploring nature night and day. That was excluding our planned activities of visiting the local tourist spots.

I would have been happy just exploring and playing in the woods and water.

Uh....my dad taught me to shoot when I was that age.

Ken - not sure if 10 days might not be a little long in such a small space. If you ever get a hankering to bring him out here West where we actually have open land 10 days can sometimes be not near enough.

I never had my own kids but I've helped introduce several to the wilds and to rockhounding and I had a blast. There's a 13 yr old boy out near Portland who thinks of me as the fairy god mother of rockhounding. I got to teach him all sorts of little stuff out there that you really don't think about until you're right there (His daddy is a city boy, too - so I was on a two fer on that one). I had a better time than either of them, I think.

Sounds like a nice bonding time Ken. I just discovered last summer how much I love canoeing. Perfect way to spend quality time with someone. I live along side a very powerful river, whereby we can canoe for about 7 miles right off of our dock without any damms or danger... You definitely want to scope out the territory first ( I know you know this). LOVE, LOVE, LOVE being on the river!

Sounds like a great father and son time!

Sounds like a great time. Don't forget the sun screen and bug spray. My husband went camping last year and got his second tick of the season. The meds used to be real cheap ($4.00) to prevent Lyme, but somehow were now in "short" supply and went up to almost a hundred bucks. That was twice last year.

I haven't been tent or rustic cabin camping since I was around 11 or 12. That was tons of great fun and camp fire. Now when someone says camping, I think big camper with kitchen, shower, bed, air, etc. on wheels with a motor. If only we could get one of those, I'd go camping again in a minute.

Oh, and a retractable awning, skeeter net and chairs and white and pink curtains and .... -- don't listen to a thing I want, you and your son go and have a wonderful time so maybe you can go back again later.

10 days might be to much. Only one way to find out.

If he is anything like me it wont be. I get him outside into the
state parks (off the trails) as often as possible. I have brought him to
Hontoon Island a few times by car, this time were taking the boat
so if he gets bored we can just mosey on down the river to
find a new place for him to explore.

My biggest concern is the owls - seriously - we have barred owls
were we live and they are very loud at night. He is scared silly by them.

Meaning if he is to scared at night to enjoy himself, it might be a short
trip. I hope not. Last year I brought him to the zoo just so he
could see the owls and maybe get over being scared ...
unfortunately, that did not work. He liked them well enough at the zoo
but it did not translate over when they started hollering at night.

Well, he is likely big enough that if he respects the owls, they won't touch him. Outside of protecting their young, and getting food, they likely have no reason to hurt anything. Of course, if your child were a baby, or some such, you would have reason to worry.

How old is he Ken? Being out where he's exposed to the owls while Dad is there to say "it's just an owl talking to his friends" should get him over it if he's young. If he has an episode over it, have him sit in the tent or by the campfire - the owls won't go near a fire, that might make him feel safe until he loses his fear.

Sorry to hear your trip got squashed. I can relate. I always got sick at inopportune times as a kid.

The owls - just teach him about how important they are in their ecosystems and he'll get over it. Hope you get another shot at getting out with him soon.

Poor kid. It just seems when they are pretty young, they tend to get ill all of a sudden. Is he any better now?

Beautiful pics of the owls. We got owls here, too. Perhaps we should learn to keep a camera close by to catch some pics.

And, ^&%$, the coyotes are back again and so far only spotted about 3 miles away, now with little ones. Between the owls and coyotes (etc. hawks, & more etc.) I was hoping one of them would nab the dirty pottying rabbit living in our neighbor's yard. It keeps coming over to my driveway to use as his potty.
