A space elevator? A tower where you can go into space without blasting off....

Wild Inflatable Space Elevator Idea Could Lift People 12 Miles Up

To me "inflatable" always brings up the potential of "deflatable" but maybe this could work?

Count me out of going up and away in that thing. I just get visions of utter disaster just thinking about it.

No way, for me. Far too much real potential for disaster.

Wow i won't be on that lift. I am scared in a lift on 16 floor. This is just too much. 12 miles up, i won't be alive after that

In the 70's, I was afraid to wear platform shoes. :-(

The tallest building in my city is 28 floors it sways half a meter, about one foot, when there are heavy winds and its made out of armored concrete. Imagine the sway on top of a 20km tower!!! Now imagine landing on something that basically sways left and right. Hats off to whoever designed it I am not sure though about things like structural integrity and functionality.

I think I'll pass on the space elevator...yikes! I'm with Suzanne and April - that's just a disaster waiting to happen.

I'll stick to skiing when I'm feeling the need for a high altitude thrill. 12,000 feet is good enough for me!

Another instance where science fiction looks set to become science fact. As any sci-fi geek will tell you, it's an old idea. Interesting article, nonetheless. Me, I almost passed out traveling up the CN Tower, so I'll pass on being an astronaut when I grow up; not that there's much danger of either happening, of course.

    Cheers - Tom

No way. I can climb a mountain but can't do ledges of any kind. Put me on the list of people who think that this thing is an accident waiting to happen. It is, though, something for astronauts and not just general public. What happens to everyone under a 12 mile ladder if it decides to fall, though?
