What a great idea...

"The Library of Things is a new service from the Sacramento Public Library that offers things for checkout--such as sewing machines, musical instruments and video games. The items in the Library of Things were chosen in a voting process by Sacramento Public Library patrons and funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant administered through the California State Library."

Wow, wonder if their is a deposit required in case something gets broken or comes back with missing parts. Unlike books, they just deteriorate over time.

Sir, we are writing to inform you, that Lamborghini you borrowed 5 years ago is long overdue and there will be a 50 dollar fine.

That's what I was thinking. Pretty expensive library to upkeep if things start not being returned. Sac is getting brave for the amount of petty criminals they have there.

Okay, how about a community-minded initiative?

In the UK, libraries have been lending video games, DVDs and CDs for quite some time. But I like the idea of expanding into other areas.

Most of us buy and hoard too much stuff anyway, and things like musical instruments and craft items would be ideal to lend out. It would encourage people to take up new interests and develop their creative skills - just what a public service library should be doing.

That is cool generosity in action.

I do not want a sewin' machine, I got no use for a sewin' machine, but it is reassurin' to know that if ever I split my pants, an' I needed to fix 'em real fast, I could jus' drop into my library an' re-stitch my ravaged seams.

Gotta presume they got robes you can hire for modesty's sake while you are stitchin' or these hallowed readin' rooms gonna be despoiled by nekkid gals fixin' up their apparel.

If they got tire inflators for hire, gonna be a real fight for space between guys with outta kilter Jeeps an' mebbe teens makin' their own shoes, cos hey — anyone got that kinda equipment at home?

So, yeah, Fearo, figure we gotta trust people to look after the stuff or libraries gonna be consumed by the momentarily industrious.

Weird thing is, I am inspired right now to rip open a paira pants an' stitch 'em back up again, jus' to show communal pluck — only I don't have a sewin' machine.

    But, yeah: cool initiative.

Well meaning, but sadly this has little chance of lasting very long.

Getting a sewing machine adjusted and working right is a nontrivial task.

They'll be lending door stops (ie non functioning lumps of stuff) within a year.
