This is the new safety ad by the UK government launched to combat an alarming rise in serious and fatal car crashes from kids texting and driving. All rather alarming but hopefully has an effect.

I think they should run this here in the states too, Rich. It is becoming a big cause of crashes here. Just 3 weeks ago 2 teens were killed about 15 miles from my home and the report stated that texting was the cause. One was 16 and the other was 17. Their lives were just getting started.

They just made texting while driving a secondary offense here in NY, WTF.
In other words they can't pull you over for it, but can give you a ticket for it if they pull you over for something else.
I know Dave gets a better view of things from his truck then I do from my bike, but the things I see car drivers doing while driving makes me wish shooting idiots wasn't illegal.

Teens aren't the only ones out of control when it comes to texting, cell phones, and driving. I've almost been hit as a pedestrian and while driving. As far as I'm concerned if people behind the wheel don't have more sense than this, they should not have driver's licenses. They need to just yank licenses when people can't figure it out for themselves.

It's that way here in Va too Thom.
This just happened yesterday.
My wife and I were going home from doing some shopping,and we hit a stop light.
We looked over and the driver of the car next too us was furiously texting.
As she pulled ahead of us, we both noticed the plates on the car said "Governemt Official Use Only"
So, while it is possible she was on official business, I think it highly unlikely.
I also was amazed that she was breaking the law in a government car.

Yes, texting has gotten out of control. I think this video sends a great message to everyone, not just teens. I did have my 14 year old watch it as she is approaching the days for her learners permit and she texts over 25000 messages a month!!! She has a great head on her shoulders as she is getting "under the influence" started in her school this year -- her first year of high school!!! When she watched this video she was like "mom, that is very sad ... I will not text while I am driving... I promise".

It is one powerful video... every driver should me mandated to watch it!!!

Perhaps people can get some common sense.There is NO NEED to text while driving other than careless lack of concern for others and yourselves safety.

Such a device exists. If I remember correctly, a school wanted to use it. But then they figured that jamming phones wouldn't be a good idea in an emergency. (That and I think it was probably against the law.)

Aside from that -- I totally agree that people should not be texting while they're driving. Way too dangerous. Like Kim said, seems like common sense... but "common" isn't all that common.

p.s. And just a personal pet peeve -- I get irritated when people text during a family dinner. I am sure everyone would gasp in horror if I brought a book to the table and started reading during the Thanksgiving dinner. But apparently texting is ok (in some circles). Sheesh.

So why would anyone need a portable phone again?

Walking, shopping, roadside emergencies, buses, bars, and anywhere else that random audible conversation would not be considered rude.

I've personally never understood the objection to their use in restaurants, except as a vague dislike of people who accept being kept on a leash. I couldn't care a great deal less if someone is texting during a movie. If I notice that, the odds are good the movie isn't that good to begin with. Talking on the things there, though...

  Yeah. For me atleast. Conversation is conversation, so unless i'm in a monestary in the hills, i'm going to hear people talking. But there's no need to yell or even loud talk on your cell phone unless you dont mind me getting in on the conversation.

I seem to recall a few years ago that restaurants,cinemas, theatres etc., were able to get a device that blocked all in- and out-bound calls to mobile phones. Land lines weren't affected.

Sure there are some places that it wouldnt be good for,but really, wouldn't it be nice to be able to go to a nice place to eat and not have to listen to the phone conversations to the tables to the left and the right of you?
Wouldn't it be nice to go to a movie and not hear the phone calls and/or see the glow of the devices as people text during the show? (again, how rude!)
Reality dictates the yes, the devices already exists,but mostly in military hands I would guess.

I personally believe that anyone caught texting while driving should be treated exactly the same way as someone driving while drunk. Same points on the license, same penalties, the whole shot. And remove their right to carry a cellphone - any kind - for the duration.

Anyone recall the cause of that train wreck in LA last year? Killed 25, injured 135, and caused over $10 million dollars in damage.

I've already been hit twice by idiots talking on cellphones held to their heads while driving in rush hour traffic. One was a tap, but the other was almost serious. I can't imagine how anyone can believe they're competent to drive safely while texting on the bloody things.

Yep and wimpy NY made it a secondary offense so you can't get pulled over for it, just a ticket if you get stopped for something else.
I've been in more then a couple close calls on my motorcycle with people on cell phones.
If I'm at a stop light and the driver of the car next to me is on the phone, I do tell them it's illegal and dangerous.

Kinda funny in a way but when NY made talking on a cell and driving illegal the exceptions where police and emergency personnel.
One day I was getting gas in town when the light turned red, the first car stopped and the town cop talking on his cell while driving hit it.

In the UK it is illegal to use a mobile while driving. It has been a fineable offence for a number of years but the government changed the law last year so you now get fined and 3 points on your license (get 12 and you get at least a years ban). There's been a study recently that even people using hands free mobiles while driving is still dangerous as peoples concentration goes on their conversation for a split second rather than the road.

My conversations last minutes cause I hate to be on the phone in public. If my hubby calls me at the grocery store it's "Hey get milk" and then I'm off. I find it extremely rude of people to continue chatting while checking out at the store and ignoring the cashier. If I checkout I tell the person I have to call them back. As for talking on the phone while driving, I pull off if it's that important of a call that I need to take.

No Michael, I did not say never use any device, but I do feel that there is a responsibility to use it taking other people into consideration.

I don't go to the movies that often, too expensive nowadays, but when I do go I don't want to be nudged in the side by the jerk texting his friends or even tweeting out a movie review as we watch it.

Where I live, they've started putting bumps in the middle of the road so stuff like this doesn't happen. You would hear your car veering into the middle of the road. Texting and driving is stupid, but until the police can actually find a way to enforce the laws properly, then what they're doing here is better than nothing.

All cell signals dont need to be blocked. The point of me having a mobile phone is to be able to be contacted while im mobile.

not texting is something that can only be changed by common sense, and we're running a little low on that in this country at the moment.

lol..there's just as much reason for a teenager to have a cellphone while driving as there is for an adult to have a cellphone while driving. It's not the cellphone's fault, its the driver's fault, and its not EVERY driver's fauilt, just the stupid ones. Why should everyone be punished because some retards cant figure out that typing and driving dont mix.

Jeez - again it's NOT about you. If you don't want to have it, don't buy it. That STILL does not mean that it wouldn't be a huge seller. And no there's absolutely no reason for a teenager to need a cellphone while driving.

Or maybe we could have a "cell phone" lane. Kind of like the express lane, for people like yourself that "need" their cell phone to drive with. We could just call it the Darwin lane or something

I can't think of any particular reason why a teenager (or anyone for that matter) needs to use a cell/mobile phone whilst they are driving. If it's an emergency, then pull up for a few minutes.

Or if they do need to make or recieve calls whilst driving then they should pull up and make them or use a completely hands free device

I work between 3 hospitals and I'm often on the road between the three so invariably end up getting calls about patients and problems etc. If I answer them I use a bluetooth device in my car. I'd never dream of making a call though whilst driving, it's too distracting.

Well, lets go ahead and answer this question you asked earlier:

The answer is, no one NEEDS a portable phone. Its a luxury. Amazingly enough, the world got by for many many years without every Tom Dick and Harry having a portable cell phone.
Now I admit there are times they come in handy, If I was driving down teh road and came upon an accident, the ability to summon help could very well save lives.
But are they a necessity? Not by a long shot.
PS: Neither is the ability to text.

Thats not a need, it's a convenience.
A GPS also helps guide one one to the property,but again, its not a need but a convenience. I'm actually surprised what people consider a need nowadays.

And no, I don't NEED my cell phone, but I keep it because its a convenience for me.I use it to check on my wife and kids and my mother. I use it to see if I need to pick something up for my wife when I'm out to save the expense of driving two cars to the same location. I use it to be able to be reached in case of emergencies and due to health problems, my drs and health professionals have my cell number. But absolutely none of those qualify as a NEED.

By the way, have you heard more about the house from the other day yet?

Yeah, originally they called and told us that we were second on the house, well the first guy's financing fell through so last night they called and said its ours if we wanted it. I went back and looked at it again, mulled a few things over as far as what i thought it needed for repairs/upgrades plus it didnt have a garage, which is a big deal to me. I told them I'd pass on the house. It needs just a little work, but i might end up being in the house longer than I plan, and if so, i'd really like a garage. I'd rather pass on a deal that is ok than get wrapped up in something i just flat dont like. But 5 more came in this morning, so i'm on the hunt again tonight.

As someone who has worked in the Accident & Emergency department and seen the results come in of folks texting etc on their phones whilst driving, I'd be pleased to see a years automatic driving ban for those who are caught.

BTW it's not just teenagers, you would be surprised at how many older adults do it as well

You're right Kim its not just kids texting and driving. I watched one of those police reality programs we have a lot of on UK TV. In a recent episode their was a businesman pulled over for driving 85mph while texting in the fast lane of the m25! They issued him with a summons to court for dangerous driving. Apparently he was late for a meeting! As the cop said - better late than never arriving!

Anyway, that's my take. It could be said that I'm not a big fan of mobiles!

I dont think kids should have a regular cellphone, but there are some cellphones, one called a Bug, that can only call numbers that are programmed into it via computer. My ex-gf had one for her 11 year old. The phone could only call or accept calls from preprogrammed numbers, like mom/dad/grandma..etc. It doesnt text, it doesnt have a camera, i think those kinds of phones are great for kids

I agree with this. I know AT&T Wireless and Verizon have phones, I think they're called FireFlys, like the one you're talking about. Hah, if you give one of these to a teenager then maybe it would embarrass them too much to pull out in front of their friends because they look like toys. I even saw one once that looked a bit like Shrek.

Happy slapping is just something that happens in the U.K.

It would get you shot in the states, or atleast seriously beat down. But cameras are fueling the 'sexting' thats going on over here amongst teens
