Childrens computers/laptops...

I want to buy my 5 year old grandson a laptop for Christmas, but I want something that is bright and colorful, simplistic in design and also fairly rugged.

I've been browsing like mad, but I can't find anything remotely like I'm looking for. All I get are those stupid vtech type things with imbecile type games on them.

Does anything like this actually exist, or has no one thought to "invent" em yet

Be grateful for some ideas

    Kim,

You'd be surprised how well your grandson may take care of it once he realizes it's his. My girls were always extra careful cause they knew if it broke - too bad, so sad.

I've been seeing these little Dell Mini-netbooks thought I'd throw that out there. Not as big and heavy as a regular size laptop and will probably would great with little hands.

Dell Mini Netbooks: Colorful, Small, Light Weight

    Good luck!

Teresa_C MIGHT be right. I had a reputation for breaking things, but I actually FIXED things! Some things just wore out, etc... STILL, I got a typewriter around 13, and sold it, STILL WORKING, around 30! I got a computer in 1980 and, to the best of my knowledge, it STILL works.

FORGET VTECH! I used to SELL Vtech when they had NICE products and WEREN'T a household name. Today, the kid stuff is built to be cutesy and simplistic.

As for RUGGED, ruggedized laptops don't look all that nice, and can be expensive, though they DO exist.

PERSONALLY, unless he is MATURE, I would get him a DESKTOP that he would use where all the parts likely to break are safe and breaks can EASILY be fixed. Around say 9 you could maybe get him a nice laptop. The netbooks ARE cheap and good, but FAR from rugged. Even THERE though, you could maybe splurge for one with an SSD drive. THEY are more rugged!
