How Do I Get Rid Of This Malware?

I'm running Vista and I have some kind of fake anti-virus malware on my computer, somehow.

It keeps popping up in the bottom of the screen telling me I have a virus, etc.

I ran Malware bytes and it said it deleted 17 infected files and restarted my computer and everything was fine, however, 4 hours later and it just popped up again.

What to do?

I word type the exact wording in the popup into Google Pat, you should find some matches on forums and virus software sites.

you have probably got the 'windows antivirus 20- virus. It started around the end of 08, mutated in 09 to a handful of variants then has musted again in 10. Go to malwarebytes.org and pull their free software, seems to work pretty well most of the time.

Yeah, I already ran MalwareBytes and it deleted it initially.

However, a few hours later it came back.

The thread that Gordon referenced had some great advice in there. I'm going to try a few different things and see what happens.

      Viruses are SO annoying!

But did you run it specifically the way I said? There is a difference , especially the part about turning off the built in windows recovery? Because if you don't turn that off, you are backing up the virus.

Just to update you. I got rid of this thing by following Kim's advice to the letter.

Once gone I used MarkAndrews IMCopywriting's advice and let experts look at what I still had to make darned sure the infection had been taken care of.

So as Kim has repeated---follow ALL ADVICE to the letter. This advice is learned through experience and is what you need to do.

Then as I said---if you have any idea where this damnable thing came from just don't go back!! Hah! Hah!
