Who has any predictions on this NFL season?

Don't think I'm wagering on this season...too many last minute trades ...although I think that Pittsburgh will surprise some people this year.

So I'll probably just have to take the ribbin' if I lose.
Better than losing money, I guess:p

I'm in a "pick 'em" league so I picked the games every week. It's not fantasy football, you just pick the winner of each game each week. Then you assign points, 1-16 to each game. Give the game your most confident of your pick a 16, least confident pick gets a 1, and the rest are somewhere in between as you see fit. Good fun.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Sooo, is that the Vikings@16 for the season?

      Or too early to tell?....

To early to tell for a lot of teams, actually. With the lockout wiping out mini-camps and the OTA's, new coaches didn't have near as much time to install their systems and rookies didn't have as much time to adjust.

I play 'em one week at a time. Are you a Vikings fan? I did give that game the 16 points this week ... but I picked the Chargers. lol, sorry about that.

For some reason I thought you were.

          I agree with your assessment...

Game of the weekend is Pitt and Baltimore.

          I'll take the Steelers.

Nope, I'm green and gold through and through.

The Ravens/Steelers game I thought was the hardest pick this week. I took the Ravens only because they're the home team, but I only put one point on it -- no confidence in that pick at all! lol

Aaah well... don't pay any attention to my brain farts.

It is one of the hardest picks...I'm of the 'club' that believe three points is given for home team. Safety net for books, opinion of course, but not just mine.

It is close, but the points have dropped (for Pitts) a little, only by half point (mostly). Edit: 1&1/2 now...

I like this (Pittsburgh) team and it's a close game...it is what makes it fun.

Don't know whether I like chewin on the remote control in the fourth or not...:p

I think these will be the teams that are improved and may surpise some:

Houston Texans - They should be healthy and getting Wade Phillips as DC their D should be instantly improved. Plus, the Colts losing Manning for any period of time only helps the Texans.

My Denver Broncos - I don't think they are a playoff team, but they will improve on their 4-12 record of last year. Rookie Von Miller, the second player drafted this past year looks like the real deal. This kid is QUICK off the line. We also get Elvis Dumervil back who missed all of last year and he looks better than ever. Elvis lead the NFL in sacks the year before, but with him out the Broncos were last in sacks last year. With Dumervil and Miller, the Broncos should have 20 more sacks this year than last, which should mean some more wins. Remember "Doom and Gloom". Plus, our first string out-played every other first string in the preseason by a big margin...But our scrubs got killed. If we stay healthy we can compete...If we lose many starters, it will be another long season.

Redskins - They're in a tough division, but I'm a Shanahan fan and it looks like they've upgraded their D-line a lot in the offseason. And having another camp for Shanny to install his run game, plus getting RB Hightower, looks like reasons to be postive.

I think the Raiders will take a step or two back. They lost gallery and Zach Miller, and although they replaced Miller with Boss from the NYG, I think Miller is a much better player. And Da Raidahs have looked plain awful in the preseason.

I also don't think the Chiefs will repeat their 10-6 record of last year and will take a step backwards. They have the first place schedule this year and won't surprise anyone.

The Bungles will lead the "Suck for Luck" race and finish with the worst record in the NFL, dooming Andrew Luck to be condemned playing for the Bungles.

Hey Jim...I don't think the Steelers will surprise anyone...They are my favorite to make it to the Superbowl and have been 2 out of the last 3 years.

The odds have San Dog, Philly and Green Bay ahead of Pittsburgh to win the Superbowl. (Also New England,(@#1) which is a given as far as odds go)

I completely agree on Denver getting better and the Raiders getting worse.
The other teams you mention I haven't paid much attention to.

I give you a lot of credit for not trying to say The Broncos are ready for the playoffs.

How could I forget that the Raiduhs also lost Nnamdi Asomugha too? His loss is a big reason the Raiduhs couldn't stop anyone in preseason.

Of course I'll be watching Denver go all the way this year. lol. I have hope for a better season, maybe even a play-off appearance now that we aren't in a total rebuilding stage again this season.

Division-wide I'll also be keeping my eye on San Diego. In a perfect world the Bolt's will put on a good show EARLY in the season, but I wouldn't put my money on that.

The biggest question I have is where do the Jets sit in the AFC this year? They come "oh so close" but never get to the big one. They also have an emotionally charged game Sunday night in prime-time so you better believe they are going to put it all on the line against Dallas. How they fall after that is anybody's guess.

I would like to see Shanahan turn things around in Washington, and if he can establish the run they could be a force to be reckoned with this year.

Can't wait for the season to start!

      I hope you're right...

I saw on the news today that Peyton went to Europe for some type of stem cell treatment not allowed in the US. Doesn't seem like your "average" (whatever that is) injury.

Regardless...best QB in the NFL. On and off the field!!!!

Peyton's injury actually is pretty 'average' for normal folks. I had the same cervical disc / fusion surgery he did in my neck half a dozen years ago. It's never been the same since. I, of course, lack the superior specialists and rehab (or his above average health);; so hope his turns out better. Does a real job on the mobility factor tho. Will love to hear if the stem cell treatment proves to be a big plus.....
While I do wish him well 'health wise'.....it is at least a chance for us Texans to have a shot at the division for once!

You mean OUR Green Bay Packers, right Gary?

      This wouldn't surprise me:

      Green Bay
      Detroit
      Chicago
      Minnesota

Of course, health is usually a factor, and Stafford hasn't show he can stay healthy for a full season yet. That's not a prediction, by the way, just saying it wouldn't surprise me. My only prediction is that Green Bay wins the division. Of course, they'll probably win the Superbowl again too.

I have to agree with Gary...the Green Bay Packers are playing like NFL Superbowl Champs...If you want to be the Super Bowl Champs you have to beat the Champs...Nobody has done it this season YET...My prediction for the 2012 NFL Superbowl Champs......? Your picks look like mine, Jim, with two exceptions. I took the Ravens and Tampa Bay. Detroit is a team on the rise if they can keep their quarterback healthy, which they haven't been able to do so far, but they're going to have to prove to me they can win on the road against a good team before I'll pick them in that situation.

Is anyone surprised a Manning-less Indy is getting blown out? I think we'll see a lot of that until he returns, if he returns. It also looks like Kansas City is really as bad as they looked in the preseason. Biggest surprise of the day so far ... Baltimore blowing out the Steelers.

I'm 2-0 going into MNF tomorrow.

Also, my "step up teams", Skins and Texans won, while my step back team KC lost..So those general predictions came through, at least for the first week.

MNF has a actual pick (Boncos) and a step up team (Broncos) and a step back team (Raiders).

After a full day of NFL and drinking beer, I'm guessing Jim's been passed out for a couple of hours by now.

Since PA is the Keystone state, I say boycott Keystone Beer and Keith Stone!

I'm excited to see my revamped Broncos on Monday...although I'm kind of surprised that they only kept 3 RB's on the roster...I think thats a big mistake....I thought Jeremiah Johnson was far superior to Lance Ball...but they kept Ball. I've never been impressed with Moreno...yeah he looks like a dynamo going into every season but he ends up being a non-factor game in and game out. For a #12 pick he should have been breaking 100 yard games in his sleep from day one. ...like we used to get from Tatum Bell. Instead he is nothing more than a modern day Sammy Winder

My money is on Willis M. ...he will claim the main role in the backfield

    Raiders lose by 8.

I agree with pretty much everything....

I think we kept Ball over Jerimiah "Mountain Man" Johnson is because we could put JJ on the practice squad and I don't think Ball has any practice squad eiligibility left, so we could keep both this way.

"Watch You Talkin' About" Willis Mcgahee looked very good in preseason and may be what we've been missing since Mike Anderson left.

And I agree with the comparision between Moreno and Winder. Moreno's a better receiver, but Sammy was more durable and better in short yardage, he had a real knack for burrowing under the line to get a tough yard...But they are (were) both a step too slow for being big time RBs. Moreno would have been a good 3rd round pick, but he wasn't the 12th best player in the draft...At the time I wanted Orakpo....And still do.

I'm 9-5 so far for all the games. I thought I was going to do better, but if I get at least one of the remaining two right tomorrow for 10 wins I'll be happy with that for the first week. I picked the Pats and Broncos in the last two games of the week.

I only watched the second half of the Broncos game, but they reminded me of the 80's Packers teams. They'd play just good enough to give you hope, but not quite good enough to put together a winning season.

I have two questions for Bronco fans. What happened to the running game? Is Orton the number one quarterback?

I realize watching one half of one game can give you a distorted view, but from what I saw tonight Orton isn't good enough to carry a team and with no running game to speak of that's what is needed. Although, if Orton didn't fumble away the ball on that pass attempt they might have won.

That Moreno guy has some quick to him, but isn't he a running back? I guess dumping off passes to him serves as part of the running game?

New coaching staff though, right? Maybe they just need more time to right the ship. They didn't have the usual off-season to install the new systems.

That guy Robinson the CB from Atlanta should be suspended for the rest of the season..heard they fined him 40 grand today...like last year, 50 grand.

Did they run the ball any better in the second game? Orton isn't the kind of quarterback who can win games without a decent running game to keep defenses honest.

I agree with you on Dunta Robinson. Baltimore might have been a little too happy about whooping the Steelers. I picked the Falcons, so I was happy to see Philly blow it. Can't really blame it on losing Vick either. His replacement went 8 for 9 passing. He did OK.

The Packers suffered a big blow today. Pro-bowl safety Nick Collins is out for the year with a neck injury. It happened on a stupid fluke play. Didn't look bad when it happened, but the neck can be a touchy area.

The Broncos did run a bit better...Knowshon Moreno was out, just sayin'...

I suggest you guys take the "other" team for at least the next 5 weeks against my Broncos. They have an extremely tough schedule and are missing a bunch of key players.

We really needed to win both of these first two games at home to get off to a good start. Splitting them wasn't good enough. As a Bronco fan, I have a feeling we're in for a bad stretch unless we can get some serious lucky breaks.

Yea I read that, was kind of wondering what the actual reaction was there.

Almost 100% of the time you have to live in the city to get the actual (straight) news from there and most of the time the very neighborhood.

Orton does it again and I don't think anyone will need billboards.

Tebow is a strange situation. He has so many of his own fans that are his fans first and Bronco fans second. Then you have people here that are Bronco fans first.

I like Tebow and want to see him start. I don't know if he'll ever be any good, but like most true Bronco fans, we know Orton is 5-19 and if we're going to lose, lets do it with Tebow who is at least exciting.

Buffalo I'm not that familiar with, but Detroit has a good chance at the wild card. I'm not going to say they can unseat the Packers in their division. As a Packer fan, I hope not! They've drafted well since they got rid of Matt Millen. They're going to be tough if Stafford can stay healthy. That's a big if though, he's missed games every year with injuries, and the artificial turf at home isn't going to help that any.

My Colts fought valiantly against the Steelers and averted a national TV drubbing but victory was not to be had.

QB Curtis Painter looked pretty good but Kerry Collins remains our best chance to get wins.

    The nightmare season continues.

    - How about the Bills? Buffalo Bill would be proud.

Coach Chan Gaily is doing a great job.

I remember when he was with the Cowboys and Jerry Jones had to fire him after singing his praises as long as he could.

    - Jerry Jones paraphrased regarding coach Chan Gaily...

Chan's a great coach and we support him every step of the way...

    Chan is our future...

    about 3-4 weeks later...

    Chan was fired today.

    BTW...

Chan will get a chance at revenge when his Bills visit the Cowboys on Sunday, Nov 13th.

    - How about those Lions?

    - Have the Raiders returned?

    - Can Michael Vick stay healthy for at least one game?

    - There's something going on with Andy Reid's teams.

His teams constantly hurt themselves with stupid behavior.

Before a Monday night game a couple years ago, one of his players was disqualified from a game because of fighting - before the game.

Live By The Blitz Die By The Blitz!

Last night, very, very late in the game on a 3rd and 21, Redskins' defensive coordinator Jim Hazlett, called for an all out blitz. ( at least 8 men rushing the QB )

    It was a 3rd and 21.

    3RD AND 21.

His team was ahead by a point and if he had simply played the percentages the Skins would have remained undefeated - IMHO.

    Who converts on a 3rd and 21?

Instead he dialed up a high risk all out blitz and the skins got burned good and they are no longer undefeated.

An all out blitz is OK- depending on the situation, like if you want to knock someone out of field goal range but...

... if that QB escapes the blitz you shouldn't expect the defensive backs to cover the receivers.

That's exactly what happened in a most critical situation.

I've accused Mr. Hanzlett of being too aggressive in the past on his other defensive coordinator assignments.

Skins coach Mike Shananhan has publicly supported that call by Hanzlett, but I can not believe he has not or will not have a talk with Mr. Hanzlett regarding that call.

That call snatched defeat from the jaws of a pretty sure victory and if the Skins season takes a turn for the worst that call will be the catalyst - IMHO.

Mr. **** talker himself, Mr. Deangelo Hall ( who earlier in the week talked of targeting Romo's rib injury )...

...was the victimized db on the play and was also called for a 15 yard facemask penalty to turn a 3rd and 21 into a 40 yard gain that put the Cowboys in easy game winning field goal range.

Mr. Hall didn't like the call by the refs or the coaching staff.

"Sooner or later, someone's going to (expletive) figure it out," Hall said. "You don't have to be a rocket scientist. ... The end result was a first down."

Coach Mike Shanahan said it's easy to second-guess everything.

"We had a chance to have a sack there.

He did a good job scrambling and made a play," Shanahan said.

"It happens. That's the nature of the game. It didn't work."

    Please move the goal posts!

I know the Canadian end zone is 25 yards deep but something can be done so this won't happen again.

Doesn't matter how deep the end zone is when you put a solid obstacle at the front of it, padding or not.

I hope the kid is OK. I know he walked off the field under his own power, but concussion symptoms, neck problems, and other injuries can take a little time to manifest.

I've been cherry picking the most obvious games...Not every game, but most. I am 11-1 this year so far, which I'll take regardless.

BTW Jim...You've done well considering you're picking all games. See how easy it is...until you bet real money? LOL

Here's my 4 "blue plate specials" for this week:

Green Bay (It kills me to say it. Hope I'm wrong)
      NE
      SD

I'm 44-19 so far this year (picking every game). Picked the Bucs for Monday night. Can't believe the Cowboys blew that lead. Worked out well for me though since I picked Detroit. Two undefeated teams left, and both are in the NFC North.

Thanks Kurt...and exactly, it's kind of like golf, I've been complemented on my swing and it's all good till I get a ball inna front o me.

        Cherry picking...no kidding?....
That is how to make the money though.

Good move not betting on Denver.
San Diego next week for ya...sorry for another loss, buddy...

Lions had me sweating... one of only two games I got to watch.

Go Tampa...that is money, Old Girls pool...I've been picking them this year.
So far so good...hope she share's the loot.:p
        Sweating Indy's defense tho.

Dennis...good going, I knew deep inside I shouldn't have bet on St. Louis.

I feel all right tho...I almost bet on Philly, and then listened to myself.

It's exactly how to make money. Money management is the key to winning bets.

Virtually every sports bettor I've even known bets way too many games. There aren't that many good bets in the NFL each week, and some weeks there aren't any good bets.

I'll take 15-1, especially since I (used to) almost always bet the money line and not the spread.

My third straight 4-0 week brings the total to 15-1. I'm going to need to start charging for these picks.

Notes: Texans MANHANDLED the Steelers, pushed them all over the field. If the Texans didn't shoot themselves in the foot 3-4 times, they would have won by 20+ points.

And Good Morning Cowboy and Philly fans. Ouch.

      We will cheat to win
Like I told a friend last night, those are only the penalties we got caught committing.
We got ourselves one hell of a quaterback with Freeman.
Good running back with Blount and a couple good receivers with Williams and Winslow. Offensive line is tight and what can I say about Barber on D.

Well just wanted to add I just won a small parlay which included:

    NE PATRIOTS (-4.5)
    BAL RAVENS (OV 40.5)
    IND COLTS (+10.5)
(I was sweating a little bit on this one in the end)

The bad thing is I only threw $15 at it LOL but I'll try to put a larger one on the next week, see what comes out.

PS. Last season I had an 8-pick parlay with a $10 bet, made $1500 !!!

That's the best I have done so far

Being a Bungles fan, , I predict the Bungles will not win the Super Bowl.
    (But hey, we'll always have '81 & '89:rolleyes

However, I've been a Packers fan since '67.
How bizarre would it be if came down to The Lions and The Pack after last years Packers vs. Bears.

I think The Pack is still the best team in the league, but, it's awfully to repeat.

While I think that Detroit will now make the playoffs, I'm still not sold that they'll actually continue with their luck and "magic." There's a possibility that they might not make the playoffs, but if they do, I see a first round exit to a better team. They're O-line is aging and is one of the worst in football. His teammates have said that Stafford is a 'China doll' and that could pose an issue for his longevity as he's been hurt the last 2 seasons. They also don't pose a threat on the ground and every good team needs that to be able to pound out tough yards when you need them as well as run clock when you're ahead. They've been playing from behind, but in close games where they're ahead, this could pose a real issue.

We have seen that Buffalo is another one of those fast start teams that may fizzle out down the stretch. I'm still sticking with my predictions for N.E., Balt., Hou., S.D., and wild cards of NYJ and Pitt in the AFC. In the NFC I'm making a slight change, I'll take G.B., N.O., S.F., NYG, and wild cards of either 2 of these, Tampa, Philly, Atlanta, Detroit, and Dallas. As I've explained above, Detroit has a decent shot, Tampa is probably for sure out of these, Atlanta is improving, Philly is still dangerous, and I'm not giving up on Dallas. They have a bye to get healthy and with a healthy Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Whitten, and Robinson who proves he can play, I'm seeing too much offense for many teams to cover. It will literally take a secondary like Philly to cover 3 top notch targets and also not forget about Laurent Robinson that has hands, speed, and talent and would be a 2 on an average team and 3 on a good team. Dallas defense is decent as well and improving. We'll see what comes of these in the upcoming weeks.

I hope that Detroit's luck holds out, and we get to watch a battle of the undefeateds on Thanksgiving day.

And by the way - Hank did use the wrong people in his analogy, but he's not a newscaster. And there's nothing that gets you more psyched up for a game than "Are You Ready For Some Football?" Sung by Hank.

Plus- The NFL never censored Keith Olbermann on Sunday Night Football. Even when he was putting out a nightly hate filled tirade against the former President.

      #1: Different Network.

ABC/ESPN does not want to be associated with comments like those.

#2: Keith never stupidly called or alluded to the prez as "Hitler" or called the prez and vice prez "the enemy"...

( OK, I'm sure about the Hitler comment but not about the enemy stuff )

IMHO there's a good chance he may have been high/drunk during this interview with Fox.

Just saw a news story that the Monday Night Football television share has been falling for a long time. Sunday Night Football has a much bigger audience.
Through five weeks, “Sunday Night Football” has averaged 23.2 million viewers, up 1% over the same period last season. “Monday Night Football” is averaging 13.1 million viewers, down 11% from last season at this time. ESPN is in almost as many TV households as NBC, so the difference cannot be explained because of that.
Get it off of ESPN and maybe it will make a comeback.

That's sad, the end of an era if you were/are a Raiders fan.
This post by you, Kurt, was actually the first I heard of this earlier this morning.

Kind of a surprise actually, because he was in his skybox at the last game.
The shot was at a distance, but you could tell he was frail and pale.

Can't say I was in agreement with a lot of his decisions over the years, but it was his team and he let everyone know it.

      RIP Al...

Heard the news that Davis passed away earlier today. Sad news. He was a crazy ol' guy. Obviously an astute businessman or else the Raiders would've gone bankrupt years ago. I'm sure the Raiders will have a new fire lit underneath them and the AFC West should be on high alert--especially my Denver Broncos!

I had a feeling they'd have a break out game today. With the Cards not being a good road team, it just seemed like the week for them to get their first win . . . if they don't blow another big lead.

Figured it was time for the Colts to get their first win, too, with KC as awful as they are. When KC's first string guys couldn't beat the Packers 2nd and 3rd string guys, you gotta figure they're going to have a real rough time winning this year.

Looks like a good call, Dennis. I didn't bet that game.
I'm winning every game except the Giants right now...just happens to be the money game for Ole Girl...after she gets off work, don't want to hear that all day...lol

Edit: I am now officially doomed...&*$#*@ Giants

Good grief! How did Indianapolis blow that big lead? I watched the Brewers beat the Cardinals and the Packers played the Sunday night game so I missed all the day games.

Sheesh, when I went down to my mancave to watch the Brewers I think all my teams were winning except maybe one. When the game was over and I checked the scores I was only 8-4. I still fared pretty well against the rest of the league though.

I picked the Lions for tonight, but I read today that Obama said the Lions are the "greatest team in the history of the NFL" so I might switch that pick. Apparently his speech writers know little about the NFL.

Obama is a huge Chicago Bears fan...I'm sure he was joking and just trying to "jinx" the Lions. He knows enough about the NFL to know better and not have to rely on writers. I'd be willing to bet there's some context to him saying that that's been left out.

Hmm . . . you could be right. The article I read didn't provide the context of the comment. I still wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears win this one. You can usually throw the records out for divisional games in this division. I only put 4 points on the Lions, so I didn't have a lot of confidence in that pick when I made it.

I'm tied for first with two others for the week. They both picked the Lions too, but put 8 points on them. So, if the Lions win, I fall to fourth (someone else put enough points on them to pass me, too); if the Bears win, I remain tied. However, if I switch to the Bears and they win, so do I. I think I'll have to go for it. Well, thanks for talking me into that.

Edit: Too late, the pick is locked.

Tell me about it, a lot of the favorites played very close or losing games...hell Green Bay had me worried there....Oh well it could be worse...you could be a Tampa Bay fan...:p

                    I don't think that I would bet against Detroit tonight...at home...this season...against Dah Bears.

                    I'll even go Detroit -7...(Vegas)

Is it true the San Francisco team wants to change their name to the 48ers?

Detroit is a 7 point favorite?

I'm inclined to take the Bears on a money-line bet to win outright.

The game got fun once Tebow got in the game....I can't believe the refs called that personal foul, especially with the game on the line the way it was.

Well, nice comeback, but it was not to be...

                        NO PIZZA For YOU!!!

I think Tebow will have a new starting job as of NOW.

Freakin kids and dogs and women, I didn't even notice that they had put in Tebow until later...that does it, I'm lockin them all in the closet next week.

You do know it's too early in the season for fairy tale endings ...right?

That was a much better second half for Denver though.

Freakin Giants upset...there goes about 40k out the window... a little too early in the season.

                        I'm outta the pool.

Kind of surprised to see you pick Indy as a cherry pick Kurt.

But against Kansas in Indy is my bet too.

The way their defense is playing, they are due for a win, like I said against Kansas in Indy (I thought) was a good bet.

Painter may end up a halfway decent QB, if he can get rid of the 'jitters' with a little experience.

I also picked the Giants for 'The Money' this week, even though it's not my money...lol

Next year it's back down to cherry picking, renew passport,(I miss just showing my drivers license) and Caliente book in TJ for me.

        Hey Jim...

I struggled coming up with a 4th team this week. Indy was my weakest pick. I just think Indy is a veteran team that has to have some pride. In "real life", I probably would have just picked a 3-teamer this week and not picked the Indy game either way.

I wanted to pick the Texans, but was scared off by the Ghost of Al Davis. Oakland has to be fire up.

And you need a passport to go to Caliente? When did that start?

I was kind of surprised to see the odds stay the same on the Oakland game myself.

It's been roughly three years since an American needs a passport to get back across.

When that first started, it was delayed for a while.

So I go down there with 'Miss know it all' one weekend and she's telling me I can still get back across with the D.L., anyway long story short, I walked across, she had her passport and got in, in front of me.
So dummy me, gets stuck there getting hassled by a customs agent...who just by coincidence I had seen in one of the local watering holes before.

He hassled me long enough to make it clear on the new law...

Then when I caught up to her, told her if I ever had to swim the Rio Grande because of her advice, I'd kick er ass... soakin wet.

She's lived here all her life and knows a lot of customs, border patrol...etc..and that was the only reason I listened to her..

So yep..that's the way ya have to do it now...since 2009, I believe.

If you're swimming the Rio Grande to get back to SD, you've got some serious problems. I'd be angry too.

Reminds me of a family friend we had 40 years ago...He'd claim he wasn't a wetback because he waits until winter, then ice skates across the river.

        I have a prediction.

The Raiders "NOW" have a shot at actually becoming competitive, now that the "the old man" or "The GodFather" is no longer here.

The thing that made him great is the same thing that imprisoned the competitiveness and championship possibilities of that organization.

Dude could'nt change or adapt with the times, stuck in the 50's and 60's along with the mousse that kept his pompadour , Elvis hairstyle in place.

Sometimes, talent and gifts are a two edged sword.

My Colts season from hell continued yesterday.

    Surprises of the week...

SF absolutely destroying TB, ( take that Thom ) & SEA besting the Giants in the Meadowlands.

    - The Raiders pull out a win over the at home Texans making both teams 3 & 2.

A fake punt play was key to the victory.

I guess this one was for Al - Kurt.

    - It was a crazy Sunday in the NFL.

I have the NFL Redzone channel that watches all NFL games and tries to show all TD's and big plays as they happen.

There were lots and lots of great, wild and crazy plays yesterday.

There were lots and lots of boneheaded plays too.

    - My favorite Al Davis quote...

Before the 1985 Super Bowl against the Skins a reporter explained Skins' coach Joe Gibbs approach to offense which was to....

... take what the defense gave them.

Upon hearing that, Al Davis - in typical Raider fashion replied...

"We don't take what they give us, we take what we want."

The Raiders went on to destroy the seemingly invincible Skins 38-9 in another Super Bowl that was over by halftime.

    Hey TL...

Peyton Manning is my favorite NFL player that isn't a Bronco. I thought the rest of the Colts would have some pride and want to prove they aren't a one-man team. Right now, they're proving Manning should have been voted the MVP award every year for the past decade.

Tom Brady misses the season and the Pats still won 11 games. Manning's out for the season and you have to wonder if the Colts will even win a game. IMO, the Brady vs. Manning debate is now pretty much over.

The good news is, I watched Stanford beat my Colorado Buffs and Andrew Luck is the real deal. Hopefully the Colts will draft him and trade another Stanford QB to my Broncos? It worked out pretty well for us last time.

Your not even going to give Tebow a shot, Kurt?

Just keep plenty of Gatorade and tissues at the sideline...lol

I like Tebow and think he should have been the starter beginning this year. I think he's done about as well as he possibly could with the chances he's been given. I'm just not sure how good he will be...Only that he deserves a shot.

On the other hand, I'm 99.99% sure Andrew Luck will be a great NFL QB.

(And I just wanted to give TL a "shot" about trading Elway to us way back when... LOL )

Elway forced that trade - proclaiming that he did not want to play in Baltimore.

Then the NFL scheduled a pre-season game between the Colts & Elway's Broncos for that very first pre-season.

I was at that game - Elways' first trip to Baltimore - the town he royally dissed.

          - He was mooned at least 10 times and could barely hear himself in the huddle.

The Broncs came back to win and the crowd was besides itself after the game.

Elway had no impact on the game other than being the object of intense hatred for the Colt faithful.

          It was wild!!!

      LOL!

Kurt, the prob is we can't score enough points to win.

The defense was always suspect ( even in the Super Bowl win year )...

...but with Payton we - most of the time, found a way to simply outscore our opponents.

Nowadays, if someone puts up only 20 points on us - we're in big trouble.

      My season from hell continues.

      Hey Dennis,
Most of my picks are heavy or close favorites...every week I try and pick at least one (and usually more) upsets, especially when it's close. That's why I picked Buffalo over the Giants. Should be close...who knows?

The Falcons game I ignored because, in reality I wouldn't be betting this many games in a real betting, money season. Just didn't interest me...have to stay a little close to reality in my picks. Haven't done this in about 2-3 years, need practice again. Next year, back to Caliente.

For me, the most interesting game this week is the Skins/Eagles game. There's two conflicting factors I like when picking games:

    1. Mike Shanahan coming off a bye week. Shanahan rarely loses when he's had two weeks to prepare for a game.

    2. The Eagles are a desperate team with some talent. Desperation is a huge motivator, and if they lose, not only is their season likely over, but some coaches and players may lose their jobs.

This should be a good game...Shanahan's cold calcuation vs. the Eagles pure desperation.

For now looks like it's going to be 'who scores last' in the Giants game.
Been tied all the way through...had a feeling it would be close.

Philly is my albatross this year, bet on em they lose, don't bet on em..etc... and they look to win today. Too inconsistent to bet on this year.

Waiting to see if they give Detroit this touchdown...looked like one to me...!TOUCHdown!

Edit - Well, well, go Tampa, even though I bet agin em...:p

It looks like desperation won the day. Still a good chance some players and coaches will lose their jobs before the season is over. I don't see this team suddenly becoming the "dream team" this year.

That's the way Denver was for me last year.

And now, the only undefeated team in the NFL is the Packers. These are good days to be a fan of Wisconsin sports with the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers all doing extremely well.

Total or percentage? As of right now, I'm 20-3.

I got "lucky" with gambing when I was younger...We were planning on moving from Denver to Las Vegas. I was prepared to "bet the ranch" on Marvin Hagler vs. Ray Leonard. I was confident there was no way I could lose. So I was planning on pawning/selling everything we owned for the "sure thing".

However, our move was delayed for a few months..And, Hagler lost. Had we moved to LV in time, I would have lost everything we owned.

It was the best bet I never made. And it taught me a big lesson, without being an expensive one. I was very lucky.

But I will say, I may have had the only girl friend that wanting me to bet MORE. I did pretty well with the NFL. But she didn't understand that I could only pick a few games a year and not every weekend. Once in a while I see games and think the spread is just "plain wrong"...But most of the games I look at and think "I don't have a clue".

And what's up Dennis? I'm confused.

Kurt, of all the fights and controversy I remember...that one still bugs me the most.

There was something hinky there...maybe I was just too much a Hagler fan in those days...maybe I'll look it up and watch it again.

After all these years and the three or four times I've already seen it....maybe something will make more sense...

Or...Pretend I'm picking the same way you are and my picks are only the 16, 15, 14, 13 point games and I'm splitting the other games.

And it isn't like either Jim or I are picking against the spread. We're just having fun.

Yeah, all right. I'll just go with my top four from here on out. That's easier than doing all that typing for all the games anyway.

I just had one of those, 'where did the years go', moments.

I was always curious if anyone ever collected a bundle on the Tyson/Douglas fight...when Steve Wynn was the only one to offer odds...at 42 to 1.

Doing some odds research and suddenly remembered that fight, because the odds were virtually unheard of for a pro heavyweight fight.

This coming February will be 21 freakin years, since that fight.

My fight story is...I was driving a cab in Las Vegas. I took a guy to the airport. I find out he has to leave to go home for an emergency and he's got tickets to a heavyweight championship fight at the LV Hilton. James Bonecrusher Smith was fighting someone. (?)

So, he gives me his ticket. I drop him off and speed back to the Hilton to catch the fight.

I park the cab and walk in....

          7! 8! 9! 10! ding ding ding!

I walked in just in time to see the ref counting the other guy out for the KO in the first round.

I immediately turn around and walk back out and finish my shift in the cab. I never even got to my seat. LOL

That sounds like a LOT of early Tyson fights...I would no sooner crack a beer and before even sitting down...it was over.

It actually got to a point, (we all used to pitch in) we got tired of paying for prelims...lol

I watched Tyson since he was 19-0, saw an article about him in Ring magazine...watched the rest of his career.

    NFL QB changes...

Carson Palmer gets his wish to be traded but it's to the Raiders of Oakland.

After his 4 pick performance, Skins sack Rex Grossman for John Beck from Brigham Young U.

Grossman has 11 turnovers – nine interceptions plus two fumbles – through five games.

Grossman's 66.5 overall rating ranks 32nd of 33 quarterbacks in the league.

Beck will be starting for the first time since 2007 - his rookie year in Miami.

lol - I haven't thought that far ahead. If it came to those two I'd naturally be hoping the Packers win, but a lot can happen between now and then. The Pack just lost another player for the season. It wasn't a starter, but it's starting to look like last year with the injuries. Losing perennial pro-bowler safety Nick Collins for the season hurt, as have a few others.

        Hey Jim...

It was the kind of game with about 3 minutes left my only goal was to some how avoid the shut out, hoping we could just get into field goal range.

Tebow looked bad until that point. He was overthrowing and underthrowing and missing receivers by 15 yards. I think he had something like 24 yards passing until that point in the game.

Then...He started looking like Joe Montana for the last 3 minutes. I just read where the Broncos were the first team since the merger to be down 15 or more points with 3 minutes left and win the game.

To be honest, Tebow confuses me. Both his fans and detractors are correct. He is very inaccurate, but some how seems to "will" himself to a win.

    And good morning TL...

You're lucky Brees didn't throw one more TD or we'd be calling your Colts the 69ers.

Seriously...What's up with the Colts? They are making a very strong case that Manning is the best, most important player of all time. Would losing any other player on any other team have the same impact as losing Manning has?

I really hope Manning's neck will heal...Like I've said before, he's my favorite "non-Bronco" in the NFL.

      Congrats on Tebows' successful debut.

Believe it or not, I'm at a loss for words.

I didn't watch the game, I only tuned in every now and then but every time I tuned in the Saints were threatening or had just scored AGAIN.

      It's very simple.

We can't score enough points to compete.

We could always count on Payton to put up at least 24 points which will win at least 65-70% of NFL games but not now.

Our inability to score changes the dynamics of who we are as a team.

Many teams played from behind and that really helped our defense a lot.

      Is Kerry Collins hurt?

If not he should be playing instead of Curtis Painter.

After all the glory and arrogance I reveled in with the Lakers, perhaps I'm in for a bout of sports fan karma.

My ORIOLES have sucked for the last 15 years - ever since Peter Angelos become the owner.

He initially tried to copy the Yankee model but none of the high priced free agents produced and then I believe he gave up.

      The season from hell continues...

Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos Quarterback Kisses Demaryius Thomas...

Growing up I never liked the butt slap.

I couldn't understand why another dude needed to put is hand on my butt and I did not initiate.

Thankfully the high-five has all but been eliminated it from the culture.

I remember before they fell out, Magic & Isiah Thomas exchanging a kiss before doing battle.

I also remember when the 76'ers won the championship and Billy C. gave the Dr. a long, hard, loud kiss - but that was on the cheek.

Is this a bridge too far??

Hey, if you win a championship I guess I can see it happening.

I don't get it. I've seen a lot of players strike that pose or one very similar after scoring a touchdown. It's usually a quick thank you to their God.

Football used to have such great nicknames...I had a good friend that was a baseball fan and I'd tease him based on George Carlin's old Football vs Baseball bit:

In football, you have Night Train, Tombstone, Too Tall, Mean Joe and the Nigerian Nightmare.

In baseball you have the Splended Splinter, Babe, The Georgia Peach and Pee Wee.

I'll leave Tombstone up there...Here's a hint: He invented the head slap, and had a dozen different head slaps, and even though Decon Jones claims to be the inventer of the head slap, Tombstone really was. Tombstone was the only player Lyle Alzado feared.

Chief Wahoo is a tough one. Chief Wahoo Mcdaniel was a second string d-lineman in the old AFL, played a short time for my Broncos and some other AFL teams. Became better known as a pro rassler...He was (is?) a real Indian chief.

I'd love to see him go one on one with Chief Jay Strongbow.

And...It was Rich "Tombstone" Jackson. He was a pass-rushing terror for my Broncos. A bad injury ended his career prematurely. Tombstone was so bad, even crazy Lyle Alzado was afraid of him.

You know you're bad when your nickname is "Tombstone" and you have a dozen different headslaps and named them all, including the "halo spinner".

At one time, NFL Films called Tombstone the best player not in the Hall of Fame.

    From Wikipedia:
Rich Jackson (born July 22, 1941 in New Orleans, Louisiana) was an American college and professional football player. In college Jackson played for Southern University. Jackson played for the American Football League's Oakland Raiders in 1966 and the AFL Denver Broncos from 1967 through 1969. He played for the NFL Broncos in 1970 through 1971, and the NFL Cleveland Browns in 1972. Jackson was All-Pro in 1969 and 1970.

Jackson, a defensive end whose nickname was "Tombstone", was famous for moves such as the "head slap" and the "halo spinner" which he used to subdue opposing offensive linemen. In the lateLyle Alzado's book "Mile High" he recalled Rich Jackson as the toughest man he'd ever met, and told the story of Jackson breaking the helmet of Green Bay Packer offensive tackle, Bill Hayhoe, with a headslap.

Jackson's career was cut short by a severe knee injury, but he finished with an unofficial total of 43 sacks, 31 of which came during the three season period of 1968-1970. He finished with 10 sacks in both 1968 and 1970 and posted a career-high total of 11 in 1969.[1] He was named 1st Team All-AFL by the AP, Pro Football Weekly and UPI at the conclusion of the 1968 season and by the AP, NEA, NY Daily News, Pro Football Weekly, The Sporting News and UPI at the end of the 1969 season. He was also a unanimous 1st Team All-NFL choice in 1970.

Despite the shortened career, Sports Illustrated's football expert, Dr. Z, Paul Zimmerman, said that Tombstone Jackson was perhaps the finest overall defensive end and pass rusher he ever saw, a surefire Hall of Famer if he would have had a longer playing career, in a bigger media market. As it was Jackson will be remembered as a great one, only by a handful of football insiders, including those who lined up with and against him.

Jackson wore number 87 with the Broncos and was part of the inaugural class of inductees into the Denver Broncos' "Ring of Fame". He was inducted in 1984 along with safety Goose Gonsoulin, running back Floyd Little, and wide receiver Lionel Taylor.
In 1975 he was voted to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. [2]

    A Young Tim Tebow...

In Primetime's "10 Best" on the NFL channel...

After saluting the Lion defense which sacked Tebow a reported 9 times...

    Deon did the Tebow Bow.

    I was much amused.

Tebow was only sacked 7 times, just like last week.

But, he did fumble 3 times, losing two, and threw a Pick 6 that had a 101 yard return. That was when he wasn't over-throwing receivers by 10 yards.

He looked really bad. Ryan Leaf bad.

And your Colts at least have a future. You'll likely get either Manning or Luck or both, next year, while I'm seriously considering my future as a fan of the NFL. I'm not sure I feel like sitting through 3-4 years of rebuilding, with no guarantee things will get better even then.

      I miss Mike Shanahan.

I watched part of that game. Does Tebow ever slide? He's going to have a short career if he doesn't learn to avoid some of the punishment he's taking. Not exactly a good way to build a young player's confidence either, throwing him to the wolves before he's ready. Maybe he's played better in other games, but he looked lost out there from what I saw.

          Tebow slide? NEVER! LOL

I like the kid, but I don't think he's going to make it. I can see him as a "Slash"/back up QB, but I don't think he has the skills to be a fulltime QB.

These are a few of my picks:

    HOU Over 41
    ARI Win -2.5
NYG Win +9 (might not win but the spread is a bit large to cover)
CIN Over 41.5 (could possibly even win)
DEN Win +7.5 (have this feeling that OAK is not going to have a good game)
    SF Win -4

I don't expect all to convert so I'm not going to place all 6 picks on one bet.

I have picked up to 11 on the same bet in the past and won but obviously this is VERY random when I manage to achieve it.

I would like to say "I'm sure" that at least 4 of these are safe bets but we all know that there's no such thing as a "safe bet".

So do your own due diligence and pick your parlays!
