What's so great about backlinks?

I understand the importance of using a well researched key word or keyword phrase and then writing keyword specific content, but I don't understand the real value of back links. If you know would you mind to tell me?

    In his WSO Backlink Takeover, Brian Anderson says, "True dominance in the search engines takes compelling content and widespread diversified linking."

    Backlinks are another part of the equation of getting ranked by the search engines and thus getting more traffic to your website. Hope that helps a little.

    If you keywords are "blue foo" and you have links from another website to yours that saw "blue foo" then Google takes that into consideration when ranking your website (though I understand that is somewhat depreciated in the last few years).

    In addition to helping your site get more traffic directly through the link, and as Meltex has pointed out, backlinks are vitally important for improving your search engine rankings.

    You want to get to the first page (high on the first page) of the SERPs (search engine results pages) so that you can attract more organic traffic. Why is this important? Because it is targeted traffic: people who were searching for exactly what you are offering.

        Many thanks to all of you who are contributing to this thread. I have been around marketing online for a long time but haven't really grasped "the why" of back links. I always heard that they were important but just didn't get it. Your remarks and comments are being a great help to me an I'm appreciating your input.

    Backlinks are links coming into a website from another website or web page, in the early days of the Internet before the birth of the Search engines, back links were the most popular way to navigate the web. Today the main importance of backlinks are for SEO. Backlinks are also sometimes called inward links, inbound links, inlinks, incoming links, and SEO links.

    Search engines count the number of backlinks that a website contains, this count goes towards helping determine the rank the website should receive. Google has built a rank system called PageRank allow though Google has stated it no longer views page rank as a major ranking factor the page rank of any website or webpage is still active today and can be viewed either by using Mozilla Firefox Resource 1 and installing the Google Page Rank Toolbar plugin, Resource 2 or by simply using a online service found by searching on the term whats my page rank.
    Google Page Rage is briefly explained by Google themselves as "When Google was founded, one key innovation was PageRank, a technology that determined the "importance" of a web page by looking at what other pages link to it, as well as other data." .

    Hope this helps Backlinks are the cornerstone of SEO and can be time consuming but worth the effort.

      Backlinks are extremely important to get top positions on the major search engines for particular keywords. The same keywords that you use for your webpage should be used as your anchor title in a backlink. The better the page ranking for a linking site the better results you will get from your backlinks which will boost your webpage closer to the top of the search engine. Everything you do for anthing involving SEO should be done carefully and in harmony. Most backlinking sites will most likely never be seen by acvutal people. The point is to do this for the search engine spiders.

      Then it becomes very important to start adding these backlinks into your own articles and press release. If done correctly, your search engine exposer will explode!
