Man for the last 8 years I've had all the work i wanted - whenever i wanted.

I have painted / renovated hundreds of houses. Well its all over this year - there is no work.

Its kaput - same for my other painter buddies. The real estate bubble has finally burst down here this winter.

Now i just got an engineering diploma in control systems and computer networks which pays very well in australia. I am four papers shy of my degree too. Could be earning 50K - 200K per year.

But i have no experience as i have been painting. My Im stuff aint paying the grocery bills at present either.

Shit i am going to have to move to australia and start a new career.

If its any consolation, NZ and OZ are better placed than most places in that they are resource strong economies...other places are suffering a lot...LOT more...and more will follow.

The bubble had to end some day...by teh sounds of things, you'll be well placed in a few years when property overshoots on the downside as it has on the upside...look on the bright side!

I am not sure whether Australia will be better off as commodity prices would be the next bubble to burst, as it appears to be happening (thankfully) with oil prices. It is a case of America exportings its problems to the rest of the world. It seems that it may just avoid a recession but many of the other countries are already experiencing negative growth.

The next country to watch would be China. It is the largest trading partner of a large number of countries including Australia, Japan and India. If its economy gets a hard landing, then you are going to have another wave of contagion.

If you expect the price of oil or other commodities to be in anything other than a standard bull market correction...I think you will be dissappointed. They're just taking a breather and getting rid of some speculative froth before the new upleg....IMHO.

You see...commodity prices across the board are still 60-80% below their inflation adjusted all time highs. Crank on another 3bn people and a vastly increased and rapidly growing global consumption class and you have a recipe for them to soar to levels that will stun most people.

Oil at $500 a barrel only has to move as much in percentage as it did from $40 to its recent high....and it was at @$40 less than 3 years ago.

We already took Russle Crowe, you may as well come on over too.
Seriously though, why not? The culture is almost identical, and if you find the state capitals overwhelming in size, there are plenty of satellite towns that are about the same size as Wellington.

I think you may be wrong there. We're well stocked with pretty much every form of mineral that's got value... particularly radioactives. When oil gets too expensive, the countries that have nuclear power will be coming our way. Worst case scenario, even if all the markets start to collapse, we can be self sufficient for primary industries, and setup the secondary ones soon enough.
As it is, we already export ~25% of the worlds unrefined uranium, and we have the largest deposits of any individual country in the world. The only thing preventing us sending out more is the three mines policy.
We can do WITHOUT anymore Russel Crowes here thankyou
... lol ... might boost the phone repair business I guess

Australia can`t support millions more ... we don`t have the WATER!!
Makes me sick seeing the waste of such a valuable resource in cities
... Govt solution? "Oh just build another &^&$^&^$ DAM!!!

There`ll be civil war here in Queensland if they try it on the Baffle Creek
... one of Queensland's few remaining undisturbed coastal rivers, I spent
many a great fishing trip there when I was younger ... magnificent ... it`s
not on building a dam there!!

BaffleCreek.com.au - Baffle Creek, Queensland, Australia.

The sooner we start relying on renewable energy the better ... WTF
do you think will happen IF oil get`s to expensive and the world wants
            uranium?

Sure won`t benefit Australians especially if someone like Madman Bushco
is running things ... we do NOT need to mine and pillage the planet like
we are doing and you know it all comes down to money ... not what is
best for the planet ... we don`t need oil ... oil companies do a good job
of stopping anything that threatens their pot of black gold ...

... now millions die so they can stay rich ... F**K `EM!!

            Wind Power
            Tidal Power
            Solar Power

JHarvey ... you wanna try living in the bush on disability pension like
me ... you won`t think Australia is so dandy then I gaurantee you ...
sure it`s still great to be Aussie and I wouldn`t want to live anywhere
else ... way things are going might be finding a fricken cave to live in
soon ... well, I know of one not to far from me actually hehhe ...

Just might be the safest place to be in 2012 to

How about going to Dubai or Abu Dhabi for some time?

With your engineering diploma in control systems and computer networks even without much experience I am sure you could make loads and it would be all tax free. You should really look into it.

                    Hehe Indy,
Gareth is mistaken. The body temperature of a sheep is pretty much
the same everywhere in the world so we are reliably informed.

Also "chicks" are pronounced "choocks" in Oz and have feathers until
they hop on the barby. Needs actually to look for Jumbucks ..HINT!
"Sheilas" are females of the human persuasion in Oz and are likely
to react violently if compared inadvertently to sheep or chickens.

Just thought it best to clarify matters before Gareth made a fatal error

    Do it.

And learn Chinese or get a translator (or software ) that can make your
sites in Chinese. I had a buyer from China buying my cancer articles !

That is where the money went - China, and to the Arabs.
