The dog will be euthanized, but does anyone know if the dog's owner has been charged with anything?

I looked through some news websites but didn't find anything on charges.

Sgt. Joe Grubbs, Bakersfield Police spokesman, said the dog will be quarantined for 10 days then euthanized.

The neighbor was pulling their vehicle out of their gated driveway when the dog escaped.

The neighbor called 911 on behalf of the boy and his mother.

Totally irresponsible on the dog owners part then. The dog "escaped" through an open gate. Right.

It does happen. It was the dog's owner who called 911 after witnessing the incident. Is it so improbable that the 8-month-old dog (still basically a pupply) slipped through an open gate as the car was driving in, or that the owner wasn't aware that it was capable of such a violent attack on a child?

I'm just going by what Joe posted: "The neighbor was pulling their vehicle out of their gated driveway when the dog escaped."

The dog shouldn't have been loose with the gate open. It clearly was. I don't know where that happened, but the laws are pretty strict here about untethered dogs. The owner would be brought up on a slew of charges here. I know because it happened a few years ago less than a mile from my house. Very similar situation, a dog left the owner's yard and attacked a 10 year old girl riding by on a bike. A passerby stopped his car and chased the dog off. The girl wasn't as lucky as the boy. She had a lot more stitches, including on her face.

If you own a dog, it's up to you to know the laws regarding your dog. And it's up to you to take precautions that it can't attack innocent people. Totally irresponsible as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe I imagined things, but I thought I saw the dog get over the fence at one point. But a dog that is this violent should NEVER be that free, EVEN in a locked yard.

Seriously, that dog acted like it was RABID! This isn't normal behavior.

I didn't see that the first time. I tried to view it again to see if I could see what you're talking about but for some reason they've made the video private.

Yeah...the darn video is private now that's it's been played on the national news! I dunno...possibly trying to avoid some sort of negative publicity or potential problems of some sort? If that's the case it may be a tad bit late for that.

Very sad situation and very heroic cat!

After healing, I hope the kid is encouraged to hang around friendly dogs so a lifelong fear doesn't develop.

I predict a celebrity cat that gets a new satin pillow, rhinestone collar, Fancy Feast every day and neighbors who set out little treats for it.

    That's a tough cat.

Why did the mother leave the kid on the ground at the end of the video?

You can say THAT again. Now THAT is bravery!

Why did the mother leave the kid on the ground at the end of the video?
I HOPE it was simply that she wanted to dress things up properly. If she were SURE the child was out of danger, she could get some antiseptic and/or cleaning solution, and bandages, and make sure he is OK and clean first.

I saw the interview with the family on TV last night.
Apparently the cat adopted the parents 5 years ago following them home from the park and said "You're my people now."
When the kid was born the cat would curl up in the crib next to him and cuddle with him. The cat has been a life long friend and look out for the boy.
So the cat laying the smack down on the dog attacking his boy is totally in the realm of something that would happen.

For the record I love cats.

Back when I was in my early teens, we had a cat like that. It just walked in one day and stayed.

It must be a thing with ex-strays that makes them totally unafraid of dogs to the point of attacking them. Perhaps it's something to do with surviving on the streets for a time that makes them that way.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I'm not quite certain that is it, Whatever, as we had a cat named Max who attacked a Jack Russel Terrier who was growling and snarling at me. We had Max since he was a baby though. He was never a stray. Anyway, I caught the Jack Russel getting into the garbage trying to get a ham bone and Max came running up, hackles up, growling and jumped on the dog, bore in his claws and started biting ferociously. The Jack Russel hightailed it.

I always thought it was because he loved me, but in thinking back, I'm wondering now because every Sunday morning when I was running around like a crazy lady trying to get the kids and hubby ready for church on time, Max would hide on the side of the bookcase at the end of the hall, reach out with just one claw and snag my pantyhose as I rushed by. Every Sunday! You'd think I would have learned, but I guess I was just too frantic to think about him ambushing me, haha!

Well, I just found out that the owner was fully aware that the dog didn't like children or bicycles, so I take back any benefit of the doubt that I'd expressed.

Would never have thought a cat would go against a dog to protect a child! never heard of that happening before..I saw it on the news as well and I was amazed really.
That's one brave cat, and coming from one that doesn't like them all that much..unless they're trained.

Does the article explain how there were three different camera angles? Were they three different security cameras?

      Cats ...dogs...

The dog would say "You own me, I love you, I'll lay down my life for you"

Cats say "I own that little kid, he feeds me, if a dog tries to come onto my property and bites something I own....there is going to be a fight"

      I'm only half joking.
