Need Help With "Boondock Marketing"

I have a client that would like for me to generate some leads for him. He is willing to do a rent-a-site plan like I have setup for some roofers who referred him. However, unlike the roofers his physical location is 50 miles out of the city so I can't build a Google Local listing for him and park my optimized site there to get his phone ringing.

I could rank easy and fast in the city for his keywords but the Google local listings would always sit above him. Any ideas on how to work around this obstacle? Long gone are the days when a suite number at a Regus virtual office center will work.

    Well... it depends on what kind of hat you want to wear and since we're not allowed to talk about flagrantly black hat stuff here, you probably won't get many suggestions other than use a friend or family member's address and not display the address.

    Have you thought about just gunning for his local area, and then also setting up landing pages for surrounding cities even if they're small? A lot of small town rankings can end up being quite a few phone calls.

        Hmmm. Using the business address of someone they know that sounds hopeful. I have a roofing site that was setup in Google Places with the address of a hotel that offered mailboxes. That was first created in 2012 I believe. After several Google updates over the last few years it not only survived but came back in the 7 pack. The one thing about it is that I selected to not show the address. So now I am thinking the is alive by accidentally using the technique you are speaking of combined with occasional back linking.

        As for gunning his local area it is in the country and the next nearest populated city is 30 miles away with the nearest metro city 50 miles away. I can only find small numbers for the metro city with no data available for the smaller closer city.
        Guys when you say setup landing pages for smaller cities are these pages on the main site or separate "mini sites" for each city?

          Just because keyword planner, market samurai, long tail pro and other keyword tools don't show the data, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

          You would be surprised by the amount of traffic you can get with certain things that have no data displayed.

          Again going to agree with iAm here. lets do a visual shall we? look at: https://www.google.com/maps/place/La...ccd5e6d5b379a3 Basically on that map, EVERY word is a potential target. "Whitney", "Sloan", "Winchester". Ask your client where he lives.. does he say the next closest town, or does he say he lives in some community name. I know where I live... the answer is usually a community name, and in some parts it is actually the county. These become distinctions and targets that may not measure a hill of beans in Google, but measure in stacks of gold in results.

    Nameless is spot on. And providing an example of the difference between just building a website and
    providing real value and returns to the client.

    From the personal experience of a hotel operator in the boondocks who has looked for
    contractors, you won't find a significant number of searches according to Google or any
    keyword tools. There will be enough searches from prospects as far as your client is
    concerned.

    In my town, the known contractors are either too busy for our small projects, or they are people
    I don't want on my hotel property.

    We are happy to go up to about 50 to 70 miles away for a lot of work needed. That said, it is still
    hard to find contractors via the search engines. In my area, most industries are about as bad
    as locksmiths when it comes to finding someone actually in that 50 to 70 mile radius.

    Or, I can't find a listing for someone I know of in my area. Recently had to get some pool repair
    work completed and I know there is a good guy in the town ten miles away. I don't know his name
    or company name, and he did not come up in a search at all.
