Effective email subject line

Ask a question that you know is related to them that could help them if it was answered, then answer it in the first paragraph of your email.

If you want to know if they opened your email, put an image in it and host it on your own server, then check to see how many times it gets downloaded.

Your question is very broad.

In fact, your question is so general that it's almost impossible to answer correctly.

You need to spell out what niche you're in.

You also need to spell out what kind of updates you send.

Do you send informational updates?

Do you just tell your list members that you have a new blog post or are you selling directly?

These of course require different headlines.

With that said, you need to be able to tell a story with your headline.

You have to remember that people on your list are probably members of other lists.

They've seen it all.

You have to stand out from the other email marketers sending to your list members.

How do you do that?

Personally, I would segment my list into smaller subsections, and I would experiment with different story-based subject lines.

A story-based subject line identifies a problem, identifies a solution, and identifies an outcome.

For example, "By simply making this one change, I made $2,000 extra in 24 hours."

Do you see how that works?

Your eyes get glued on the $2,000 and 24 hours.

You are also intrigued by the mention of “this one little change.”

You need to experiment with story-based and outcome-based titles.

Why?

Every list has different sets of personalities.

Every list has its own set of circumstances.

In other words, every list is different.

By breaking up your list into smaller subsegments and testing different story-based titles in each segment, you would identify which type of headline appeals to your list members the most.

Depends on the mail right?

When I send a cold e-mail to a prospect I often put something like: "Question" or "Update?" in there. People are curious.

You should test things out, because there isn't one correct answer to your question. What is your niche? Who are the people you target? You need to address your target audience in such a way that they will be eager to open your email! Depending on what kind of information your emails contain, you need your subject line to be a catchy summary of the content. And depending on your audience, you need to make it intriguing, funny, friendly, helpful... ecc.
