hi all - I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to help me understand a bit more about possible situations of sales development in the hospitality industry...

I am doing a course (so I am very very very very very novice) and I am really struggling to understand sales development and how it fits together

any help is greatly appreciated!

    What exactly are you having difficulty with?

    Assuming you mean the most traditional of definitions...

    "Sales development is a phone-based team that identifies, connects with, and qualifies leads. When a lead is qualified, they then pass the qualified lead to a sales person who takes over for the rest of the sales process." - Google Search

    So the process is this (going to use pizza places as an example):

    You call generally a list of cold prospects (they don't know you or your product/services) to have to get through the gate keeper (cashier working the phones) so you can talk to the decision maker (owner of the restaurant). Then you have figure out if they are in the least bit interested in your services or what you have to offer (qualifying them), then finally attempt to set a date for your sales rep to go talk to them.

    Once again using the pizza restaurant as an example (because simplicity may help you at this point), let's go through some issues you may face in each step

    List of Cold Prospects
    • Bad Phone Numbers
    • Wrong Phone Numbers
    • Wrong Locations
    • Not Pizza Places

    Getting through the Gate Keeper
    • Owner isn't here
    • We are franchise - call home office
    • Get you to my manager
    • I don't know
    • You sure you don't want pizza
    • Takes too long on the phone

    Talking to the Decision Maker
    • Not the *real* decision maker (manager vs owner)
    • Don't have time
    • Hangs Up on You
    • Says not interested without hearing what you have to say
    • Won't answer questions
    • Won't Schedule an appointment
    • Asks for call backs
    • Doesn't Remember You
    • Curses at you then hangs up
    • Completely Lies

    Basically, if I understand your situation right, you may want to look up 'cold calling' books or help guides. They will serve you better than searching for sales development. Sales development sounds better because everyone knows cold calling sucks. I used to do it. The outcomes are numerous. It all starts with a script, and you better hope it's a decent one

    What if say, you were the pizza place and you wanted to develop your sales?
    What sort of situation would you encounter?

        Hi there - the latter really! I don't have a pizza store I am trying to understand sales development in the hospitality industry and what 'hypothetical' scenarios.

        I am doing a course and most of the other material makes sense, though this sales development is a struggle!

          Here is what sales development is in a nutshell.

          Senior sales reps are to busy being burdened with ongoing deals, existing customers, closing deals, and so on. They don't have time to dedicate to 50+ prospecting calls and lead vetting each day. But they do need to grow the revenue.

          In comes in the Sales Development Rep. They are the professional prospector. They cold call and follow up on leads to find the needle in the haystack. A potential customer that may want to spend money with your company.

          So you have 2 roles. A hunter (sales development) and a closer (sales rep).

          The sales rep kills what a sales development rep catches.

          Makes sense?

    Sadly, I still have no idea what the OP is asking about or wants to know. Been watching this thread for a few hours since it was in the main forum.

    The words are there, but the meaning doesn't come through.

      Thanks Jason - I am even more sad! Cause I have to write a section of a paper about it and really struggling with the context as well!

      I understand (somehow) what Jeremiah Walsh is suggesting though say in a restaurant or hotel, I am not sure how would that apply...

      Unless it's perhaps about potential returning customers (i.e folks who may have booked in the past or expressed interest) and then approaching them in attempt to close the sale?

    Just for another example. (As I think about my reply, I realize I am thinking more
    about the process commonly called business development. I hope that's what you mean.)

    Suppose you are Group Sales Director for a hotel that has rooms, conference
    and banquet facilities.

    As Group Sales Director your task would be get groups to come in and use the hotel's facilities.

    As such, you, or you and your team, would use internet marketing to get the word out about
    your hotel and all of it's amenities and facilities. So, you would get inbound emails and
    phone calls to book, or inquire about booking.

    You would also use travel agents to refer groups to your hotel, and the travel agents get
    a commission. Large companies often have in house travel agents and you would also
    contact those departments to get the companies group or meeting business. There are also
    online travel agencies (OTA's) like hotels.com that you can use to help get group business.

    You would also reach out by phone, email, direct mail, and social media to people who
    work with groups - meeting planners and such. For example, one of my employees has
    a sister who administers a professional association for Doctors. Every year, they have a
    convention and arranging those conventions is the bulk of her job. She is on a first name
    basis with thousands of Doctors.

    You also might be going after government groups that have large meetings or conferences.
    In that case, there would probably be a competitive bid process for you to go through to
    get that business. Besides your own initiatives, there are consultants who help people
    get government business.

      What advertising media would be used then in these circumstances?
      I guess some print and online mostly?

    Yes, some print and online.
    Print wise would probably be in business sections of newspapers such as
    the Wall Street Journal, and trade or association magazines.

      Thanks guys you have been awesome - I think I can articulate couple of examples now where sales development would be used within the hospitality industry and what sort of advertising media that would be suitable!

      I have few other questions (on other topics) so looking forward to get it out!
