Local marketing online can be an amazing way to build another revenue stream pouring cash into your pocketbook. It can also be frustrating if approached incorrectly.

The problem is that many Internet Marketers discount the amount of knowledge they have. Remember, you have forgotten more about Internet Marketing than the brick and mortar business owner will ever know! Regardless of your belief in yourself, you are an expert in their eyes.

When trying to set up a business offering local marketing online services, there are so many ways to monetize your knowledge. Don't think you have to offer every possible service. Focus on the ones you know, and become the Local Internet Expert in your city.

Here are a few actionable tips you can use today to instantly improve your closing rate, and capture new customers, or even your first customer!

- Contact a business owner whose establishment you frequent. Business owners are more receptive to someone they know, and it is easier to get your feet wet.

- Offer a bonus for customers that act today, or this week, or by the end of the month. That allows you to contact them again before the deadline if they do not buy today.

- Build a site and get it ranked BEFORE you approach your prospect. If you can show that "YourCityPlumbing.com" is ranked on page one, it is an almost guarantee you will sell it to a plumbing company immediately.

- Offer a FREE "Local Marketing Online" course for business owners. Teach some rudimentary tips and tricks. Simply getting them thinking in the right direction makes selling easier.

- Approach local business owners with a poll. Ask them which topics are most important to them online, and give them a list of 10 or 20 services. Chances are the business owner will notice things on your list she was not aware of, and this gets a discussion going.

These are some very easy ways to certify your status as the Local Marketing Online "Guru", but they are just first step moves.

    The rotary clubs and offline business networking events like 4networking love these kind of things and welcome guest speakers.

    Not only does it build your credibility with local businesses but you make some excellent contacts and referrals.

    I have got a lot of business from doing this.

    Great tips. They serve as "ice breakers" and will definitely help you to approach prospects from a position of authority and trust, instead of just being another stranger attempting to sell internet marketing services to them. If executed properly, this should result in far greater response and conversion rates than taking the traditional sales approach.

    Excellent post. Thanks for bringing it home.... I am trying to narrow my focus with my offers as you adviced and finding that it works much better then trying to please everybody's whim.

    I also live in Calgary and I know there are so many businesses here that could take advantage of online marketing they just need to be educated a bit.

      Google Places is a real in with many small businesses. Walk in the door with an internet connected laptop, notebook, or tablet computer. Show them the google map and that they aren't on it. Offer to put them on "the map" for $20 right then and there.
      A few minutes later they are getting a 'phone call from Google' and you have established yourself as an IM guru and you've made $20.
      Now, you can make a pitch for additional services.

    I have not done this yet because I really don't frequent too many places.

    But if you let your friends know what you are doing chances are they'll recommend you to someone they know.

    I'm actually supposed to present to my roommates boss who owns a successful CPA firm and then a coworker at my job recommended me to her other boss at a furniture store.

    YES! I was thinking about this earlier today and wanted to post on here seeing what kind of classes helped people gain clientele.

    My idea was to do one for google places and then at the end of it offer them the full optimization package with continuity attached.

    I imagine this is a damn good ice breaker.

    You have to think, this business owner has poured everything they had into this business, it's their baby. You're asking about the thing that they love and nurture and care about and how they need help doing that.

    What kind of business owner would say no to that?

        Millions of people spend time on the internet daily, but most of those are surfers and have no idea how to do what we can do while we're sleeping. That's why there is so much money to be made in local marketing.

            I do not personally cold call, but I do sometimes hire someone to do so and have done so in the past. It's an effective method, but can be too effective if you're not willing to expand beyond a certain point

    What I had done is Put up a Big Banner in front of my office so that people can see, as soon i put up the banner, the traffic increase 20% I had seen on my google analytics Thanks ..for the good write up

    Many business owners will check your references. Very important to have a few clients that you have done business with in the past that will give you a good recommendation.

    Creating a large Twitter, Facebook Business Page and LinkedIn Account for yourself goes a long way when they are performing their due diligence on your Marketing Company.
