There's oodles of talk about "Creating Mobile Websites" for businesses.

So...you create a Mobile Site for a business.....HOW are the business customers/clients/patients....going to FIND your Newly Created Mobile Site?

Google?

I'm curious.

Thanks

In a word yes - google doesn't distinguish between a mobile site and a non mobile site unless it conforms to XHTML mp and even then there's no guarantee it will rank better just because it's on mobile search, in fact a valid mobile site will only be shown on google search for non smartphones and are identified with a green handset, the handset is not shown on mobile search for smartphones

I think google should identify the difference between regular desktop sites and sites for smartphones the same way they do for XHTML mp valid sites

So unless your mobile site is your only form of web exposure it's kinda pointless trying to rank it, your much better off trying to rank your main site since it handles the redirection or displaying of mobile content, I posted an extensive thread on this very subject here on wf that you should read to get a better under standing - I'll post the thread later when I get on my desktop pc

        Cheers

Jup. There's no 'alternative' to Google to find mobile websites on your cellphone

    Jay,

That is what I was going to suggest, in terms of trying to rank their main website high in the SERPS.

I suppose other ways could be through the use of QR Codes, SMS Marketing, Facebook post - offer a special 'mobile website' only coupon - kind of forcing customers to the mobile site to receive the coupon....from that point you would hope that they would remember the site!!

    Anyway, just my pennies worth.

Don a mobile site is of course what someone using an iphone or other smart phone will see when they load up a site.

For example, I am on my iphone and go to amazon.com and I don't see their normal site, I see the mobile version of their site.

This is because amazon.com can tell I'm using my iphone and by using a redirect script, sends me to the mobile version of their site (i.e. their mobile site) instead of the desktop/normal full version of their site.

So the answer of how they see your mobile site is the redirect script identifying the user's device and redirecting to the mobile version for those using mobile browsers on their phones.

But they get to the mobile site just as if they were going to the normal site, since you would have set up a redirect script for mobile users, already.

Let's say I'm a Tourist staying at a local motel....looking for a place to eat this evening.

HOW would I find a restaurant I had just created a Mobile website for?

Depend on the restaurant's "regular" website's position on Google?

      Thanks,

Put a QR code on the motel's channel guide or in those little folders with local information that are always in hotel rooms.

When they do a search for the site on their phone they'll click the link. Then the mobile version of the site will be viewed.

If they were on their desktop when they did the search, the full-sized version would appear.

          Is this what you mean?

For right now I do it the easy way. I target local businesses who are already on page one of google with their regular website which redirects to the mobile. The good thing is that these people already have a regular website so they know the value of having a website and a web precense.

How ever you promote you regular site is also how you're promoting your mobile site. The mobile site and regular site are the same things really, just optimized for different platforms. The only way I see of promoting a mobile site over a regular site is that you'd probably send all your QR code traffic directly through to your mobile site since obviously you need to use your phone to scan a QR code.

Hi Don they find the mobile site in all kinds of ways.

    Through google mobile search
    Qr Codes
    Redirection
    Promotions
    articles etc
    Added to mobile website directories
Converting the website into and app
    SMS

Basically the same as a normal website with some extra opportunities.

    Don,

Try to think of a mobile site as just a different version of their main website - NOT a completely separate website. A mobile site is simply a mobile optimized version of their regular website. So whenever someone visits their regular website using a mobile device, they will be redirected to the mobile version for a better end-user experience.
