More Cold Calling Advice... From a... NOOB!?!
Let me start by saying I quit my job a few months ago because I was so convinced that I would easily just pick up the phone the following morning and start banging out phone calls until I had some clients!
Well, I was wrong because I was sooo scared to make phone calls - I`d sit in a room with a phone and no TV for hours just trying to psyche myself up for a phone call...
If somebody put a gun and a phone in front of me - and told me to put one to my ear.. I`m not even sure which one I would have picked
This trend continued from August 1st, 2011 - October 4th, 2011. Yep, I finally bit the bullet and started making phone calls today.
So, what happened?
I think a few things kind of just clicked at the same time.
First, putting things into perspective - can you believe there are people signing up to go fight in a war in the Middle East - yet you're too scared to pick up a phone and talk to somebody?!?!
Secondly, I think a lot of people are hung up on selling things right over the phone - simply because you only have a very short time on the phone and you're expected to spew all this information over your prospect and hope to sway them.. when you already know they're pretty much waiting to say NO anyways...
The solution? Try coming at these people with a different approach.. don't sell them over the phone - find out a reason to meet with them, there's a thread on here where a guy just called up businesses and said he was building a website profiling local companies on how they're doing in the current economy.
This is what worked for me.. I picked up the phone today and started calling companies - telling them I was creating an online directory and to get the ball rolling I would be offering free life-time listings to the first 25 companies...
The beautiful part of this method is that you don't even have to worry about the gatekeeper. Whoever picked up the phone I just started tellin' em what I was doing - and they'd pass me right over to the boss!!
Honestly with this method - you have so much confidence since you're giving something so valuable for free - you can just laugh (on the inside) at the people that reject your offer. A guy told me today that advertising doesn't benefit his type of business... despite the fact there are over 100 local searches for his services on a monthly basis.. These are the people we are scared of getting on the phone??!?!?
So what type of success did I have today?? My first day of not being a wank and hiding in the depths wondering when I'll finally take the plunge??
I landed two meetings on 16 phone calls...
Could you stand to make 16 phone calls a day?? It's so friggen laughable that this is something I've been scared of for the past two months!!
I know I am no expert in this area since today was my first day - but maybe this will help the guys that are still in their heads about calling.
For some reason when you read about a seasoned veteran talking about cold calling you often think they have some sort of edge over you... hopefully my noob status in this arena will give confidence to others.
Lastly, let me say how much more confident I feel after just 16 phone calls - by next week I'll have no qualms about walking into businesses.. the only thing holding me back right now is that I'd like to refine my approach a little bit first!!
