Rejected Miserable and Annoyed

Hi all,

So I have been posting ads for telemarketers for my seo company and tonight I invited people to an open conference call to further discuss the position.

The idea was potential candidates would learn about me, my company and their position and if they were not interested then no harm, no foul. Anyone left would be able to start Monday.

Well, I logged in, and NO ONE I mean NO ONE showed up. I waited like a loser highschool girl hanging out at the boys homeroom locker for 15 minutes hoping someone would show up late. But alas, it was just me, my thoughts and my Mountain Dew.

So this post is part rant and part question. What do I do now? I've used Craigslist and Jobvertise to advertise.

Conference calls and webinars like that aren't going to work in your situation unless you have a TON of interest.

Why did you not just ask for resumes, and hire like a normal business would?

      iAmNameLess,

I posted an ad, gathered resumes and then told them about the group conference call. Before I got into the IM business I worked from home for many companies that would have screening conference calls before going deeper into the hiring process.

Are you saying I scared these people off?

Because it is likely that those companies were offering "business opportunities" not an actual hiring process where you are a REAL employee. They also are likely to have a big following or have the capacity to REALLY market themselves. They aren't just selling products, but selling themselves for people to market for them.

Am I saying you scared these people off? Yes. Absolutely you are.

The reason you're scaring them off is because any qualified telemarketer, is unlikely to attend a conference to see if they like you or not. They want a job, not jump through hoops to see if they would LIKE to work for you, and then wait longer to see if you would LIKE to hire them.

If you want some good people, call 1 on 1, dig through the resumes.

Follow up with ALL OF THEM... ask if they attended the conference last night, and if not you wanted to go over a few things real quick, do it that way and you'll have much more success.

If you do it this way you won't have to start from scratch. They don't know that no one showed up, just call them up and do a phone interview and go from there.

iamnameless is correct, just go with having people send you their resumes.

Think about it, you are hiring telemarketers. They are probably not the most web savvy people. If you just had an ad asking for resumes you probably would have tons of emails right now. You should relist and ask for resumes

      I agree with futuremills above.

For what it's worth my thoughts on the ads were they were a bit long. Anyone else think that??

To me an ad really is just to get people to contact you. Sure put in a hoop or two so that you weed out the tyre kickers but you need a big enough sample of responses so that you can sift through them and have a few for backup if your original selections bomb out.

      Just my thoughts

Take good care of those that you love.

Following up with them is a great idea. And definitely avoid conference calls in the future. Very MLM.

I would be interested to know how successful you are with hiring. I've hired plenty of telemarketers and not one worked longer than a single day. I found it hard to keep people going when they work from home and have no accountability.

Is this the Bermuda Triangle and some of the letters went missing?

That aside if you are going to employ a handful of self employed Telesales people you don't really need their CV.

After all it is a telephone job and you want people who are comfortable on the phone.

You just ask them to phone you between certain hours.
Say 13:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 19:00 Mon to Wed week commencing xyz

That way you will get people who can

      a. Follow simple instructions
      b. Pick up a phone
      c. Sell themselves to you over the phone.

Give them 10 mins including time to get over the objection that you are not sure they would be a good fit for you.

It's not like you are going to be swamped with people, you said you only got 2 CVs anyway.

It also means that you don't need to be sitting at your desk all hours incase someone rings.

WebDiva7, I use CL to get telemarketers and have no issue with it.

    What I do:
    1. Create a new flyer ad with all the details make it look professional, ask for a resume on the flyer.
    2. When a interested person emails you with their resume give them the full details about what you can offer them, commission, leads etc.
    3. End the email back saying "email me back if you're still interested."

That's how I build my list and just call them, feel them out and see if you click and go from there.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it.

    Listen--

The good telemarketers and salespeople are rarely out of work. Why would they be? Odds are they're making more money than you can pay them, right now. You have to go where they are.

The rest are chicken and losers who won't last a day.

It's going to take weeks for you to get some good candidates. In the meantime you could take the calling issue on yourself. Nobody is ever going to care as much as you do.

Couldn't agree with you more strongly Jason about this. All the time spent trying to find someone to do what they're afraid or incapable of doing.

I've done my level best to not go down this road again. Creating yet another thread about phone sales and cold calling is simply pointless. How many times do you have to hit yourself in the head before you realize it feels so good when you stop.

Just as everyone has pointed out, you want to avoid conference calls. It’s better for you to do one on ones anyway as you can evaluate their phone skills, since telemarketing will require them to make one on one calls. Just take down some resumes, give them a time-frame to call you if they need you, and give them each a call individually when you get some free time.

ilovemedia: thanks for supporting the good advice. individually has worked out best because I can tell a lot about them by the way they hold a casual conversation.

kaniganj: you were right. it has been weeks and I still have not found that special someone. In the meantime, I've taking to hitting the streets myself. It's allowed me to refine my scripts and to learn about what to say to rebuttals.
