Almost lost a potential client because of this weird model...

So, I've been dealing with a potential client on doing Google Places and SMS marketing, it's a local restaurant.

I got a message from them saying they were going to go with somebody else.

I replied by asking who the company was.

He called me a few days later to tell me about the deal.

The deal was to rank his in Google Places 1 time for $1000 upfront. The "consultant" justified this by saying the business keeps its rankings for quite a long time, so it looks more attractive then our offers around here of pay every month.

Then, I found out, this "consultant" used the selling point that he has gotten other companies to the top of Google for the EXACT same term.

So, what he is doing is taking peoples $1000, ranking the business, then moving on and ranking another business for the exact same term, telling them they will hold their rankings so no reason to pay monthly, and then going and competing against them almost immediately.

He also showed my potential client the insanely over-inflated search numbers of "broad" match in the keyword tool, which I think is crap when people use that, especially for Google Places since the places listings only show up for a select few type of searches.

Is anybody using this model?

On the face of it it's a pretty good way to get people to trust you since you're showing them the ranking results of their last client, but why not turn it into a monthly thing and leverage those results by going after different cities.

That doesn't seem to ethical. Honestly, I'd rather have a smaller monthly incoming revenue from clients. But i guess the 1k was an easy sell for the clients.

Not ethical at all in my eyes since one of the selling points is the site will keep its rankings and then going after the exact same term almost immediately after.

Then to show search volumes that don't even pertain to where the Google Places listing will show up.

With people like this floating around it's not wonder why some business owners think we're just scammers...

When he says 'exact' term, are you sure he is not targeting different cities? For example, you could target "Italian restaurants that deliver" for Kansas city, MO (and) for Houston, TX, and each customer would receive local, geo-targeted results based on their IP address.

Also, if the key term that he is targeting is a long-tail keyword, there may not be any competition in most cases - thus, the places listing may stick, 'indefinitely'.

However, all of that said, I do agree that using broad search results is shady. I also think that, although residuals are almost always good for us, they aren't always good for the client. Not only can it be tougher (in some cases) to get a client to commit to an ongoing plan, but for something that we KNOW is not competitive and will require no additional work to sustain rankings, it's almost unethical to charge them as much as some do each month. Charging a small, customer support/retainer fee may be more acceptable in some cases.

I see what you're saying. But, he showed how he ranked a specific restaurant and then offered to rank this restaurant for the exact same term showing them that there is over 10,000 searches per month for that term.

I can see your point about charging them monthly, but it's really dependent on what their ROI is, if they're seeing little results from your campaign while being ranked number 1 maybe SEO isn't important to them, or to maybe set up charge them half of what it costs you to pay for the services every month and only run it once every couple months.

Lol. He won't build a business that way, he has to constantly find new people to get 1K from...

Whereas I would rather have 4 clients paying me 250 every month, month in and month out.

When people say they found someone cheaper, etc, I let them know when they do not get results, I will more than likely be working for their competitor and I work on exclusivity, but they still can try to give me a call, the proposed price will also be higher if they call me back.

I second all 3 of these paragraphs.

Did you think to let the client know that perhaps he should call the business he claims to have last ranked to ask what kind of promises he made to them. I would have also pointed out to him that he will be doing the same thing to you after he gets your money.

That sounds pretty crazy to me. I have never heard of that model or method before, sounds like this guy just takes the money and runs.

It's a model I used to use until I learned I can charge 1,000 not just once... but monthly.

I get it though... it isn't unethical either in my opinion. If someone doesn't pay me for exclusivity then damn right I'm going to do what makes my wallet fatter.

I'd rather have a one time fee than a monthly deal with someone I don't particularly care for. I can charge a large set up fee, and still keep them paying for more and more every 4 or 5 months too if they lose rank. Less hassle, less time, same amount of money, if not more.

I don't think that smart business owners will fall for that...
I mean if he just finished placing one of your competitors to #1 and he backstabs him by offering you the same deal... why couldn't he do the same to you next time?

The model itself isn't unethical, but the fact he actually tells them that the rankings will stick, and then goes after that exact keyword.

Unless he's selling front page listings and plans on getting all 7 of his clients on the front page and then calling it quits for this town and moving on.

I know where he's sourcing the work too, so I know all of his costs, makes me wonder what type of profits he's reaping, how much work it actually takes to get them on the front page.

The prospect called me to inform me he was going with another provider this morning so I enquired about it and found out what the guy was telling him, so I told him everything you guys mentioned and he changed his mind within the first couple minutes and decided to dump him instead.

Stay in touch with this guy. In a few months, ask him how his rankings are doing. Maybe it'll be time to change.
