Get a handle on it....

The spammers are just creating more spam then I care to take the time to bother reporting when I come here. Making people wait 60 seconds doesn't help the situation either.

My time is valuable and I don't want to (nor should I have to) sit for 5 minutes reporting this stuff before I can see if there's anything new worth reading or adding value to.

I'm pretty sure others who've been around here for awhile, and are known for adding value to this section of the forums most likely feel the same way.

Long time member or not, is the how you feel as well?

If so, vote by handing out a thanks and a vote for the thread PLEASE!

P.S. I love this place but not for much longer if all I end up doing is moderating the forum which is something the new owners team should be doing. The passive approach of letting the users be moderators model isn't working any longer!

Hate the 60 second wait time. Hate seeing garbage on here. Like to help by reporting it, but it could be made easier and if we're the ones moderating it, then let us get rid of it immediately if we prove ourselves to be responsible in keeping the forum clean. Seems last night was a bad one for spammers and that lately it has gotten worse. Bumping old threads and starting new nonsensical ones or just blatant advertising. Obvious spammers are obvious, just get them gone and move on as quickly as possible.

Yup, I report at least a couple spam posts a day. The most common offenders are the ones that take part of a sentence for the headline ("miles before stopping in") and then have links to watching Real Madrid inside.

And I second the point that the delay between being able to report spam posts is too long.

But anyway, few good questions are being asked in here anymore. I spend 10 minutes a day tops on the forum now.

On the other hand... we know the space better than anyone else, so I would be reluctant to hand over the keys to a 3rd party that is new and really doesn't have any skin in the game. Know what I mean?

I report dozens every day. Rants like this serve no useful purpose. The new owners didn't invent the spam and they haven't been owners for that long. I'm fairly certain that they are working on it, but in the meantime, anyone who doesn't want to spend the time to report it doesn't really need to.

My post isn't a rant by any stretch of the imagination. Why is it that any pointed and accurate critique is cast as a rant or in a negative lite.

Is it because some people don't drink the, "everything posted on the internet has to be cheer cheer cheer" cool aid?

I completely get that you spend the time to report dozens of post's every day and that's good. I guess we all have our thresholds on the time we're willing to commit to moderating the forums, I just hope a more solution is being addressed that doesn't require user moderation so much.

Sounds like a rant to me. Whether or not you spend time moderating is completely up to you. You don't need to spend any. It isn't required at all. Don't you think they're aware of the spam? He's mentioned it more than once in the "we're going to redesign the WF whether you vote for it or not" thread.

I say save your impatience and anger for more substantial and undesired changes coming, because you can bet they're coming. They're going to take care of the day to day operations, such as spam control and time outs when they get to it.

This comment reminds me of its related cousin... When person A brings to light an opposing viewpoint of a subject person B started, person B is miffed and auto responds by saying, "why are you getting so defensive?"

It seems they do not have enough moderators to cover these sub-sections of the W.F. The e-commerce section is being blasted with spam and it seems to stick. I reported one last night and it is still standing.

The current moderators are to busy trying to stop the flood of spam in the Main Section. It may pay to just take a short break if that's the case. I would hate to see you leave here Russ you and others have contributed great value to the place. If you do leave a trail so we others can find you.

I will give the new owners a fair chance to fix the spam problems. Maybe Allen left and took the spam protection with him.. I'm curious to see how the new guest poster's work out starting May 7,

Maybe the quickest fix is to stop all new memberships temporarily till the get the bugs fixed.

There are very easy fixes to this. Stopping new memberships is not one of them. I used to own a few boards, all vbulletin, and there are a lot of measure you can take. I've sent some suggestions in that would literally take 5-10 minutes but they're going to "look into it".

You may be right that Allen took one of his mods (extensions for spam in vbulletin) with him, since some are premium and you buy a yearly license.

Something definitely needs to change here, I used to check the forum all the time for good discussion and topics but lately, like Jason mentioned, it's like 10 minutes a day tops.

I have tried posting a response 5 times now, and it has timed out, or given a 500 error. Just as frustrating, if not more frustrating.

    I've given suggestions via PM.

There REALLY is an easy way to stop the spam... there's 3 practical ways, all that take 15-30 minutes... one way takes 5 minutes but they're "going to look into it".

There's a huge piece of the pie available, completely up for grabs. I wonder who's going to start a spin off forum and get it. I've considered it, so I know there are plenty of others too.

It's not just the time outs and spam. It's what else is on their agenda. I'm sure a lot of us are taking a wait and see attitude and a spin off is always an option.

Yeah I haven't spent much time here either lately. Too bad because I really enjoyed learning from all the other pros here. Last year we had some really, really great threads going!

what would be good and save everyones time is if once a post/thread has been reported, that shows up somehow so the next people who would have also spent time reporting it are aware it's already been done.

Of course that could be open to abuse but what is one persons annoyance can be anothers gold mine, but then there are those threads that are just annoying to everyone bar an idiot.

Good idea. I wonder how much time Russ and I, for example, are spending reporting the same posts. I don't see why they can't just give power to make a post or thread disappear to a select few that have proven themselves to be good at keeping the forum clean. They could always review and reinstate any threads or posts that they deemed worthy and review that with the person that deleted it. Unless, of course, there are some sort of software limitations that would prevent it. I don't know what the back end looks like on a forum such as this.

The "request timeout" issues are annoying too, and that's been a problem for a long time.

Well, the forum is set up so that if a certain number (unknown number) report a post, it automatically disappears.
