leadpages.net is not bad, but those programmers do not really know much about frontend performance... loading js in head, css not combined into one file, js not combined, png instead of jpg, ... etc

A modal window is easy to do, since you are using WP jQuery is already included... some CSS, some HTML and maybe a jQuery cookie plugin... done
