Check out AceSEF for managing SEF URLs and metadata. Have been using Joomla since 2008, its a solid CMS and there are a lot of components available.

What are you trying to achieve? I assume you are using Virtuemart, Ace ties in well with it.

If you are not familiar with the MVC programming model, it's not the simplest platform to build custom components on, but is very powerful. In most cases you can normally find a component that will suit your requirements.

Im basically trying to see if i can continue to use it for IM purposes, funnels etc, and if someone is doing it, what components the recommend.

Joomla is the best free open source platform for web development and you can make nice eCommerce websites. And if you know more about Joomla, go for online tutorials.

I've not used Joomla but I'm familiar with Drupal. Both are good CMS frameworks and can be used for eCommerce.

Ubercart, the Free Open Source E-Commerce Shopping Cart Solution / Software for Drupal, E Commerce a Drupal enabled eCommerce product.
Shopping Cart - Joomla! Extensions Directory to search for many options; I can't refer you to any of them as the one to use.

I also like joomla best, there are many extensions to make anything happens. I will share some of my setup:
    1. Jomsocial: create community like facebook, this can be combined into many things from sharing videos, follow/unfollow, chat, many more.
    2. Payplans: Create membership site, integrates with many extensions
    3. Hwdvideoshare: Create youtube clone
    4. PhocaGallery + SimpleCaddy: Sells image
    5. Sh404sef: Build SEF url

You can practically use Joomla for anything, there are many extensions for it.
    Hope this helps.

Joomla is much easier then of any other open source i my opinion. I already have tried my hand in WordPress too but i found it lil bit harder then of Joomla. I have downloaded an Joomla training from torrent and start learning it. And within three day's i feeling myself comfortable with Joomla, I have Created a simple template and have converted it to joomla with the help of video training and have got a good grip on it's all modules and components. But all i done with joomla so far is for testing and learning purpose only. But i found it much easier to learn then of WordPress. You can find same tutorial by using "Joomla Template Design" keyword on torrent it's just 428 mb in size as there are lot's of other tutorials that's why i am adding so much details here. Hope it will work for you.
