Paypal Membership Setup

OK... I am getting ready to set up some membership sites with Paypal and have some questions.

First I understand how to use IPN to verify memberships and then update my membership database based on the post. What I don't get is when a member cancels the subscription how is that handled? does PayPal send an email to me then I have to manually cancel the membership or, does paypal make another post to the IPN script then I can handle it automatically?

can someone please describe the process?

Dan

Really, this is all PayPal does? Well, that is really inconvenient ...

I actually built wordpress membership plugin based on IPN initially and later added another payment processors as well.

If you use Paypal IPN - when someone just paid for membership - IPN send 2 notifications:
    'subscr_signup' and 'subscr_payment'.

When he cancels - Paypal sends IPN notification 'subscr_cancel'.
When membership term ends - Paypal send IPN notification 'subscr_eot'.
When you sell just single item (not recurring) Paypal sends IPN notification 'web_accept'.
Of course more data (payee name, email, price, etc...) sent together with that.

So you may intercept all this notifications and do your processing.

    Hope this helps.

There are a bunch of Wordpress Membership plugins that you could use, and that would be my suggestion. Just setup a wordpress installation and use one of those plugins and you'd be up and running in no time.

PM me if you want me to suggest any as I'm not sure what the protocol around here for that is.

You can use PayPal with aMember to manage memberships and content protection both and you wouldn't have to write any additional code for the IPN, aMember has already done that.

Paypal actually has some excellent documentation and code samples on their developers site. I suggest you review these and by all means setup a "sandbox" account. This account will allow you to test your complete subscription process (including cancellations) without involving real money.

your best bet is to go with a custom php membership site, and if you want paypal payments - use a timer within your login script - then present a paypal buy/now button on expiration. after payment is made, have the "convermation" link go back to your php script to continue there memebership.

If you're using Wordpress, you can look at the WishList Member plugin. Watch their video. It walks you through the process. It also integrates with PayPal. I use it without issues.
