Paying to remove links....

Would you pay to remove links if someone was charging per link?

A webmaster wants to charge 10 bucks per link - offering 5 links for 40 bucks, all which he found linking to my site from them. Do you think every link deleted raises the chance of getting out Google's penguin?

-Thanks

It depends how bad the links are.

It kind of sounds like he created the links and then is trying to charge you to remove them. If that is the case, screw that.

It was likely done with an seo company for my website years ago. I found the directory ownerscontact info through whois, but yeah, he is definetely trying to make however much money he can to remove the links.

Weird that there are 5 links to one site in a single directory, or does he own multiple directories that each have a link?

If the directories are decent, I would let them go. Most directory links are nowhere near as bad as people think. On the other hand, if it is one of those directories touting PR and links for SEO, I would try to negotiate him down to like $20 and get rid of them.

Getting rid of the links is always going to be better than using the Disavow Tool.

Sounds like a new business model for people still owning trashy directories... Pay to remove the links (that you may have actually paid for in 2007.)

Look forward to a WSO on this idea soon

PBN links available: Many niches & each domain only has 10 OBL.
PM to Guest post on Buzzfeed style 5 year old site. DA 38 / PR 4 / 300+ linking domains.

If it was a site that put the links there without your permission, it is shitty.

However, if you requested/placed/bought the links, I see nothing wrong with them charging for their time to remove them.

If you think they don't comply with Google Quality Guidelines, just disavow them on Google Webmaster Tools.

I wouldn't pay that much to remove a link. Rather than paying, just disavow them and build better links since the links aren't much.

It's an article directory so they are definitely pretty weak and anchor text heavy.

Oh, article directory. I thought you meant a real directory. Yeah, article directories are nothing but trash.

Ya, I decided to go through with it. Some of the people at Google will say - don't pay to remove links but they're not the ones getting effected by Penguin algorithm.

Turns out they want $70 to remove the links. I sent them a message saying I will disavow with Google if they don't remove it which I did already anyway lol and also that I never spend more than 10 dollars to have a link removed.

Hold on! First of all you need to make sure you have a reason to remove the links... If your web traffic has dropped dramatically and the dates are around the same time as the Google updates then 100% you've been hit by a penalty...

If there is a small drop - then chances are that sites which used to provide link juice through good quality backlinks to your site have been hit... and no longer do... In which case you can do nothing other than to roll up your sleeves and carry on with creating new fresh content and gain some high quality authority links...

Now if the case is everything is fine and you have some spammy links... Don't worry!!! The last resort is to disavow - but then you need to be 100% sure you've been hit by a penalty and are unable to remove the links... Either way I would not pay someone else!!!

Personally I would ignore it and carry on as business as usual... As it takes hundreds to thousands of spammy links to hurt your site and not a few coming from one domain.. Seriously don't lose any sleep over this ;-)

The site has tanked in Google since months ago - around six months a year even. We've disavowed over 500 domains. Someone on Google forums founds 500+ more domains and I've also hired a service at linkdelete.com so it is possible for this penguin refresh too many links were missed so could be another one is needed for the site now.

In perspective though five articles from this site now that they're disavowed might not be a big deal considering the work that's now been done to clean the site.

Sounds like they keep upping the price on you, just trying to milk more money. Removing them would obviously be the better choice but if you already disavowed then it's a moot point.

Sounds like a great money making scheme to me.

    Create/buy a crappy directory site.

Mass link to all the competitors of your money sites.

Get them to pay you to delete the links.
