404 Errors and broken/pages links clearly cause you rankings to suffer... at least based on what I have seen!

Broken links stop search engine crawlers in their tracks - Crawlers are busy little guys (they've only got an entire Internet to scan over and over again), so when they run into a broken link, they stop crawling that page and move on to the next one, meaning any pages it hasn't crawled won't be indexed or receive a ranking.

Broken links lead to lower website traffic - If a user encounters a broken link, they will likely be discouraged from continuing to any other pages. By spending less time on your site, search engine algorithms will assume it's because your site isn't providing visitors with quality content or information, resulting in a lower ranking.

Turns out the WordPress expert is just a newbie. Broken links don't affect SEO, even Google confirmed this.

The only way a 404 error would ever hurt you, is if you
deleted a money page. Since real people seldom delete
their bad pages, let alone their good ones, why would
404 errors ever be a problem? People have typos all the
times. Check your spelling. Give other people a copy and paste
way of linking. Think.

404 errors are as common as dirt.

How on earth could they cause your rankings to suffer?
That makes absolutely no sense.

If you are in the habit of deleting pages, stop.

If you are in the habit of doing things on a whim with no
guidance or knowledge, stop.

Everyone gets 404 errors due to the nature of humans and the internet.

If you don't have a custom 404 error page, get one ASAP. You are leaving
what could be a considerable amount of cash on the table.

I have 1000 good links. Some clown makes a bad one. How does that cause
my traffic to drop?

Indirectly it can have inverse effect on visitors experience. If your visitors usually land on the 404 (broken) pages this may increase your bounce rate and based on the behavior SEs may start lowering your rankings in SERPs.

Excessive broken or dead links on a website may be suspected of being a poor quality website. And this will not escape the scrutinizing search engine spiders, thereby indexing and ranking are both affected.

Yes, broken links affect SEO. Because when users will visits the broken link of your website then, they will immediately exit from your website which can increase the bounce rate of your website. Moreover, they will not visit your website again and thus, your website traffic can decrease. So, try to resolve this issue.

404 errors are common and cannot, let me repeat that....CANNOT
be avoided.

If you no longer have a page, eventually the page will drop out of
google. But that's another story.

Broken links can also be just typos from a 3rd party.

So what?

Has nothing to do with SEO or anything else.....if one does not
have their head up their rear.

Example: Joe Blow makes money from domain.com/money

He deletes that page. Links built with it go nowhere..and...gasp,
he makes no money. Conclusion: Joe Blow is an idiot.

SEO cannot fix or avoid stupid.

Yes, broken links can affect website ranking. Reasons, any website with broken links is not considered user-friendly. If users will find any dead link on your website, they will move to the next website. This will affect your website traffic and conversion rate.

If I link to a page on your site, say domain.com/hi-there. But I type domain.com/hy-there I've created a broken link.

Tell me, fine folks, how that has an effect on your site's ranking?

It seems to me that you all think you can get a broken link only when you, the site owner, create a bad link from one page on your site to another.

Surely, you have created links to your site from other sites!

Even if you do create an internal broken link, the effect on SEO will be negligible, not worth talking about... unless that's all the SEO you've done, you're going to do.

..yeah. And anyone typing in the wrong thing, it registers a 404 error.

Why most of the people here are convinced that broken links can affect your ranking? Hmm it's not. Yes, it affects your user experience 'cause they find nothing on the page, but you can customize your 404 to make your user stay and clicks to other pages of your site.

If what Google says at Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Do 404s hurt my site? is true, then in theory, you should be able to rank a website very highly with a butt-load of pages that don't exist.

Since we all know that would never happen, the logical conclusion is that YES, 404 pages affect ranking (SEO). And that's whether Google wants to admit it or not.

Add 404 Page in your website to tell to user the doesn't exists and still not alive. Alternatively you may use 404 page to redirect technique for move another new page.
